Question: A friend wrote me this, he told me what it means but I don't know how to break it down, I'm having trouble understanding why he used the word 'kana', please help:

Was that a text message?

“Kana” should be “ka na” in standard form. The “na” there goes with “dito” – dito na – which is our way of saying “to have something done here instead of elsewhere”.

There are two Taglish expressions there: “mag-dinner (to have dinner)” and “mag-a-alarm (will set the alarm)”. I am not sure though if the writer really meant using an alarm unless it contextually makes sense to you.

Had that been written in proper Tagalog, that should have been:

Dito ka na mag-dinner. Mag-a-alarm ako ng 18:00. = Have your dinner here. I’ll set the alarm for 18:00.
