Hello. I would like to learn Tagalog. Could anyone explain or direct me to an explanation of how to use this site? Salamat!

Hello Michael McGrady!

Glad to see you want to learn Tagalog yourself, and stumbled onto this website.

This website is rather a collection of tools one can use to learn Tagalog. So let me instead give a rundown over some of the more important features features on this site. This website has more to offer than the things I'll point out, but I just want to point out some of the features I think could potentially be useful to you:

If you're a beginner and don't know where to start, you can use the menu to find Tagalog.com's beginner-friendly lessons under the "Lessons" tab (link: www.tagalog.com/less ons/). There, you can find a few resources that will help you start to learn the language.

If you want to know what a Tagalog word means or want to know how to say a particular word in Tagalog, using Tagalog.com's dictionary via the "Dictionary" menu tab will help you out (link: www.tagalog.com/dict ionary/). It is a friendly Tagalog to English dictionary that has recordings for the most common words and pronunciation markers so you know how the word is pronounced. Simply type in a word (English or Tagalog), and you should find your answer.

When you get past the basics, if you want to listen or read some Tagalog content, you can use our "Reader" tool found in the menu tabs (link: www.tagalog.com/read er-assist/), or the Listening Practice Videos (Tools -> Listening Practice Videos) (link: www.tagalog.com/list ening-practice/). There's almost 100 hours of video content for the listening practice videos, and what I estimate to be around 50,000-100,000 words of content already in the Reader tool you can use (although most of it is quite advanced). Additionally, you can import your own content into these tools if you so wish.

If you need more resources, you can go to the Tagalog Resources Master List via the menu tabs (Tools -> Tagalog Resources Master List), and you will find more resources there that could be of use (link: www.tagalog.com/reso urces/).

And lastly, there's the forums which you've just used yourself. Come here if you've got any questions regarding Tagalog, or just want to talk about anything Tagalog related! We don't always respond instantly as the Tagalog learning community is a small one, but we are friendly and there are a number of people that scour the site in their own time and might be able to contribute to the discussion.

Have fun learning!

P.S. @jkos , is there a guide for beginners unfamiliar to this site? If there isn't one, it'd be great if there was one that was pinned to the top of the forums, or in a place beginners would find accessible.

Also, thanks for fixing up the issue with the study tool in the reader for me!

@Scrover
Nice write-up!
I agree, an intro would be really helpful for new members...

@Scrover
Hope you don't mind, I adapted some of your message here and created an Intro link on the main site home page for everyone:

@Scrover Perhaps a video on how to make use of the reader tool? I think 90% of this site might not get it, or the power of it at all.

@AMBoy

I'd love to see a how-to video for actually a lot of the features on the site, and the reader tool is just one of them.

Is this a suggestion you think could be implemented @jkos ?

@Scrover
Yes! It’s on my wishlist...that list is pretty long, though.

Right now I’m trying to get the “Studying” flash card system code improved (to integrate the spaced repetition better) and working on an improved Top X,000 flash cards lists using a better process and better data...one using a spoken word corpus (which would the the recommended starting point) and another using the entire corpus (which includes a lot of more formal newspaper articles and also fiction/novels).

It’s a slow process, though!

Is there anything I or we could do to help speed things up a bit? I wouldn't mind putting some labour into this website if it helps you out (but I'm just a bit too poor to be a patron right now lol - thanks university).

P.S. I feel like we've hijacked the original poster's forum post lol.
