Yes, happy Women's Month as well. Thank you for having me.
00:03.5
So first off, tell us about yourself.
00:05.5
First, your dominance in Jiu-Jitsu.
00:07.5
Were you always into contact sports?
00:10.0
How did you get into this sport?
00:13.5
To be honest, I wasn't really always into contact sports.
00:17.5
Although I have been into sports since high school,
00:21.0
but sports like football, track and field.
00:24.0
And then it was only after college that I got into mixed martial arts,
00:27.5
then into Jiu-Jitsu.
00:29.5
So in the past, I wasn't the way that I was.
00:33.0
Now, I was much girlier as a kid.
00:37.0
Any inspirations as to why you got into Jiu-Jitsu in particular?
00:42.0
It was really just a teammate in track and field
00:44.5
that told me about mixed martial arts.
00:47.5
And I love challenges.
00:49.0
And it sounded so challenging.
00:51.0
And I really wanted to stay fit after college.
00:53.5
So I tried MMA.
00:55.5
Because I didn't really have much opponents in MMA since I'm small.
00:59.0
And not many small women did MMA at that time.
01:03.0
I had to switch to Jiu-Jitsu because there were more women doing Jiu-Jitsu.
01:07.0
And there were more competitions as well.
01:10.0
Linda, tell us about your journey so far.
01:12.5
And all the accolades you've received,
01:14.5
medals brought home to our country.
01:18.0
Well, so far, it's been quite a journey.
01:20.5
I think I've been doing Jiu-Jitsu for 10 years already.
01:24.5
Yeah, 10 years already.
01:26.0
I cannot talk about all the medals.
01:31.0
I mean, it's not really going to be the main topic.
01:33.5
But I think some of the highlights of my career have been
01:38.0
the World Championships.
01:39.5
So I won the World Championships in both the JJIF and the IBJJF
01:44.5
a couple of times.
01:46.0
And then also the Southeast Asian Games two times.
01:51.0
And Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games,
01:53.5
as well as the Asian Beach Games.
01:56.0
In the Asian Games, I got bronze in 2018.
01:58.5
But hopefully this year,
02:00.0
hopefully it won't be bronze this year.
02:01.5
Yes, let's claim that.
02:05.0
So that's pretty much the highlights of my career.
02:08.5
You know what they say about the sport, right?
02:10.5
It's the art of folding clothes while people are wearing them.
02:16.0
And how does it feel being a woman in the sport of Jiu-Jitsu?
02:19.0
How does the sport empower you?
02:21.5
Well, being a woman in the sport of Jiu-Jitsu,
02:24.5
well, some think now,
02:26.0
oh, it's a male-dominated sport where it's hard.
02:28.0
But honestly, I think that it's even an advantage
02:32.0
being a woman in the sport of Jiu-Jitsu
02:34.0
because I have less strength than the guys that I train with.
02:38.5
So I'm forced to really use technique as much as possible.
02:42.0
And the more you use technique in the sport,
02:44.0
the more you will progress.
02:45.5
Because if you keep just using your strength,
02:47.5
then you won't really absorb the depth of the sport.
02:51.0
Because you're just going to keep using strength.
02:53.0
So as a woman, given that our bodies are different from men, right?
02:57.0
So I think it's really an advantage for women in this kind of a sport.
03:02.5
There's a lot of thinking involved as well, right?
03:05.0
Yes, exactly.
03:08.0
Aside from being a champion in Jiu-Jitsu,
03:10.5
you're also a child rights advocate.
03:13.0
Since when did you start pursuing this advocacy?
03:16.5
Yeah, well, this particular advocacy started in 2015
03:21.5
just by asking a question of what is all this for,
03:25.0
what this whole journey is for.
03:27.0
And then coming across an article about child sexual violence
03:31.0
and researching more about it that year.
03:33.0
And moving into 2016 where I met certain people
03:37.0
that helped direct this growing burden in me.
03:41.0
And I started by teaching a shelter,
03:46.0
the sport of Jiu-Jitsu,
03:48.0
together with my teammates in our club.
03:50.5
So we just shared the sport with survivors of child sexual violence.
03:55.5
Actually, not all of them were survivors,
03:57.5
but all of them were vulnerable children.
04:01.5
We saw how the program grew and how it really helped the children
04:06.5
deal with their issues, face their fears,
04:10.5
even face their court hearings,
04:15.5
which were really traumatic experiences.
04:20.0
That's pretty much how it began and how it progressed.
04:23.0
And it just became Fight to Protect in 2018
04:27.0
where it grew into a movement already.
04:30.0
And there became an awareness-raising aspect to it.
04:34.0
It's a very unique way of promoting the sport.
04:38.0
Are you seeing progress though in the fight against child abuses
04:42.0
at least here in the country?
04:43.0
Yeah, well, yes, definitely.
04:45.5
Since the time that I started getting into the advocacy,
04:50.5
there has been a lot of progress.
04:53.5
The End Child Rape Campaign cost,
04:57.5
well, I'm not sure if that was the sole cost,
05:00.5
but then the revision of the law on the anti-rape law,
05:06.5
it was already revised, right?
05:08.5
The requests of that campaign were approved.
05:13.0
Of course, it's not because of my effort.
05:15.0
It's because of their effort.
05:17.0
There are a lot of other advocates who are really working hard
05:21.0
with the legislators to ensure that children are protected in our laws.
05:25.0
And a lot of other laws also have been revised
05:31.0
to become more updated because there are a lot of things like
05:35.0
technology that have developed, even modes of abuse.
05:38.5
Right now, one of the most common forms of abuse is online, right?
05:44.5
And even the methods have changed.
05:47.5
So the laws had to be updated and had to cover more bases.
05:51.5
And that has happened as well in the past.
05:53.5
And I've seen a lot more features,
05:56.5
even celebrities talking about these issues.
05:59.5
So yes, definitely there has been progress.
06:02.5
More progress and more awareness, right?
06:04.5
And what's your advice on how we should encourage more women
06:08.5
to go out of their comfort zones, break stereotypes,
06:12.0
and do more for the world, or at least for the country?
06:17.0
Well, my advice for women is don't put yourself in a box.
06:23.0
As a kid, I never would have imagined myself to become a jiu-jitsu athlete.
06:27.0
It's so different.
06:29.0
I was so different before to who I am now.
06:31.0
And it's always important to keep an open mind
06:34.0
and be willing to take risks.
06:35.5
Because throughout my journey,
06:37.5
the risk-taking factor was one of the major steps I had to take
06:42.5
in order for me to move forward to a major chapter.
06:46.5
So I guess that's pretty much my advice.
06:49.5
Keep an open mind and be willing to take risks.
06:54.5
Alright. Mabuhay ang kababayan.
06:56.5
Thank you so much for speaking to us this morning.
06:58.5
Thank you. All the best for you.
07:00.5
Thank you as well. Thank you.
07:04.0
Thank you.
