[noun]  ear

Root: tainga
Usage Note Icon Usage Notes:
Although that's how it is spelled properly, we commonly pronounce the word as "tenga" such that it even gets spelled incorrectly that way at times. Even if we'd try to be more faithful to the correct spelling in pronouncing it, we don't make the sound of the "a" and "i" vowels distinct from each. We would pronounce still it as "tay-nga".

Two well-known Filipino dishes have "tainga" among their ingredients:

"tainga ng baboy" (pig's ear) - a popular Filipino appetizer is called "tokwa't baboy" (tofu [bean curd] and pork). The "pork" there is usually chopped pig's ear.

"tainga ng dagá" (rat's ear) - due to its resemblance, this is the Filipino term for the cloud ear mushroom or black fungus, which is used in some Chinese dishes. You will sometimes see this "tainga ng dagá" as an ingredient in "pancit", a popular Filipino noodle dish that is of Chinese origin.
