This podcast episode is brought to you by
01:04.0
AB Music Creative.
01:06.0
And the podcast will begin in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
01:12.0
Ladies and gentlemen, big round of applause,
01:17.0
Thank you. Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
01:20.0
You know, the reason why I'm excited for this,
01:22.0
I had the pleasure of having the conductor
01:26.0
of the Filipino-American Symphony Orchestra,
01:30.0
Robert Schroeder, on the podcast.
01:33.0
And that's a different kind of music genre.
01:37.0
You know, that's interesting you say that
01:38.0
because you say the philharmonic.
01:40.0
That's what I do.
01:41.0
I created a group called the philharmonic
01:44.0
but it's all acapella.
01:45.0
Okay. What type of songs do you sing?
01:47.0
We do a lot of...
01:49.0
So first of all, if you don't know what the philharmonic is,
01:52.0
it's just an acapella group of all Filipino singers.
01:57.0
And we do mainly pop music, little R&B.
02:01.0
But we're very like 90s inspired.
02:04.0
So, you know, that whole thing.
02:06.0
But then again, Jules, with regard to the philharmonics,
02:09.0
how does that compare to...
02:11.0
Oh my God, I don't want to say it but I'll say it
02:13.0
because you think I'm going to say it but I might say it
02:15.0
but I don't want to say the pentatonics.
02:18.0
Well, here's the thing.
02:19.0
We love them because the reason that we started our group
02:22.0
is because I went to school with one of the members of the group.
02:28.0
Was pentatonics in existence when you went to school
02:31.0
with one of the members?
02:33.0
Well, at the time, he was doing the acapella group at our college
02:38.0
and he left so then he told me to take his spot
02:41.0
in the college group.
02:43.0
So then once Pentatonix got on the show
02:45.0
and they won that show, he told me,
02:47.0
he's like, hey, the next season the show's coming up,
02:50.0
you should put a group together looking for, you know,
02:52.0
something like kind of like ethnic.
02:56.0
I'm like, listen, like Filipinos, you know, we need a platform.
02:59.0
So I made a Filipino group.
03:01.0
And so we were very much inspired by their path
03:04.0
and also obviously like he's...
03:06.0
I mean, that's the niche right there.
03:09.0
Original songs, how many do you have?
03:11.0
We have three original songs.
03:14.0
Like, you know, it's so hard in this industry with acapella music
03:17.0
because it's very much a cover driven world.
03:20.0
So it's been like kind of a challenge going into original music,
03:24.0
but hopefully we have more lined up.
03:26.0
So far we have three.
03:28.0
So what's your voice?
03:32.0
Like I do like...
03:34.0
No, just kidding.
03:38.0
So it's like, especially in acapella, it's like vocal bass.
03:41.0
It's not a lot of like normal singing.
03:43.0
Typically, it's just a lot of like...
03:46.0
and things like that.
03:47.0
But, you know, it's important.
03:49.0
It's very important.
03:51.0
You know, people think it's not, but it is the pulse of the song.
03:55.0
That's something that people don't realize about bass players in general, right?
03:58.0
It's like, there's a reason why this is the rhythm section.
04:02.0
And like a lot of it is like, you know,
04:04.0
you handle a lot of this like emotional, you know, story of a song,
04:08.0
but also it's, can you keep that time?
04:11.0
You keep a groove.
04:12.0
Like, I don't know if you're familiar with Yesterday by The Beatles.
04:16.0
That bass line drives the song.
04:19.0
Boom, boom, boom.
04:21.0
And then it goes down.
04:22.0
Boom, boom, boom.
04:27.0
And there's so many different things that I can do when I'm covering a song.
04:30.0
And I'm thinking about, you know,
04:31.0
obviously I have to be in charge of the chord progression
04:33.0
and I need to make sure that, you know, we stay in tune.
04:35.0
But also, what can I do to change this groove up to make it feel like a different song?
04:39.0
So there's a lot of things that I think is like, it's really important,
04:41.0
but also it's like people don't recognize whatever the bass does.
04:45.0
I don't think so.
04:46.0
My wife is a bass player.
04:50.0
I'm glad we get people that appreciate it.
04:51.0
Actually, Nino's wife is a bass player.
04:55.0
So I'm surrounded by the right people.
05:01.0
So there are five of you.
05:03.0
You started the group.
05:07.0
So imagine, the only bass player, actually, no.
05:12.0
He did start the group.
05:14.0
It was for you two.
05:15.0
It was the drummer who started the group.
05:17.0
It was a bass player who did the legwork, Adam Clayton.
05:20.0
How hard was it to get members to join you?
05:25.0
You know where I'm going at, right?
05:26.0
No, yeah, exactly.
05:27.0
I mean, if you were kind of like the soprano or maybe ten or one,
05:33.0
and you're like, I'm starting a group.
05:36.0
But you're the bass player.
05:40.0
And here's the thing is, we didn't get a lot of like,
05:44.0
it was hard to find people at first because we were picking from other acapella groups
05:49.0
who know other choirs.
05:50.0
And it's like, obviously, there are so many talented Filipino singers,
05:53.0
but are there Filipino singers who know acapella and know the style?
05:57.0
Because it's a hard thing to know if you don't have any experience doing so.
06:00.0
At first, we're trying to figure out how can we do this,
06:02.0
especially if the goal was to get on TV.
06:04.0
So, you know, I knew a guy and his name is Vijay.
06:07.0
He was on The Voice.
06:08.0
He auditioned for The Voice, so I called him up.
06:11.0
And once we had him, it was like, you know, we really were rounding out a thing.
06:15.0
So, the rest of the people we found were like just friends at that point.
06:18.0
And luckily, you know, we've been together for like 10 years now.
06:23.0
So, it's been like just a very fortunate thing for us because it was like,
06:26.0
can we figure this out within a month and audition for the show?
06:29.0
And we did, and here we are, you know.
06:31.0
You said being in an acapella group is a hard thing, and I agree.
06:35.0
Because singers have a tendency to...
06:42.0
Okay, let me rephrase that.
06:44.0
People are going to hate me for phrasing it.
06:46.0
Is this a singers versus musicians debate?
06:49.0
Singers have egos.
06:54.0
There are five of you doing different parts,
06:57.0
and that in itself is already hard
06:59.0
because everybody wants their parts to be heard,
07:01.0
but sometimes their parts need to be felt, not heard.
07:05.0
And an acapella group, sometimes mic or no mic,
07:08.0
sometimes you're given one condenser mic or two.
07:11.0
You have to be able to be your own sound engineer on stage
07:14.0
and sing beside the next person.
07:16.0
Beside you, you...
07:19.0
Am I getting the...
07:22.0
So, now that I've painted it, let's go macro.
07:27.0
Tell me the dynamics inside of it.
07:29.0
From the time that you guys go buy...
07:31.0
Who's buying burger? Who's buying takeout?
07:33.0
And then you guys meet at rehearsal. What goes on?
07:36.0
Well, here's the thing that I think about often.
07:38.0
I like to think about a band, and you might feel this way,
07:42.0
as like a sports team.
07:44.0
Everyone has to have a role, and everyone contributes in their own way.
07:47.0
And there's so many different things that people don't think about
07:49.0
when it comes to music,
07:51.0
because you have to be a family in order to make music.
07:54.0
And you have to prioritize the music first.
07:56.0
The thing is, not only can you be the best drummer you can be,
08:01.0
you also have to be like, okay, can you drum?
08:03.0
But also, are you also someone who can pick the place we're going to go eat?
08:07.0
Can you do social media?
08:12.0
So, that was an important consideration when I was forming the group, too.
08:16.0
I was like, do we have personalities in here
08:18.0
who are people who will contribute no matter what?
08:21.0
And am I willing to be the person to set that example first
08:24.0
because I'm making the group?
08:25.0
So, will I do everything I can in my power to make sure that this group thrives?
08:31.0
I was thinking about that, and I was like,
08:33.0
I see that in him, and I want him to be in the group.
08:36.0
And luckily, I was right.
08:39.0
Because at any point, these people could have been like,
08:41.0
no, why would I help with that?
08:46.0
And leave the bass voice.
08:51.0
Okay, now, who decides which song to cover?
08:56.0
It always is very democratic about what we can do.
08:59.0
There's plenty of times where we covered a song,
09:01.0
and it sounds like trash.
09:02.0
And I'm just like, no.
09:04.0
Throw this one away.
09:06.0
No matter how much we worked on it, this is not the one for us.
09:10.0
Everyone has an opportunity to pitch a song,
09:12.0
and we all vote on it together.
09:13.0
Is this going to make sense for our brand?
09:14.0
Is this going to make sense numbers-wise?
09:17.0
Things like that.
09:18.0
But at the end of the day,
09:19.0
if someone's really passionate about something,
09:21.0
and they pitch it,
09:22.0
we have to support this person because it's art.
09:24.0
And it's their art.
09:26.0
So now, you've agreed on a song.
09:31.0
We have a couple strategies.
09:33.0
We do some group arranging,
09:34.0
which is we'll just lock ourselves in a room.
09:36.0
You have an hour to figure it out.
09:38.0
An hour to figure it out.
09:39.0
Like your bass line, you have to figure it out.
09:44.0
So we've done that strategy.
09:45.0
But also, we have times where we're like,
09:47.0
okay, we have a little more time.
09:48.0
Can you just arrange it yourself?
09:49.0
We'll open Sibelius, get our keyboards out,
09:51.0
and do it ourselves.
09:53.0
When you open Sibelius,
09:54.0
do you do yourself-edge?
09:57.0
All of us in the group,
09:59.0
we're all in choir,
10:01.0
and we grew up in middle school choir forever.
10:03.0
So we're definitely nerds in that way.
10:05.0
So you see notes,
10:06.0
you can sing it just from...
10:14.0
Don't give me anything hard.
10:17.0
We're all pretty good readers at this point.
10:20.0
So someone writes it,
10:22.0
and then you look at it.
10:29.0
That's your part.
10:31.0
Move on and go higher up.
10:32.0
But basically, yes.
10:35.0
it's figure out the key.
10:37.0
And here's the bass line.
10:38.0
Can you do the melody and just harmonize it?
10:41.0
Oh, no, we don't like it just harmonized.
10:43.0
Let's do background parts.
10:44.0
Can you sound like a guitar?
10:49.0
How do you guys argue?
10:54.0
This is so unfair.
10:56.0
This is so unfair.
10:57.0
I should invite the whole band next time.
10:59.0
I'll invite all of you next time.
11:00.0
My opinion is the only one that matters.
11:06.0
How do you guys argue?
11:07.0
We argue in a way that's like...
11:10.0
I'm always kind of the mediator,
11:12.0
and I'm trying to figure out...
11:14.0
I'm making sure that our priority is
11:16.0
creative satisfaction.
11:19.0
It's not about how you're feeling.
11:21.0
You feel like you're going to get hurt by this.
11:23.0
Now, is this the best music we can possibly make?
11:26.0
So I think at the end of the day,
11:28.0
over 10 years in now,
11:29.0
everyone knows that
11:30.0
I don't care how everyone's feeling.
11:32.0
I want to make sure that
11:33.0
everyone's feeling good about the product.
11:38.0
do you have these issues?
11:42.0
Especially when there were girl issues
11:44.0
back when we were single.
11:46.0
No rehearsal today.
11:47.0
Why? They broke up.
11:50.0
These are the factors that we all have to deal with
11:53.0
because we're all people.
11:55.0
It's a very human thing to create music together,
11:58.0
but the only thing you can do is be like,
12:01.0
is the music going to be good?
12:03.0
That's what we have to do.
12:04.0
So now, the music that you guys cover,
12:10.0
We've done a couple OPM songs
12:14.0
like over the years.
12:16.0
Like Gary Valenchana stuff?
12:28.0
We do like Sarah Animo.
12:35.0
when we were over,
12:37.0
our first time in the Philippines,
12:38.0
when we sang over there,
12:40.0
we did a couple more.
12:41.0
I'm forgetting exactly what songs we did,
12:44.0
that's the wave, man.
12:45.0
There's a ton of good OPM songs.
12:49.0
when did you know
12:52.0
that singing was going to be something
12:54.0
that you would embrace as an adult?
12:59.0
we were very fortunate in that
13:01.0
within our first year of being a group,
13:05.0
we got on a movie,
13:06.0
we got on another TV show.
13:10.0
as a 21 year old,
13:12.0
I have no choice.
13:13.0
I have to pursue this
13:14.0
and I have to do this
13:15.0
because this is an opportunity
13:16.0
that people will never get typically,
13:17.0
especially as a bass singer.
13:18.0
When would I ever get to do this?
13:20.0
You know what I mean?
13:21.0
I feel like I'm fleecing everyone.
13:23.0
I better love it and enjoy it.
13:25.0
So I think it wasn't hard for me
13:27.0
and it wasn't hard for my family either
13:29.0
yo, yeah, enjoy this.
13:33.0
And he said that,
13:34.0
shout out Julian,
13:36.0
he said he had no plan B.
13:39.0
This was kind of like your plan B
13:41.0
that turned out into the main plan.
13:46.0
I was studying biology at school.
13:51.0
Yeah, I studied biology
13:52.0
and then I got the call from my friend,
13:57.0
dropped everything,
13:58.0
made the group out on TV.
13:59.0
What'd your parents say?
14:00.0
I would assume your parents
14:01.0
are Filipino, right?
14:03.0
So they had something to say.
14:04.0
They had something to say.
14:05.0
My dad is an artist.
14:07.0
Incredible artist.
14:08.0
And he was always,
14:14.0
I want to do something creative.
14:17.0
why would you do anything else?
14:19.0
I want to hear the dynamics
14:20.0
of this conversation.
14:21.0
So your dad is an artist
14:22.0
and he loves to paint
14:23.0
and all his life,
14:24.0
all he did was paint.
14:32.0
Dad wants to stay out of it
14:33.0
because dad might be on the radar
14:34.0
and it's not working.
14:35.0
So dad doesn't want to get involved
14:38.0
until son, Jules,
14:41.0
I want to be in music.
14:42.0
What was the conversation like?
14:45.0
this was not far off.
14:47.0
But my dad is like,
14:49.0
just such a good artist
14:52.0
he wants to have more fame.
14:55.0
But on my mom's side,
14:57.0
she was basically saying,
14:59.0
I support you in doing this,
15:01.0
but what are the chances
15:03.0
it's not going to work out
15:04.0
because Filipinos in American television,
15:07.0
what are the chances
15:08.0
it's going to work?
15:09.0
So she's healthy,
15:11.0
skeptical about it,
15:13.0
but my dad was like,
15:14.0
what are you talking about?
15:16.0
I'm going to share something
15:17.0
with you in the audience.
15:18.0
Everything you say
15:19.0
before the word but
15:22.0
The truth is after the word but.
15:24.0
So if you repeat your mom's sentence,
15:29.0
I think you're good,
15:31.0
scratch everything she said
15:33.0
If I ask her about that now,
15:35.0
I never said that.
15:36.0
I never said Filipinos don't.
15:41.0
how many appearances on TV
15:42.0
and now you finally say
15:46.0
you started your group.
15:47.0
Did you ditch school?
15:49.0
while starting your group,
15:50.0
did you drop out of biology?
15:54.0
I went back during the pandemic,
15:55.0
finished just to make
15:57.0
my whole family be like,
16:02.0
it was just music,
16:04.0
just making videos
16:12.0
When you were growing up,
16:14.0
you knew how to sing.
16:15.0
You knew you have that talent.
16:19.0
But why wasn't there any vision board
16:22.0
or vision to start a group
16:23.0
until a friend of yours
16:24.0
had to call you up?
16:26.0
Does that make sense?
16:27.0
As opposed to me,
16:31.0
just to give contrast,
16:32.0
I did not know music,
16:35.0
I just wanted to be popular
16:36.0
and be in a band.
16:38.0
And that's what I told my mom.
16:40.0
I just want to be in a band.
16:42.0
you don't even know how to sing
16:43.0
or play any instrument.
16:45.0
but I just want to be there.
16:46.0
As opposed to you,
16:47.0
you had the talent,
16:49.0
but you didn't start a group
16:51.0
until your friend told you
16:53.0
to start a group.
16:55.0
That is really interesting.
16:58.0
it's hard to pinpoint
16:59.0
when these kind of shifts
17:00.0
happen in your brain
17:01.0
because over the years,
17:04.0
your fearlessness goes away
17:05.0
as a child, right?
17:06.0
And everyone's pounding you with,
17:08.0
be realistic and what can you do?
17:10.0
So for the longest time,
17:12.0
I'm just gonna do
17:14.0
the next realistic step for me.
17:17.0
And I had decided,
17:19.0
probably honestly,
17:22.0
I got the call from my friend,
17:24.0
I'm done with music,
17:28.0
Focus on my biology classes
17:31.0
that makes more sense.
17:36.0
I just never thought
17:37.0
that this was a possibility
17:38.0
for someone like me to do.
17:40.0
I didn't feel like I had
17:44.0
the talent that was
17:47.0
and everyone knew
17:48.0
that you had to be a star.
17:50.0
if I were to get there,
17:51.0
I would do something great with it,
17:53.0
how I'd ever get there
17:54.0
is the idea that I had.
17:56.0
It took someone else's vision
17:57.0
for me to help tell me
17:58.0
that, you know what,
17:59.0
I can be a part of this,
18:01.0
There's a bunch of people
18:02.0
who are doing this kind of thing,
18:03.0
but why can't I do it?
18:04.0
But you know what's amazing also?
18:07.0
Think about it, right?
18:10.0
you trusted this person
18:12.0
who told you to start the group.
18:14.0
And when I look back,
18:18.0
what I was thinking.
18:20.0
you dropped out of school
18:21.0
and you did all this?
18:23.0
Something really happened
18:24.0
to me in that moment
18:25.0
where I was like,
18:29.0
But let's talk about
18:30.0
the mindset of ingraining
18:33.0
or real situation,
18:35.0
real situations in kids.
18:38.0
Kids are inherently dreamers,
18:42.0
as kids we were dreamers,
18:43.0
we dreamt of being
18:51.0
especially Filipino parents
18:54.0
to be on the safe side
18:57.0
let's be realistic.
19:03.0
how did that affect you?
19:05.0
And I'm not putting
19:06.0
your parents on blast
19:07.0
because my parents
19:08.0
were the same way too.
19:09.0
But how did it affect you
19:12.0
when they were telling you
19:17.0
the thing is with my family
19:19.0
is my parents are
19:20.0
like really supportive
19:22.0
about creative things
19:23.0
but there's always
19:24.0
just small comments
19:25.0
from the rest of your family
19:27.0
you know what I mean?
19:28.0
It's like small things
19:30.0
your son is doing this.
19:31.0
It's not to discourage you,
19:32.0
it's not to be mean
19:35.0
they're trying to look out
19:39.0
This episode is brought
19:40.0
to you by Leo Bato
19:44.0
It's definitely something
19:45.0
that I don't want to have
19:49.0
there's so many opportunity.
19:50.0
We're in the States.
19:52.0
there's so many opportunity
19:53.0
to make it happen
19:54.0
especially with everything
19:56.0
all the resources.
19:58.0
There's no reason
19:59.0
to discourage someone
20:00.0
if they truly love it
20:02.0
there's always some way
20:03.0
to make it happen
20:06.0
I think you don't realize
20:08.0
because you just go
20:10.0
but then you look back
20:17.0
that fearlessness
20:18.0
because you just don't realize
20:19.0
how much it affects you
20:22.0
Just an increment, right?
20:23.0
You'll end up somewhere else.
20:25.0
those comments, man,
20:32.0
You just cast a doubt, right?
20:35.0
they're on a completely different path.
20:40.0
is listening to us right now,
20:42.0
they should watch their words,
20:45.0
if you say something good
20:47.0
it may not mean anything to you
20:49.0
but 10 years down the line,
20:50.0
that child is doing
20:51.0
something perfect
20:53.0
something that actually
20:54.0
touched that person's heart.
20:56.0
Something like that.
20:57.0
Even if it's just that day, man.
21:01.0
that means a lot to someone
21:02.0
who's doing something
21:06.0
everyone else is trying to
21:07.0
discourage them from doing it
21:08.0
so they just need one person
21:09.0
and they just need one comment.
21:12.0
how's the passion going?
21:14.0
but here's the thing
21:20.0
we're doing the TV thing
21:21.0
and it's exciting,
21:24.0
trying to be like,
21:26.0
that makes me feel like
21:27.0
I don't know how to do this
21:28.0
and I'm trying to
21:29.0
because we've been doing it
21:30.0
for 10 years now.
21:32.0
you're challenging yourself.
21:33.0
We're trying to find
21:34.0
other things to do
21:38.0
new interests that I have
21:39.0
so I've been like
21:40.0
doing my tour thing.
21:43.0
a few months ago.
21:45.0
did you do in Europe?
21:47.0
it was like three weeks.
21:51.0
do you travel light
21:52.0
or do you travel with a crew?
21:57.0
They just bring their mics for us
21:59.0
and we're good to go.
22:02.0
what's your technical rider?
22:03.0
It's just in-ear monitors
22:07.0
and then just five mics,
22:14.0
You don't need it, yeah.
22:17.0
Especially when you're on the road like that,
22:19.0
you just keep it stripped down
22:20.0
and it's like fine,
22:21.0
we don't, you know.
22:22.0
Have you guys tried rap?
22:26.0
I do a little rap
22:27.0
like in a little moments like that
22:30.0
I can't pull this off
22:32.0
I'll tell you a story real quick.
22:34.0
we opened for the rapper Future.
22:35.0
Do you know Future?
22:38.0
We opened for Future
22:40.0
we just weren't thinking about
22:41.0
what it would come across
22:43.0
that actually likes
22:46.0
So they're watching us
22:47.0
and I'm about to do my rap
22:51.0
this is so awkward.
22:52.0
I'm about to do a rap
22:53.0
in front of people
22:54.0
who love hip-hop.
22:55.0
So I was trying to do it
22:57.0
everyone in the audience
22:58.0
is staring at me like,
23:00.0
what you're doing.
23:01.0
Like this is not rap.
23:04.0
it was so embarrassing
23:05.0
so like I kind of like
23:06.0
toned down the whole rap thing
23:08.0
let's just, you know,
23:09.0
do a little singing
23:12.0
with that sort of thing
23:14.0
like the audience
23:21.0
someone get the Filipino
23:22.0
Jackson 5 off the stage.
23:27.0
That's the thing, man.
23:28.0
You gotta know the audience.
23:31.0
like who said this nicely,
23:38.0
I'm not gonna give
23:39.0
I'm not gonna pay
23:42.0
who hasn't invested
23:43.0
anything in any information
23:53.0
What was I gonna say?
24:13.0
There's so many interesting things
24:14.0
that happen in pop music
24:17.0
don't appreciate.
24:19.0
There's a ton of good music out there
24:20.0
and everyone's like,
24:21.0
ah, it's just pop.
24:22.0
It's just top 40.
24:23.0
There's so much interesting stuff
24:24.0
happening instrumentally all the time
24:26.0
I hear a baseline
24:27.0
and I'm driving in my car
24:29.0
we gotta cover this.
24:32.0
because I don't wanna just be
24:33.0
singing whole notes.
24:36.0
What else is nice?
24:37.0
Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam
24:38.0
did Lost in Emotions.
24:40.0
Boom, boom, boom, boom.
24:41.0
Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
24:42.0
Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
24:43.0
Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
24:44.0
Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
24:45.0
Whenever we do this stuff
24:46.0
on the Late Late Show,
24:47.0
he has us record.
24:50.0
Oh, James Corden.
24:51.0
Yeah, James Corden.
24:52.0
Whenever we do that,
24:53.0
we have to record
24:54.0
probably 20 songs.
24:57.0
the celebrity guest is on that day,
24:58.0
we can figure out
24:59.0
what sounds best on their voice,
25:00.0
what they wanna do.
25:04.0
from the 70s, 80s
25:06.0
man, there's so many
25:07.0
good baselines out there.
25:10.0
singing all this stuff.
25:11.0
Can you do the baseline
25:14.0
Let's Groove to...
25:25.0
Yeah, that's a good one.
25:26.0
You guys should do that!
25:28.0
The whole Boogie Wonderland?
25:30.0
Boogie Wonderland.
25:31.0
Yeah, that whole era
25:37.0
if you guys can...
25:39.0
We'll talk offline.
25:41.0
Let's not share it
25:44.0
Private conversation.
25:47.0
dynamics amongst yourselves
25:49.0
because that's important.
25:52.0
to last 10 years,
25:55.0
Even the Eraserheads
25:58.0
after a little bit over 10 years.
26:04.0
different directions,
26:07.0
Different perspectives.
26:08.0
But they're back together.
26:10.0
They're the largest
26:15.0
Probably the biggest band
26:16.0
in the Philippines
26:17.0
and among Filipinos.
26:22.0
How do you guys deal with it?
26:23.0
Like you mentioned a while ago,
26:24.0
like serve the music.
26:26.0
you can't discount
26:30.0
10 years is a decade.
26:31.0
That's a lot of time.
26:33.0
And we started our...
26:35.0
we started all of us
26:37.0
in our early 20s.
26:42.0
like the whole decade
26:43.0
just to doing that.
26:45.0
I think the important thing
26:46.0
is realizing that
26:47.0
we're gonna be a group
26:48.0
as long as this makes sense,
26:51.0
But as long as this,
26:52.0
as long as it makes sense,
26:53.0
that's subjective, right?
26:55.0
And it's the thing is like
26:59.0
like individualism
27:02.0
the minute you're like
27:03.0
telling people that
27:04.0
you have to be in the group,
27:05.0
it's gonna fall apart
27:07.0
And guilt tripping them
27:08.0
into not being a part of it,
27:10.0
the thing that you have to realize is
27:12.0
to make each other's lives better.
27:14.0
And that's the sacrifice
27:16.0
But the minute that
27:17.0
that takes too much time for you,
27:19.0
But we've been very fortunate
27:20.0
that everyone feels that
27:21.0
we have a purpose here still.
27:23.0
And we wanna keep sharing our music
27:24.0
and sharing Filipino culture.
27:27.0
another group now
27:28.0
called Philosophy.
27:31.0
With an F-I-L, yes.
27:34.0
there's so much Filipino talent
27:38.0
why don't we have
27:39.0
a platform for Filipino singers
27:41.0
So now we created
27:43.0
for a bunch of people
27:45.0
and other Filipinos who sing
27:46.0
to make another group
27:47.0
so they can go do tours,
27:48.0
they can do their own stuff.
27:49.0
Because it's just
27:52.0
we all now have another purpose
27:54.0
how can we grow that platform
27:56.0
like younger Filipinos
27:57.0
to do what we did
27:58.0
because everyone deserves that.
28:05.0
or is this a shared vision
28:06.0
among the five of you?
28:07.0
It started off with me
28:09.0
creating something
28:15.0
And then the minute
28:16.0
we got on the TV show
28:18.0
this means a lot more
28:20.0
and for our culture.
28:21.0
So I think we decided that
28:22.0
we all have to be part
28:25.0
and everyone has to help out
28:26.0
and figure out ways
28:27.0
to help grow this
28:28.0
because especially
28:31.0
and we were like the
28:32.0
You did Pitch Perfect 2?
28:34.0
So we were the Filipino group
28:36.0
So once we were there
28:37.0
we got a bunch of love
28:38.0
from people back home.
28:40.0
this is much bigger
28:41.0
than what we thought
28:43.0
It's like you guys
28:49.0
What the Black Eyed Peas
28:56.0
Shout out to Apple.
28:57.0
Kaling talaga no?
29:00.0
we just knew that
29:01.0
we have to keep doing
29:04.0
it just means a lot
29:05.0
to the community.
29:07.0
with this in mind
29:09.0
about the community.
29:12.0
Sometimes the Filipino
29:13.0
community can be harsh
29:21.0
It's a whole thing.
29:23.0
were you born and raised
29:25.0
In the States, yeah.
29:28.0
where at the time
29:29.0
the Filipino community
29:30.0
was smaller in Vegas
29:31.0
but it's starting
29:32.0
to get pretty big now.
29:35.0
I think the mentality
29:36.0
that I've had an issue
29:37.0
with the Filipino community
29:38.0
in this area typically
29:39.0
is like crab mentality.
29:43.0
it's hard working
29:44.0
with different people
29:48.0
why are you working
29:52.0
aren't we all in this together?
29:54.0
we're not established
29:55.0
enough to be doing this
29:57.0
we find in each other.
29:59.0
I'm grateful for,
30:00.0
we're trying to grow
30:01.0
while we gotta support each other.
30:03.0
We cannot have one troll
30:04.0
in the community.
30:06.0
And that's why I'm grateful
30:07.0
for platforms like yours.
30:08.0
Thank you for supporting it also.
30:10.0
this is why we're here
30:11.0
because we need to get
30:14.0
I'm not here to tear anyone down.
30:15.0
We shouldn't be ever
30:16.0
having to do that
30:17.0
but there's so many cases
30:18.0
where I've seen that
30:20.0
with different people,
30:23.0
I'm not here to pick a side.
30:25.0
we're all on the same team
30:26.0
I thought, right?
30:29.0
we're all born and raised
30:30.0
in the States or?
30:33.0
So, second gen Filipinos.
30:35.0
Carrying the flag actually.
30:39.0
Whatever we can do.
30:41.0
I think that's become
30:42.0
a big mission for us.
30:43.0
You could have easily
30:46.0
I don't want to have
30:47.0
any part of this.
30:49.0
Because you are under
30:52.0
in representing the community.
30:59.0
who are born and raised.
31:00.0
Yeah, I have five kids.
31:03.0
if there's another,
31:04.0
there's no other.
31:06.0
all born and raised
31:07.0
in the US, right?
31:09.0
And I want to know,
31:12.0
where did you get
31:18.0
that your mom and dad
31:21.0
Yeah, it comes from,
31:23.0
I think also growing up
31:24.0
in an area that didn't have
31:25.0
an alternative Filipino.
31:26.0
So I wasn't proud
31:28.0
for the longest time.
31:30.0
Can we talk about that?
31:32.0
So I think the issue was,
31:34.0
You weren't proud.
31:36.0
You weren't really ecstatic.
31:38.0
No, it's like I knew
31:40.0
but it was hard for me
31:41.0
to really internalize
31:43.0
that it was something
31:44.0
until I left my area,
31:48.0
Was it Henderson?
31:49.0
Which part of Vegas?
31:51.0
Where the flips are.
31:57.0
There's two seafood cities now.
32:02.0
times are changing.
32:03.0
And a jet Korean barbecue,
32:04.0
which I'm not going to.
32:06.0
Okay, go, go, go, Jules.
32:08.0
Okay, so for the longest time.
32:10.0
Yeah, I didn't feel proud.
32:11.0
So I think part of the reason
32:12.0
I started the group
32:13.0
was because I wanted that.
32:15.0
I wanted to be proud
32:17.0
and then like finally
32:18.0
getting love from different
32:19.0
Filipino communities.
32:21.0
I mean, this is the best
32:22.0
thing in the world.
32:23.0
Like being Filipino
32:27.0
epiphany come though?
32:28.0
When that turn around
32:29.0
like, wait a minute,
32:32.0
When did it come?
32:34.0
If I'm being real,
32:37.0
I don't think it came until
32:38.0
we were on the sing-off
32:40.0
of the first TV show
32:42.0
Because we did a couple
32:43.0
episodes and the word
32:45.0
around the community.
32:46.0
Like, there's a Filipino
32:48.0
let's go to a taping.
32:49.0
Isn't it so weird?
32:50.0
None of you were born
32:51.0
in the Philippines.
32:52.0
You guys are all Americans.
32:53.0
And they were calling
32:57.0
by that third episode,
32:59.0
like a third of the
33:00.0
audience is Filipino.
33:01.0
And by the last episode,
33:02.0
there's like half of them.
33:04.0
And you didn't know
33:05.0
that the Filipinos
33:06.0
were loyal to their kind.
33:07.0
I didn't realize that like,
33:08.0
that they were like,
33:09.0
that loyal, loyal.
33:14.0
because at first,
33:15.0
it's just our families,
33:18.0
hey, Filipinos in the corner,
33:19.0
thank you guys for being here.
33:20.0
But the word got out
33:24.0
like their artists
33:26.0
however they can.
33:27.0
And they'll come out
33:28.0
and just be amazing
33:31.0
you even see that with like,
33:33.0
The most intense fans
33:36.0
if they're founding you
33:38.0
they will always support you.
33:41.0
because of Arnel Pineda,
33:44.0
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
33:46.0
they're all brown.
33:49.0
How about the Jabbawockeez?
33:50.0
You guys are close with them though.
33:53.0
if you guys could do a show together.
33:58.0
We used to do a lot of stuff
33:59.0
with World of Dance
34:00.0
and we've met a couple
34:01.0
of the other dance crews
34:02.0
and saw a bunch of Filipinos
34:04.0
Do you guys dance?
34:08.0
we had the choreographer
34:09.0
for Magic Mike, right?
34:10.0
And I was telling her,
34:12.0
I can't body roll.
34:13.0
Can you please teach me
34:14.0
how to body roll?
34:15.0
It took her like three weeks
34:16.0
and then I finally got
34:22.0
I still can't body roll.
34:24.0
So about Pitch Perfect 2,
34:27.0
how did you get the call
34:28.0
to be part of it?
34:29.0
Did you guys have to audition
34:30.0
or was a part made
34:31.0
for the Philharmonics?
34:34.0
from the producer
34:35.0
and it was the same producer
34:37.0
we were on originally.
34:38.0
So he called me up.
34:40.0
we're looking for
34:43.0
we can't find a Korean group.
34:44.0
So the next best thing,
34:46.0
can you guys do it?
34:50.0
can you guys do it?
34:54.0
So we just listened
34:55.0
to different K-pop tracks
34:57.0
and different P-pop tracks
34:58.0
and we were like,
34:59.0
how can we make this
35:00.0
like what they're looking for?
35:02.0
they wanted a Korean group
35:04.0
we just put them together.
35:05.0
We copied exactly
35:07.0
style of arrangement
35:12.0
Go Goddamn Style.
35:13.0
Because it was in 2014.
35:17.0
and they loved it.
35:20.0
was just in a quick little recording
35:22.0
and we got on immediately.
35:25.0
within a couple months.
35:27.0
all these boy bands
35:28.0
like BTS from Korea,
35:31.0
and then you have
35:32.0
SB19 from the Philippines.
35:35.0
Are you guys excited
35:40.0
they're doing this.
35:41.0
We're still a cappella.
35:42.0
Do we incorporate
35:43.0
drum loops or loops?
35:47.0
the success of anyone,
35:52.0
and all those groups.
35:53.0
It's so cool to see
35:54.0
P-POP on the rise,
35:57.0
we are focused now
36:01.0
kind of band together.
36:02.0
Can we do something
36:03.0
with their music?
36:07.0
just excitement about
36:10.0
which is really cool.
36:11.0
Are you gonna limit yourself
36:12.0
to just being a cappella
36:13.0
or are you gonna incorporate
36:17.0
That's tough to say.
36:19.0
We like to incorporate
36:21.0
tracks that help,
36:22.0
I mean like instruments
36:23.0
that help kind of raise
36:24.0
everything we do,
36:28.0
So I think that's our
36:29.0
next journey is how can we
36:30.0
incorporate different instruments
36:31.0
but still keep the essence
36:33.0
of like a singing group.
36:34.0
You know what I'm thinking
36:36.0
off the top of my head
36:37.0
while talking to you?
36:38.0
I'm thinking of writing a song
36:40.0
wherein I really play drums
36:41.0
and you play bass
36:44.0
Yeah, that'd be cool.
36:45.0
Dude, that would be
36:46.0
Yeah, that'd be sick.
36:49.0
That would be nice.
36:59.0
let's not get serious
37:00.0
but there are kids
37:03.0
Like what we talked about,
37:07.0
can change the course
37:11.0
and all that, right?
37:12.0
Having known this,
37:15.0
what advice can you give
37:20.0
for their children
37:25.0
being a child these days
37:27.0
because there's so many
37:30.0
So I think the best way
37:31.0
you can support them is
37:33.0
guiding their energy
37:34.0
towards a passion
37:44.0
just to help support
37:45.0
however they can do it
37:47.0
it's so easy for a child
37:48.0
to just be at home
37:49.0
and not think about
37:53.0
I think one of the reasons
37:54.0
that a lot of us end up
37:55.0
being good at something
37:56.0
is because we just
37:57.0
loved it as a kid
37:58.0
and we were like,
38:00.0
let's just keep doing it
38:01.0
and all of a sudden
38:02.0
all of their time
38:04.0
because they developed it.
38:06.0
I think it's just
38:07.0
finding out what they like,
38:08.0
help them find it
38:09.0
and then support it
38:11.0
or whatever resources
38:13.0
Everything for me.
38:14.0
You know what you said,
38:15.0
what you just said
38:18.0
I guess the challenge
38:19.0
for parents is finding
38:21.0
is actually going
38:22.0
because every child
38:24.0
How are they spending
38:29.0
is to capture that,
38:30.0
the essence of that energy
38:31.0
and help the child
38:33.0
like what you said.
38:36.0
I don't even know
38:40.0
but I don't have children.
38:43.0
you have to find out
38:44.0
what their passion is
38:51.0
who are introverts
38:52.0
like you ask them
38:53.0
and they say nothing
38:54.0
and then you see them
39:01.0
how do I encourage
39:05.0
without me trying
39:06.0
to get in the way
39:08.0
how kids are, right?
39:09.0
If that kid's an introvert
39:15.0
How do you feed that
39:21.0
is brought to you
39:22.0
by Dr. Lourdes Capulong.
39:23.0
Especially if the child
39:26.0
you like me doing this?
39:28.0
I ain't doing this.
39:29.0
That is so tough.
39:32.0
that's an interesting point
39:34.0
you just gotta find a way, man.
39:38.0
you just gotta find a way, man.
39:41.0
How about for the child?
39:42.0
Like for the child
39:44.0
because they've been
39:52.0
What advice can you give
39:58.0
There are some things
39:59.0
that are comforting.
40:04.0
finding good examples
40:06.0
can do what they can do
40:07.0
and like, you know,
40:08.0
kind of role models
40:10.0
So, I think seeing
40:11.0
some of my friends
40:12.0
excel or some of my family
40:15.0
that's really interesting.
40:17.0
But I think something else
40:18.0
that is helpful is
40:23.0
just realizing that you,
40:25.0
there are opportunities
40:27.0
to change your mind.
40:31.0
it was thinking like,
40:32.0
I can do this but
40:33.0
if it's not working out,
40:34.0
why can't I just change my,
40:35.0
I can change my mind tomorrow.
40:36.0
If I want to do something
40:40.0
There's so much time.
40:41.0
So, I think that was
40:42.0
a problem for me.
40:44.0
oh man, if I do this,
40:45.0
I'm not going to be stuck
40:47.0
I'm like, no, no.
40:48.0
Every day is a chance
40:49.0
to do something new.
40:51.0
Every day is a chance
40:52.0
to do something new.
40:54.0
That's how I felt.
40:56.0
if this doesn't work out,
40:58.0
something else tomorrow?
41:00.0
to do the practical thing
41:01.0
eventually if you feel
41:02.0
like you want to.
41:03.0
No shame in that either.
41:04.0
But if you love something,
41:05.0
just keep trying it
41:06.0
until you feel like
41:07.0
it doesn't work out for you.
41:09.0
Is tomorrow today
41:13.0
Is tomorrow today?
41:23.0
Your bandmates are watching.
41:28.0
Here's the thing.
41:30.0
I will keep singing
41:31.0
and I will keep being
41:32.0
a singer my entire life,
41:33.0
but I have started
41:37.0
I've been producing TV shows.
41:40.0
I've been writing
41:41.0
a little bit more.
41:44.0
it's on its way someday.
41:46.0
Ladies and gentlemen,
42:04.0
Thank you for watching!
