Hello! My name is Dsol. I am from Portland and I am a Beginner Filipino language student.
I am studying the Filipino language because I eventually intend to move to Philippines as an expat.

@Dsol Welcome! There are many others here with a similar plan. How close are you to moving?

@Dsol OK, so, getting close! That will be exciting. Will you be living in Manila as an expat, or some place else?

I've never really liked the term expat. It always has to me the undertones of a lack of integration and a sense of otherness.

@akosikoneho True especially given the attitudes and behavior of most expats haha. I know many who think I'm completely wasting my time. They would never imagine wasting their life learning this language.

I really can't fathom the people who live here and don't speak the language. Just the other day I met a wealthy man from Maguidanao with almost 0 English. Turns out he's got ties to the old sultanates down there. He fed me grilled tuna steak and we had a good lunch, all on him. Just steams my broccoli the hubris of people who IMMIGRATE (lets get it right people, when you live here for ever you can't keep calling yourself an expat) and don't learn the national language (or at least the main regional language of your area). Imagine doing that in America, England, or France. You'd be run out of town.

@akosikoneho

Yeah, I agree...but "immigrant" has an even worse connotation (at least in the US). It seems that if you're rich you're an "expat" and if you're poor you're an "immigrant." ; )

What's a better term? Foreign resident?

@akosikoneho I don't know when you live here long enough, it starts getting really annoying being called a foreigner all the time. I don't have a better word for it. In fact I will make a new post about this.

I do not see myself in Manila. Likely on the outskirts of a town. Slightly Provence but still able to be in the city with ease. As far as expat, have no problem with the term. We shall see how fluent I become, but I think it is helpful to be able to at least stumble through the language and still be able to communicate when we encounter someone whose English is not serviceable.
