Nina Daza-Puyat performs a reading of a recently published book,

The Legend of the Lumpiang Shanghai,

to Philippine Consul General in San Francisco,

Neil Ferrer, and his staff.

This was all part of the ceremonial turnover of her book

to the San Francisco Public Library.

Daza-Puyat wrote the book in 2022

and found Filipino illustrator Sean Erwin Santilla

to help create the story.

She says she's surprised at how fast her work

would be shared with children all over the world.

It's just, I never expected it,

to think that there will be more children,

not just Filipino children,

who will be able to read my story,

this story that is a work of fiction,

it's the legend of the fried spring rolls.

It's really my way of, like,

sharing my love and knowledge about Filipino food.

The Legend of the Lumpiang Shanghai

will head to the Filipino-American Center

of the San Francisco Public Library.

Philan librarian Abraham Flores Ignacio Jr. says

Daza-Puyat's book will join a collection

that includes fiction, literature, and history

that highlights the Filipino-American experience.

There's a number of authors that have come out,

Filipino authors and also Filipino-American publishers

that have published bilingual books, which is great.

So I'm glad we're bringing that to the fore

because we want to bring our culture to our people here

and to the broader community

to learn all about our culture and also our languages.

Hopefully this will increase more awareness

to our people, both, not just the young,

but the adults and everyone, you know,

interested to learn more about, you know,

the richness of our Philippine history and culture.

The book not only centers around the iconic Filipino dish,

but it also provides instructions

on how to make the fried spring rolls.

So I wrote this children's story

with a recipe in the back of the book

because I want the children to cook the recipe

also after they read the story.

If you want to cook the Lumpiang Shanghai,

imagine that after they read the story,

they'll want to tell their parents,

let's go and buy the ingredients

and make Lumpiang Shanghais.

To me, that's something that makes me happy.

Daza Puyat is the daughter of Nora Daza,

the acclaimed Filipina chef

and best-selling author of cookbooks.

Yes, of course, the recipe for the Lumpiang Shanghai

came from my mom's cookbook.

It's my mother's recipe.

And so I just took it a step further

and created this little children's story.

So it's also a tribute to my mother,

but it's also carving my own path.

Daza Puyat hopes to produce more fictional tales

based on her mother's recipes in the near future.
