Is she actually a native speaker of Tagalog/Filipino tho? You would be surprised to know it's actually the a 2nd (and not all the respected) language for a huge portion of the country. I'd want to learn her actual native language.

Amboy is correct. Only 25% of Filipinos are native Tagalog speakers. The 75% speak other languages as their mother tongue.

Also, no offense, but I don't think there would be any advantage for you learning Tagalog if she is moving to Wales.

I'm not saying you shouldn't learn it, but you might want to rethink the reason. Learning Tagalog is most beneficial if you want to understand untranslatable aspects of the culture (which often times requires being immersed and surrounded by Tagalog speakers for a long time - aka living in the Philippines or really being into the pop media culture ), but learning for the sake of your partner being Filipino won't really advantage you.

Oy! I have to disagree there. The process of learning and studying the language will help you get a deeper insight into the Filipino people and culture, and IMO that will also help you related to and with your wife. ...Speaking as someone celebrating my 5th wedding anniversary this weekend with a Filipina!

Also, it’s satisfying to learn something new, and fun to use when you visit the Philippines.

I wouldn’t discourage people from learning the language so quickly, we all have our own reasons!
