12 Best Things to Do in KASTORIA, GREECE (English) • Travel Guide PART 2 • The Poor Traveler Europe
00:58.1
A product that has driven its business.
01:00.0
A product that has driven its economy for the longest time.
01:03.8
Kastoria was a city of furriers or those who make, repair, and sell fur garments.
01:09.2
It is so embedded in the city's history that it is believed that the name itself came from the Greek word kastoras,
01:16.5
which means beaver, a primary source of fur.
01:20.6
For centuries, it had been a thriving industry.
01:23.9
But the world is changing, especially over the past few years.
01:28.3
While you still find fur stores, you'll find a lot of them.
01:30.0
While you still find fur stores and workshops in all shapes and sizes, some family-owned and others much bigger in scale, it is not as vibrant as before.
01:39.4
When we visited, we were told there were only 16 masters who could match skins, a delicate task that requires decades of experience.
01:48.2
Some find income in other fields, and one promising sector is tourism.
01:53.4
Set in the middle of a stunning lake in northern Greece, Kastoria may be a bit out of the way, or dare I say,
01:60.0
off the beaten path.
02:01.7
But those who go the extra mile are rewarded with a bombardment of unique experiences.
02:06.8
And because it's not frequented by hordes of tourists, not yet at least,
02:11.3
it can give you a more relaxed, more quiet, and more authentic experience.
02:17.0
And visit as soon as you can.
02:19.0
It's only a matter of time before more tourists find it.
02:22.6
After all, the city is blessed with countless natural, cultural, and historical attractions.
02:27.9
And we're going to show them to you!
02:30.0
Right now, starting with Lake Oresteada.
02:37.8
Because it is the heart of the Kastoria Regional Unit or Prefecture, Lake Oresteada is often called Kastoria Lake or Lake of Kastoria.
02:46.4
But the name Oresteada was in reference to Oreades, the mountain nymphs in Greek mythology.
02:52.8
But even today, there's something magical or mythical about it.
02:57.1
Its banks are lined with trees that turn fiery,
03:01.2
In winter, the lake freezes over.
03:03.5
And in spring and summer, locals and visitors alike spend much time boating and admiring the view.
03:10.3
The lake is fed by nine rivulets and bottom springs.
03:14.0
Formed 10 million years ago, it has become home to over 200 species of birds,
03:19.5
including silver pelicans, mute swans, mallards, and herons, making it a fantastic bird-watching site.
03:27.3
There's also a spot where you can feed ducks.
03:31.8
I don't know what these are.
03:33.8
I'll never forget the moments I spent by the lake shore, even when I was just walking with friends with a cup of coffee on one hand.
03:40.8
In a world of mass tourism, it's hard to find serenity, but it's something that Kastoria can give you in spades.
03:53.2
One of the lakeside spots you shouldn't miss is this, one of the city's greatest natural wonders.
03:59.2
One of the lakeside spots you shouldn't miss is this, one of the city's greatest natural wonders.
04:01.2
So-called because of the myth that a dragon once dwelled inside.
04:05.5
Also because inside it is a rock formation resembling it.
04:09.5
You see, nature has carved this cave 300 meters into this limestone hill for millions of years.
04:16.0
But it wasn't until the 1940s, after the adjacent road was opened, that locals discovered its existence.
04:23.1
And when explorers and scientists mapped it, they found multiple miniature lakes, halls, tunnels, and corridors
04:26.7

04:29.2
And when explorers and scientists mapped it, they found multiple miniature lakes, halls, tunnels, and corridors
04:30.2
adorned with countless stalactites, stalagmites, and other rock formations.
04:34.8
It also seemed to be untouched by any human species prior to its discovery.
04:39.7
But they found bones of cave bear species that are believed to have become extinct 10,000 years ago.
04:46.4
Don't worry, you don't need to trek hard to see it.
04:49.3
The entrance is just by the road, and the visitors' trail is well-established, making exploring as easy as a walk in the park.
04:59.2
If you walk northeast along the lake for 10 minutes, you'll stumble upon this historic site.
05:08.1
Castoria has 72 churches and chapels.
05:11.1
Many of them have roots that can be traced back to the Byzantine Empire.
05:14.8
But one of the oldest is this monastery.
05:17.6
Built in the 11th century, this monastic complex is believed to be built under Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos
05:25.7
as a tribute to the Virgin Mary after a commander,
05:29.2
who fought the battle against the Normans in 1083.
05:32.6
The main structure is this small timber-roofed basilica whose interiors are painted with centuries-old frescoes,
05:38.8
one of which depicts the end of days or the apocalypse.
05:42.4
Much of it is preserved, but the exterior paintings, which date back to the 13th century,
05:47.6
have been badly damaged during the Ottoman occupation.
05:51.1
In particular, the eyes of the figures were scratched out.
05:55.1
Across the monastery stands a plain tree
05:57.6
that is said to be over
06:01.3
And it is massive, with a circumference measuring around 8.5 meters.
06:06.4
And at 67 meters tall, it appears as a guard,
06:10.2
a silent witness to the site's long, rich, and colorful past.
06:20.6
When we first drove around the city, our attention was immediately captured
06:24.6
by a couple of small rustic chapels that seemed to have frozen in time.
06:28.9
Our guide Harris said that these are Byzantine churches,
06:32.5
and that they have almost 80 of them here.
06:36.1
I asked, 80 or 18?
06:38.9
Perhaps too softly because I didn't get a clarification.
06:42.2
But as we made it deeper into the city,
06:44.4
we were greeted by a parade of centuries-old chapels, one after another.
06:49.2
At one point during our stay, our count exceeded 18,
06:52.7
telling us that Castoria's faith and past are best epitomized by its spread of 80 churches.
06:58.1
eight zero that stand in its every nook and cranny they serve as not just religious but
07:03.8
historic and cultural monuments some are grand some are simple some are open to the public
07:10.9
some remain a private prayer house of local families that own them aside from the panahiya
07:17.0
monastery that i mentioned earlier these byzantine churches include the following
07:21.6
another postcard worthy but newly built church is the holy church of saint nicanor
07:32.7
close to esperos hotel my friend says had a field day collecting flowers
07:37.8
in an empty parking lot next to it
07:47.3
all around the city you'll find spots where you could be at peace and hilltops
07:51.3
where you could have fun on nuru yay!
07:51.6
you could see how the lake surrounds the city almost entirely,
07:55.2
creating a magnificent view that only a few urban centers can rival.
07:59.6
But perhaps the most accessible is the Hill of Prophet Elias,
08:03.9
named after miracle worker St. Elias or Elijah,
08:07.6
the patron saint of tailors and fur traders.
08:10.7
The most captivating structure here is this church, overlooking the city.
08:15.7
But praying isn't the only thing you could do in the area.
08:18.6
Within this complex, you'll find this lounge cafe.
08:20.6
Offering an unparalleled and unobstructed view of Castoria.
08:25.4
It was raining when we paid a visit.
08:27.7
While we could only imagine how stunning this vista would be when bathed in sunlight,
08:32.3
the gloomy atmosphere didn't dampen its beauty.
08:35.2
If anything, it created, um, a mood.
08:39.1
Yep, a perfect excuse to get comfortable in these couches next to the glass walls.
08:44.1
And preferably with a cup of coffee on one hand.
08:47.2
Or hot chocolate.
08:48.7
We couldn't decide so we ordered,
08:50.7
all three, classic hot choco, strawberry, and cookies and cream.
08:55.2
Courtesy of Christos, who owns the place.
08:58.0
It's such a gorgeous lounge.
08:60.0
It would be a shame to miss it if you're in Castoria.
09:03.2
This area is also along a popular walking trail that leads to the top of the hill.
09:07.9
And if you follow it, you'll pass by a basketball court
09:10.6
and these deer sanctuary where they keep rescued animals.
09:14.4
Where does the trail lead to?
09:16.6
Well, to this site.
09:20.6
It gives you an even higher vantage point.
09:25.9
In fact, from here, you could spot the Church of Prophet Elias in the foreground,
09:29.8
the lake in the middle, and the peninsula in the background.
09:35.3
We visited in spring, so the hillside is adorned with a blanket of yellow flowers,
09:39.9
adding brightness to the scene.
09:41.9
You know you're at the right spot when you see this meat house,
09:44.5
which serves treats to carnivores from burgers to signature steaks.
09:50.1
you'll find this stack of boulders.
09:52.2
It's a perfect photo spot.
09:54.2
Just please, please be careful when traversing these rocks.
09:58.0
Not too far away lies the Mountain Theater,
10:00.4
a small amphitheater which sometimes hosts performances.
10:09.9
Let's go back down from the mountains and head outside the city.
10:13.4
Just 20 minutes from Castoria proper, you'll find this Pilio,
10:17.1
a historic village on the banks of Lake Orestiada.
10:20.1
By historic, I mean really ancient.
10:23.5
This Pilio's claim to fame is this archaeological site,
10:26.9
which harbors the remains of a lakeshore community
10:29.7
that dates back to the Middle Neolithic Age.
10:32.8
That's around 5,260 BCE,
10:36.3
making it the oldest lake settlement discovered in Europe.
10:40.1
Back then, it was estimated to be home to about 3,000 individuals.
10:45.3
In 1932, a group of fishermen stumbled upon it when a drought exposed
10:49.4
some of their remains.
10:50.0
Over the next decades, more artifacts were found,
10:53.8
from bones to ceramics to the Dispilio tablet,
10:57.0
a wooden plaque bearing markings.
10:59.0
Today, a model of what the settlement must have looked like stand.
11:03.2
It's an open-air museum that welcomes tourists from all over the globe,
11:06.8
but most of them are domestic.
11:09.0
When we visited, we shared the site with grade schoolers on an educational tour.
11:13.9
There's also a shop by the exit, so don't forget to take home a souvenir.
11:24.6
Further southwest lies neighboring Nestorio,
11:27.6
another village with quite an eventful past.
11:30.2
It is said to be founded by Nestor, son of King Agamemnon.
11:34.0
Yes, this Agamemnon.
11:36.7
Nestor fled to this site at the foot of the Gramos Mountain with his brother Orestes.
11:42.4
Aside from the Neolithic finds, it is also widely believed to have hosted Alexander the Great
11:47.2
when he was just a boy, learning the art of war.
11:50.5
Like the city of Castoria, it has its share of old churches.
11:54.2
But we chose to climb to this chapel called Church of the Holy Spirit.
11:59.3
This small structure is perched on a picturesque cliff, allowing a gorgeous view of the village.
12:04.3
You could even spot some of its landmarks, including the four-store Afcos Gramos Boutique Hotel Resort.
12:10.3
This luxury hotel houses a restaurant serving sumptuous traditional Greek fare
12:14.6
and a terrace overlooking the village.
12:16.8
And of course, it offers accommodations too,
12:19.0
especially when there's a wave of visitors flooding into the area.
12:23.1
Why would tourists flock to this sleepy village, you ask?
12:26.6
The answer? Two words.
12:35.2
River Party is the biggest music festival in Greece,
12:38.6
and it happens here, on the banks of Aliakmon River in Nestoria.
12:43.7
For a few days in the summer, usually in August,
12:46.3
50,000 music fans gather and celebrate.
12:49.2
The music is played here, filling the usually tranquil village with melodies and cheers.
12:53.5
But even when the party is over, this part of the river is quite scenic.
12:58.0
When we visited, we were joined by architect Harris.
13:01.1
His father built this stone bridge that has become an icon for the event.
13:05.3
And when it was time to rebuild and reinforce it, he gladly stepped forward to do the job.
13:10.7
He also showed and taught us how to do stone skipping properly.
13:14.1
But I guess we just didn't have the knack for it.
13:19.0
On the other side of the lake, deep into the mountains, and accessible via winding roads,
13:27.4
you'll find this monastery, cradled in the municipality of Kleisoura.
13:31.9
This is the Panayias Kleisouras Monastery, built in the 14th century.
13:37.1
Aside from being a monastery, it also served as a fortress for a time.
13:41.2
But it's perhaps best known among members of the Greek Orthodox Church
13:44.6
as the home of St. Sophia.
13:47.1
It is believed that the Panayia,
13:48.6
or the Virgin Mary, appeared to her numerous times,
13:51.6
and on one occasion instructed her to go to this monastery, and she did.
13:56.7
She slept in the fireplace of its kitchen.
13:59.3
She performed miracles which attracted believers to the site.
14:03.3
But on May 6, 1974, she passed away and this monastery also served as her final resting place.
14:10.5
Today, her relics are still kept here,
14:13.3
and every May 6, a glorification ceremony is held in her honor.
14:18.6
The church is a bit of a mystery because their visit coincided with the occasion.
14:21.7
So we were able to witness the event this year.
14:31.1
Back to the city center, we'd also love to show you another chapel.
14:35.0
This one isn't among the 80 Byzantine churches as it was built more recently,
14:39.4
at least compared to most churches here.
14:42.2
This is St. Paraskevi Dragota Orthodox Church,
14:45.2
tucked in a residential corner just a couple of blocks from the lake.
14:48.6
It wasn't part of our original itinerary, but our host Sonia wanted us to see her absolute favorite spot in the city.
14:55.8
She said that while she frequented the vicinity, she had never been inside the church.
15:00.7
She would only admire it from the outside and watch the candle that had been kept lit by the families taking care of the church.
15:07.4
We spent a few minutes here and were headed for the lake.
15:10.6
But the caretaker was apparently watching us.
15:13.7
Before we could leave, he offered to give us a tour.
15:18.0
He opened the church to us.
15:20.9
According to him, it was built in 1899.
15:24.0
Yes, over 120 years ago.
15:27.2
It has undergone a lot of changes over the past century, but the original columns remain standing.
15:33.6
He led us across the nave, past the iconostasis, and into the sanctuary where the columns can be found.
15:40.4
He also let us admire and film the interiors including the artworks.
15:44.3
Such a lovely historic church.
15:46.5
This is what we love about the church.
15:48.2
It's not just about Castoria.
15:49.2
Its every corner is filled with unexpected finds.
15:52.6
From unassuming but age-old structures like this, to picturesque parks, to scrumptious food.
15:58.9
Speaking of food,
16:05.0
I already said it in our previous video, but I'll say it again.
16:08.5
Out of all the places we visited in the Balkan region, this is where we had some of the best meals that raised our palate.
16:15.4
Every single ingredient,
16:16.9
from the much-bragged-about Florina peppers to the succulent lamb chops is high-quality and its freshness is undeniable.
16:25.2
Some of the traditional dishes you should sink your teeth into include samrades, which are pickled cabbage stuffed with minced meat and rice.
16:32.8
Every family has its own take on it, so don't be surprised if it tastes different in different places.
16:38.8
Another local staple is the Castorian giant beans.
16:43.8
These massive beans, while thin-skinned, must be soaked in water.
16:46.9
Soaked overnight to achieve the right softness.
16:49.3
They are then baked usually with herbs, tomatoes, and meat.
16:53.1
One of our favorites is the baggio, which is brined cheese prepared Saganaki-style.
16:58.2
Some restaurants serve it with fried egg, others fry it to a crisp.
17:02.5
Regardless of the cooking method, the slight saltiness of the cheese always shines through.
17:08.1
And these are just the appetizers.
17:10.1
For main course, there's not much seafood here, and the go-to is a platter of various meats grilled to perfection.
17:17.1
Lamb, beef, chicken, pork, and sometimes wild boar, souvlaki, kebab, sausage.
17:23.8
It's a meat-fest!
17:26.1
For dessert, I noticed that many households and restaurants serve fruit confit or candied fruits,
17:31.2
which is a way of preserving cherries, oranges, and many other fruits in sugar.
17:38.1
Even this signature cake that we were served in Cristalopihi near the border with Albania was topped with candied citron or lime.
17:45.6
It's a sweet treat!
17:46.7
That you shouldn't miss!
