Markup Training: Accent Marks

« Back
Tutorial Pg. #5 of 6

Accent marks are important to indicate where the stress lies in the pronunciation of a word.

When using the accent markup, this website will always underline the vowel you indicate has a stress, and will show an accent mark (diacritical mark) over the stressed syllable's vowel, according to standard diacritical rules. ( generally, the accent mark is omitted if the 2nd-to-last syllable is stressed, but is otherwise shown as a small mark over the vowel ).

There are three types of accents marks in the standard Filipino accenting system.

Simple Accent:

To indicate stress in a word with no glottal stop (pahilis stress), simply put two "back tick" characters after the vowel of the syllable with the stress.

( on desktops and laptops, the "back tick" character is the one usually located to the left of the number "1" (one) on the keyboard )

Code:
kumusta``
Result:
kumustá

Code:
mabu``hay
Result:
mabuhay

Stress and Stop on Last Syllable:

To indicate there is a stress on the last syllable and also a stop on the last syllable (pakupya stress), use three "back tick" marks.

Code:
handa```
Result:
handâ

Code:
masama```
Result:
masamâ

Stress on 2nd-to-Last Syllable and Stop on Last Syllable:

To indicate there is a stress on the 2nd-to-last syllable and a stop on the last syllable (paiwa stress), use one "back tick" mark on the final vowel in the word.

Code:
bata`
Result:
ba

Code:
gusali`
Result:
gusa
