Because sometimes the i is pronounced e in some words.
I know lalaki can be pronounced lalake as bakit can be pronounced baket.

In the old writing system, e/i sounds are indicated by the same marker, ᜊᜒ(be/bi). This is the same as o/u ᜊᜓ(bo/bu).
It is also the same if you just have the vowel sound, ᜀ(a) ᜁ(e/i) ᜂ(o/u)
Some words now have a preferred vowels sounds to spell or say, but it is still correct to pronounce any way and please don't make fun of people for choosing to pronounce a certain way.

To my foreigner ear, frequent code switchers pick up a bit of the "sloppiness" of the variety in the English sounds...many truly talented blinguals...and some English sounds are bound to sneak into pronounciations.
