yea they say i speak slang

@slowgo

hmm ... that might be the problem ...

im working on phrases

Dont work on phrases ... you have a lot of sites, that promise you to make you fluent in 30 minutes ... which of course is NOT true ... it's just a waste of time !

Work on your English grammar instead (which is far from being "perfect" as it seems to me) ... and work on your English prononciation ... and I am sure people in the phils will understand you right away ...

Hmm I went to the Philippines for 14 days back in 2019 (this is before I learned Tagalog or had any interest to do so). I must say that when I saw that English was an official language of the country I thought I would be fine speaking only English (my native language) WRONG. I stayed in Quezon City and no one understood me 💀. I speak normal standardized American English (I only use slang with people I’m comfortable with) I also know multiple dialects of American English. In my experience Filipinos greatly overestimate their abilities in the English language.

Hmmm .... I am following this discussion for quite a while now ... and I think, it is time for an open word.

Maybe you speak slang, but I think, this is NOT your problem. Your main problem is, that you lack proper GRAMMAR !

"why does filipinos know english ,but not understand a word i say!

How about: "Why DO Filipino's know English, but DO NOT understand a word I say!" ...

"... and took him over 2 yrs to learn what he does know as of this day he say he not know all of it"

How about: "... and IT took him over 2 yrs TO LEARN WHAT HE KNOWS as of this day, he SAYS he DOES NOT know all of it"

If you commit severe grammatical errors in every second phrase, then how in the world do you expect Filipino people to understand you ?

Only YOU can work on that problem. And once you manage to master English grammmar at least to some extent, then people WILL understand you. This is the best advice I can give you.

Kind regards
Jimmy

@PinoyTaj

Let's not worry about "midwestern acccent" ... there are some accents in the US that are hard to understand and this is all that I wanted to point out !

hmmm ... I have definitely no intention to compete with a "Mr. slowgo" .... Normally I would pay no attention to such a posting. But THIS makes a difference:

they just DO NOT realize what i want, i want some BREAD they think imasking for FRED lol// i think all this is funny

They ? Filipino people ? Funny ? They are STUPID just because they dont understand your broken English ?

I dont think these people are STUPID nor FUNNY ! All the people in the phils I have met were friendly, helpful, sweet and clever ! Yes! CLEVER ! They sometimes lack education ... but this is not their fault ... I met school children who had to walk 2 hours to and fro Tacloban every day, just because their parents did not have the lousy 7 php for the yeepney ... And they had to quit school after 4th grade, because their help was absolutely required to make a living for their large family ! This is life in the phils ! My girl friend an me sometimes picked up people on their way back home to their village .... they were exhaustet, thirsty, hungry ... but they were still patient and sweet ! Does any american have to go through such hardship ... ? And yet some americans who do not speak correct English grammar complain, that they are not readily understood !

Filippino people are wonderful... and I dont tolerate that anybody, who does not even have a minimum understanding of his own English grammar blames these people for not understanding him! Period !

How about you, Mr. slowgo ... they dont understand you at the bakery shop, when you want BREAD. Maybe you just learn "Mayroon tinapay po ka ba ? ... and if you speak slowly and concentrate on your prononciation, people WILL understand you. You get your bread ... and "FRED" is not a topic any more !

Wouldn't that be nice ... ?

This is how I see the world ...

Kind regards
Jimmy

mhh ... you give up explaining (what do you explain after all) and I give up to try to correct your English grammar.

now you jimmy how would you get wings out of a simple Leg

@slowgo

No way ... leg is leg and wing is wing ... I would prepare a spicy chicken curry with coconut milk out of it ... and then who cares about legs or wings ... it's both tasty.

Let me try to summarize our (partially) unpleasant conversation: according to your English I would suppose your are no native American ...and it seems to me, you have a problem to learn foreign languages. This may be one reason, why you dont feel at home in the Phils. What a pity ... because it is such a pleasant country with so many wonderful people in it.

But be it as it is ... maybe really the best thing for you to do, is to go back to where you came from ... maybe you get along better with your own people ... only YOU can tell ...

Do you know what ... some people can be happy anywhere in this world ... and some can not be happy no matter where they are ... We always carry along ourselves ... mhh ... after all you may have missed to be happy in the phils ....

I really wish you all the best whereever you go ... ingat palagi ... nice talking to you ... -

King regards
Jimmy
