Question: are there any figurative/idiomatic meanings of "bituka"?
Can "bituka" in the first 2 paragraphs of www.rappler.com/voic es/editorials/death- march-we-face-now/ mean something like "thoughts", "mind", "awareness" or "preoccupations"? The "intestines/bowels/gut" meaning given in tagalog.com/dictiona ry/#bituka doesn't make sense to me in context.

"Bituka" is "intestines".

That editorial refers to the idiomatic expression "malayo sa bituka (far from the intestines)". It is often used to teasingly assure someone that their health issue is nothing serious. It's like saying "It won't kill you". In a general sense, it may be interpreted as "It's not important". From there, "bituka" is "that which really matters".

The editorial is talking about things that Filipinos should really be concerned about now that Marcos is the president.
