Nasa atin po kayong StreamYard, si Matthew Vincent Tabilo
00:04.0
00:09.0
ng CEED, Center for Energy, Ecology and Development
00:14.0
00:17.0
lahat tayo may pakialam dito
00:19.0
sa nangyayaring all-spill na ito
00:21.0
01:05.0
May nagbabanggit po, isang taon daw po clean-up
01:08.0
When you say clean-up, as in, clean-up alin?
01:12.0
Saan?
01:13.0
01:22.0
Magandang umaga, Matthew! Good morning!
01:25.0
Good morning!
01:27.0
01:35.0
Okay, sige. So, yung mga mangroves natin
01:38.0
01:49.0
So, kagaya ito sa Pilipinas
01:51.0
So, dito sa Pilipinas, we have 35-40 species na mangroves
01:55.0
So, yung pinaka-common ay rhizophora, sonorasha, abyssinia, broguera, at kanaypa
02:01.0
So, medyo yan yung mga technical names nila
02:03.0
02:12.0
So, of course, yung mga mangroves natin
02:14.0
02:18.0
kasi sila yung magiging buffer zones
02:23.0
So, if ever na may mga storm surges or typhoons
02:27.0
they will ultimately protect or safeguard our coastal communities
02:31.0
from the impacts of the climate crisis
02:33.0
So, number two, of course, yung sinabi kong climate change
02:36.0
They mitigate the impacts of climate change also by sequestering atmospheric carbon
02:41.0
So, kinukuha nila yung mga carbon na nasa atmosphere
02:45.0
at pumunta dito sa biomass nila at saka sa soils
02:49.0
And, of course, yung mangroves natin, ito yung source of livelihood
02:53.0
to our fisherfolk communities
02:55.0
Not only livelihood but also food
02:57.0
03:05.0
And, of course, yung mangroves, ito yung isang habitat sa mga variety na flora at fauna natin
03:11.0
03:33.0
Yes po
03:35.0
And then, sabi mo nga kapag may storm surge, parang lumalabas ito na wave breaker ito
03:43.0
Diba?
04:26.0
So yung oil spill nangyayari ito noong February 28, 2023
04:29.0
Yung MT Princess Empress or yung vessel mismo which carried 800,000 liters of industrial fuel
04:37.0
So nakab-size ito dahil sa straining caused by overheating
04:41.0
and of course kasi malakas yung currents at blast rates sa Nauhan, Oriental, Mindoro
04:46.0
So with the tanker submerged, andoon yung oil spill nangyayari na
04:51.0
So in terms of oil spill history in the Philippines, yung pinakauna is yung
04:56.0
Nimara Strait na oil spill, 2.1 million na industrial fuel
05:01.0
Yung pangalawa naman sa Estancia, Iloilo, 800,000 liters
05:04.0
And then yung ngayon dito sa Oriental, Mindoro na 800,000 liters din
05:09.0
So it could also impact yung Verde Island Passage
05:14.0
and then the neighboring provinces ng Antique and also Palawa
05:19.0
So in terms of the impacts of the oil spill sa mga mangroves natin
05:23.0
Unang-una, oil exposure can prevent the growth of or let's say development of mangrove leaves
05:29.0
resulting to defoliation
05:31.0
So when you say defoliation, ito yung loss of leaves or removal of leaves
05:35.0
So yung defoliation, this could lead to death of mangroves
05:39.0
and then it could change the conditions of the coastal environment
05:42.0
leading to increased temperature and also salinity
05:45.0
Kasi kung wala na yung canopy cover yung mangroves or yung leaves
05:49.0
Of course, tatama dito yung init from the sunlight
05:53.0
So of course, mas mainit yung temperature
05:55.0
and then of course, ma-increase yung salinity ng tubig
05:58.0
So it could change the conditions of the coastal environment
06:02.0
So I could also lead you to the
06:06.0
Yung isang study by Barnuevo and Sadava sa Nimara Strait noong 2006
06:12.0
Kasi mayroon silang study eh regarding the impacts of mangroves
06:15.0
noong oil spill doon sa Gimara
06:17.0
So as what I've said earlier, 2.1 million liters of bunker fuel spilled Gimara Strait
06:23.0
So yung nangyari doon, yung sa study nila
06:26.0
Yung mga mangrove propagules daw, they were found to exhibit abnormality
06:31.0
So may albinism, so abnormal yung propagules or yung seedlings sila mismo
06:36.0
So as what I've said earlier, yung defoliation or loss of mangrove leaves
06:40.0
It also happened in Gimara Strait kasi yung canopy cover ng mangroves nag-decrease
06:45.0
And then right after that, kasi nag-defoliate na sila
06:48.0
Of course, namamatay yung mga mangroves
06:50.0
And then, I would also like to note na yung mga mangroves, they have breathing roots kasi
06:57.0
So that's their lungs
06:58.0
So yung roots ng mangroves, mayroon yung maliit na pores to facilitate gas exchange
07:05.0
So ito yung lungs nila, yung sa mangroves
07:08.0
So if these roots are being smothered by oil, it could potentially suffocate them and leading to death
07:16.0
So what would happen if these mangroves die?
07:19.0
Of course, unang-una, yung mga coastal communities natin, they will be more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change
07:25.0
So yung sinabi ko kanina na mangroves as buffer zones
07:28.0
If mawawala na yung mangroves dito sa atin, like sa mga coastal areas
07:32.0
Of course, they will be vulnerable from it
07:35.0
07:39.0
And knowing that we're in a climate crisis, it would mean na mas intense yung typhoons natin annually
07:49.0
So, other signs of oiling also sa mga mangrove trees natin
07:55.0
Yung leaves nagiging color yellow
07:58.0
And then, yung coastal environment mismo ng mangroves
08:01.0
Of course, maraming wildlife doon
08:04.0
So it would not be a viable coastal habitat for them
08:08.0
So right now, since it's March already, it's nearing the end of winter season
08:14.0
So of course, migratory birds flock here in the Philippines during winter
08:19.0
So since March na yun, that's the time that they will stop their migration
08:24.0
So some of these migratory birds are found to be in the mangroves
08:29.0
Kasi ito yung ginagawang nilang wintering grounds
08:32.0
And then of course, available yung mga shellfishes, yung fish na kinakain ng mga migratory birds natin
08:39.0
Of course, for them to have a fuel for their next flight
08:43.0
So if ever yung mga mangroves natin are exposed to oil
08:46.0
Of course, yung mga migratory birds natin, they will be exposed to oil as well
08:50.0
So yung repellency ng feathers nila, if they're exposed to oil, they would be unable to fly
08:56.0
So they won't be able to go back na sa destination nila
09:01.0
And of course, hypothermia and leading to death as well
09:05.0
And then of course, to think that mangroves are homes to commercially important fishes
09:10.0
And crabs, shrimps
09:12.0
So it would also impact yung livelihood ng mga coastal communities natin
09:16.0
So parang interconnected talaga yung effects
09:20.0
09:24.0
And also to the people who depend on these coastal habitats
09:28.0
09:37.0
Whether yan ay diesel fuel or industrial oil yan
09:41.0
09:47.0
O sadyang wala na, patay na yan, mamamatay talaga yan?
09:54.0
Okay, so actually I read a bulletin from University of the Philippines Visayas
10:03.0
Bulletin number 3, you can check it on Facebook as well
10:06.0
So we have a post there regarding the removal of oil in coastal areas
10:10.0
And then may mga specific things that you can do regarding removal of oil sa mangroves
10:17.0
So yung unang-una dito is yung placing of absorbent booms of oils to recover, of course, yung oil
10:23.0
And then low pressure of vacuum to suck out the oil as well
10:30.0
And yung cleanups, yung nakalagay dito sa bulletin nila na cleanups for the mangrove areas
10:36.0
Cleanups should be conducted using boats to minimize food traffic
10:40.0
And not allowing sediments and soils to be mixed
10:44.0
Pero yung nangyari kasi, for example this one, yung sa oil natin sa mangroves
10:50.0
Medyo cautious tayo if ever mag-clean up tayo
10:54.0
Of course, there might be physical hazards na mangyayari
10:57.0
So I do think na if ever na mag-clean up, let's do yung proper protocols from the academe
11:06.0
Or let's see if help also from the Philippine Coast Guard regarding that one
11:09.0
Pero kasi nga, itong inyong grupo, Mangrove Matters PH
11:15.0
Na talagang yaan ang inyong pinag-aaralan
11:20.0
Kaya ba sa ating karanasan doon sa Guimaras?
11:24.0
11:28.0
Kasi ang sinasabi, four months cleanup, even a year or two
11:32.0
11:40.0
Alright, so I do think it depends siguro on how we conduct the protocols in doing the cleanup of the oil spill
11:50.0
And yung sa Guimaras Strait kasi, it took almost a decade, even more a decade or more
11:56.0
As to yung fully, yung pag-recover talaga ng mangroves doon sa Guimaras Strait
12:01.0
So I think it would depend if malakas talaga yung action
12:05.0
If kukuha talaga yung mga different methods on how we are able to contain the oil spill
12:13.0
Although I've seen news right now that there are other foreign countries that would help us in containing the said oil spill
12:22.0
12:27.0
And we appreciate sharing us your thoughts and wisdom dito nga kung gaano ka-importante ang mga bakawan sa ating kapaligiran
12:35.0
Salamat na marami Matthew
12:37.0
Thank you.
