COVID-19
00:53.8
The greatest disruptor of all time
00:55.8
is actually COVID-19.
00:57.8
Because of limited mobility, people are also not
00:59.8
being able to go to physical branches,
01:01.8
etc. It further accelerated
01:03.8
the adoption of
01:05.8
consumers of digital
01:07.8
channels.
01:09.8
We are now being able to provide
01:11.8
the services
01:13.8
needed by our citizens,
01:15.8
our consumers.

Mobility will be key
02:31.8
to recovery because we
02:33.8
have relaxed some of our
02:35.8
quarantine methods
02:37.8
and we have allowed more
02:39.8
transportation to come out.
02:41.8
That's going to prove to be
02:43.8
better for demand. If we do follow
02:45.8
the health protocols, the ability
02:47.8
of people to move around will likely
02:49.8
contribute better to growth.

04:36.0
Welcome to the program.
04:38.0
We begin in the Philippine province of Albay
04:40.0
where a state of calamity declaration is expected
04:44.0
due to the Mayon Volcano's unrest.
04:46.0
Thousands of families have so far been evacuated
04:50.0
as the volcano continues to rumble.
04:53.0
More evacuations are expected in the coming days.
04:60.0
At present, there have been 1,000 evacuees
05:04.0
coming from the municipality of Kamalig
05:08.0
and 2,000 families were evacuated
05:12.0
from the municipality of Ginubatan.
05:16.0
This roughly translates to 12,000 individuals.
05:20.0
Most of those living within the 6-kilometer radius
05:24.0
or danger zone are farmers.
05:27.0
As farmers, they have livestock like pigs,
05:31.0
goats, even carabaos and cows.
05:35.0
So the province now has an evacuation site
05:39.0
for their livestock so that it would be easier
05:42.0
for them to comply with the evacuation
05:45.0
knowing that their source of livelihood will be protected.
05:51.0
Albay Governor Gregg Slagman adds
05:54.0
they're in coordination with the national government
05:57.0
for assistance to displaced families.
06:01.0
Only three days ago, DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian
06:06.0
has committed to actually deliver 102,000 family food packs
06:12.0
for the evacuees.
06:14.0
At present, we have around 30,000 food packs already
06:17.0
in our three warehouses.
06:19.0
Tomorrow, Secretary Gatchalian will be meeting with me
06:23.0
together with all the affected LGU mayors.
06:30.0
The evacuations come after lava flow
06:33.0
was seen on the Mayon Volcano Thursday night.
06:36.0
The volcano's alert level was earlier raised to three,
06:40.0
signaling an increased likelihood of a hazardous eruption.
06:44.0
State volcanologists say Mayon Volcano
06:47.0
is already ripe for another eruption this year.
06:51.0
But they still hope the imminent eruption
06:54.0
will still change its course.
06:57.0
The difference right now is that we don't see
06:60.0
a high amount of sulfur dioxide.
07:02.0
So we are actually hoping for a 2014 scenario,
07:05.0
which is just rockfall events,
07:07.0
followed by a short lava flow, and then it's stopped.
07:11.0
Hopefully, it will not go the way of the 2018 activity.
07:15.0
The magma is being replenished,
07:17.0
and Mayon Volcano is actually,
07:19.0
the earliest would be three years after the last eruption,
07:24.0
and the latest would be 10 years after the last eruption.
07:28.0
So the last time it erupted was 2018,
07:31.0
and it's been five years now.
07:33.0
So again, we're on the range.
07:38.0
PHIVOLCS, meanwhile, appeals for calm
07:40.0
as three volcanoes simultaneously show signs
07:43.0
of increased activity.
07:45.0
Aside from Mayon, Taal and Mt. Canlaon
07:47.0
are both placed under alert level one.
07:50.0
But PHIVOLCS says the scenario is not out of the ordinary.
07:54.0
The public, though, is still advised to remain vigilant,
07:58.0
and he calls for evacuation.
08:03.0
We have 24 active volcanoes,
08:04.0
and there's always this possibility that, you know,
08:07.0
one or two volcanoes would be restive
08:10.0
and would show some activity simultaneously.
08:15.0
So this is not surprising.
08:17.0
On volcano, again, as I've said,
08:20.0
it has always been active on alert level one since 2020,
08:24.0
and yesterday, we only record one low-frequency
08:27.0
volcanic earthquake,
08:29.0
which is lower than the nine volcanic earthquakes
08:33.0
that we saw the day before.
08:38.0
Overseas, hundreds of wildfires are still burning in Canada.
08:42.0
Authorities say there are over 400 active wildfires
08:46.0
as of Thursday, mostly in Quebec,
08:49.0
where temperatures are expected to rise further.
08:53.0
There have been no reports of injuries or deaths so far.
08:57.0
But it remains unclear when thousands of evacuees
08:60.0
can return to their homes.
09:02.0
The assorted conditions also prompted Canadians
09:05.0
to begin wearing masks again
09:07.0
as they see the worst ever start to the wildfire season.
09:12.0
I think I believe in following public health guidelines,
09:16.0
and if that's what you need to do to stay safe
09:19.0
and keep other people safe, then I'm all for it.
09:22.0
It's really not...
09:24.0
We're not headed in a good direction with climate change
09:27.0
and why there are forest fires to begin with
09:30.0
because they shouldn't happen this early in the summer at least.
09:33.0
Like, now I'm wondering what's gonna happen
09:35.0
as we head more into July and August
09:39.0
because it's just gonna keep getting hotter
09:41.0
so are the fires gonna keep getting worse?
09:46.0
The U.S. meanwhile continues to send much needed help
09:50.0
for Canada's wildfire response.
09:52.0
U.S. President Joe Biden has directed American agencies
09:56.0
to respond promptly to Canada's request
09:59.0
for more firefighters and air tankers.
10:02.0
The U.S. has so far deployed 600 American firefighters to Canada.
10:09.0
I spoke yesterday with Prime Minister Trudeau
10:13.0
and I've decided to dictate
10:17.0
a national interagency fire center response
10:21.0
to Canada's request for additional firefighters
10:24.0
and the fire suppression assets such as air tankers.
10:29.0
We already have 600 American firefighters on the ground
10:33.0
and have been there for a while in Canada,
10:36.0
including hotshots and the smoke jumper crews.
10:39.0
And it's very important that affected communities
10:42.0
listen to the guidance of their state and local officials
10:46.0
from this point forward.
10:48.0
To keep up to date on the air quality in real time,
10:51.0
go to the app that we provide.
10:53.0
It's called airnow.gov.
10:57.0
And check on one another.
11:02.0
Heavy smoke from Canadian wildfires
11:04.0
continue to choke U.S. cities,
11:06.0
halting flights and disrupting outdoor events.
11:10.0
In Washington, the air quality alert
11:12.0
was raised to code maroon,
11:14.0
the highest category signaling hazardous conditions.
11:18.0
This prompted the White House to postpone an outdoor pride event.
11:22.0
A Major League Baseball game in the afternoon
11:25.0
was also paused due to the noxious heavy smoke.
11:28.0
In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul reminds residents
11:31.0
not to be complacent
11:33.0
as air quality levels continue to post unprecedented numbers.
11:40.0
The message is this is not over.
11:42.0
We might get a little respite,
11:44.0
but I don't want people to let down their guard
11:46.0
and to become complacent about this
11:48.0
because we have to be prepared for the winds to shift.
11:51.0
This is the unknown.
11:53.0
We're tracking the large plume
11:55.0
that is originating from primarily Nova Scotia
11:58.0
and also Quebec,
11:60.0
but also knowing that this is going to continue
12:02.0
to have a negative impact on our health.
12:07.0
Scientists from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
12:11.0
says the El Niño phenomenon has begun.
12:15.0
They warn the climate phenomenon can cause a range of impact
12:19.0
from heavy rainfall, drought, up to extreme temperatures.
12:23.0
Climate change also seems to exacerbate the effects of El Niño.
12:28.0
Most of the warmest years on record have occurred
12:31.0
during periods of El Niño,
12:33.0
and scientists fear this year and the next
12:37.0
could see record temperatures.
12:39.0
Here in the Philippines, forecasters say
12:41.0
El Niño may impact Mindanao the most
12:44.0
with its effects expected to be felt until next year.
12:51.0
As El Niño arrives,
12:52.0
Malacanang orders state agencies to conserve water.
12:56.0
The order requires all government agencies
12:58.0
to reduce their water consumption by 10%.
13:02.0
The new Water Management Office will spearhead
13:04.0
the implementation of the Water Conservation Program.
13:08.0
Local water districts must also submit a monthly projection
13:12.0
to identify any possible water shortages.
13:19.0
An update now on Typhoon Chedding.
13:21.0
It has maintained strength as it moves over the Philippine Sea.
13:25.0
Chedding was last spotted 920 kilometers east of Northern Luzon,
13:29.0
packing maximum winds of 130 kilometers per hour
13:33.0
and gustiness of up to 160 kilometers per hour.
13:37.0
State Weather Bureau, Pagasa, says
13:39.0
the typhoon will not directly impact the country's weather.
13:43.0
But it may continue to enhance the southwest monsoon
13:46.0
and bring rains across the Philippines.
13:49.0
Chedding is expected to pick up speed Saturday
13:52.0
and leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Monday morning.

Power is back up at the Terminal 3
15:08.0
of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport
15:11.0
following yet another outage earlier this afternoon.
15:14.0
Let's hear more details from ABS-CBN's Jackie Manabat.
15:17.0
Jackie?
15:19.0
Denise, the power is back after more than 30 minutes
15:22.0
here at the NIA Terminal 3.
15:24.0
We have yet to get word from the management of the NIA
15:26.0
on why there was a power outage.
15:29.0
According to the initial information
15:31.0
from the Department of Transportation,
15:34.0
power was out at 12.15 in the afternoon
15:37.0
and at 12.30 the terminal is powered by a generator until now.
15:42.0
The operation of NIA was affected
15:45.0
from the check-in counters up to the terminal ramp.
15:48.0
We saw passengers filing up at the immigration counter,
15:51.0
people fanning themselves
15:53.0
because the temperature inside the terminal is getting warm
15:56.0
and we were able to talk to some of the passengers
15:59.0
saying they were worried that their flights might be delayed
16:02.0
or canceled because of the power outage.
16:04.0
Denise, this is not the first time
16:06.0
that a power outage happened here at NIA Terminal 3.
16:09.0
Last May 1, 2023, it was Labor Day,
16:13.0
Terminal 3 experienced an eight-hour power interruption
16:16.0
falling around 9,000 passengers.
16:19.0
The Terminal 3 also relied on its power generators
16:22.0
which according to the management
16:24.0
could only handle 30% of the terminal's functions.
16:28.0
They also said that they have been working
16:30.0
on addressing the power issue since last year.
16:33.0
NIA management earlier mentioned
16:35.0
that over 100 million pesos have been awarded
16:38.0
to different contractors for upgrades
16:41.0
like replacing power cables and circuit breakers
16:44.0
for a more reliable electrical system.
16:48.0
As we speak, the power is back here at NIA Terminal 3
16:53.0
but it is still relying on power generators
16:56.0
and we will give more information
16:59.0
as we get more details from the management of NIA
17:03.0
or the Manila International Airport Authority
17:05.0
on why there was a power outage here at the terminal.
17:09.0
Back to you, Denise.
17:11.0
Thanks for the update, Jackie.
17:13.0
Over now to the Philippine labor market.
17:15.0
The country's unemployment rate eased to 4.5% in April
17:19.0
from 4.7% in March.
17:22.0
This translates to 2.26 million jobless Filipinos
17:26.0
compared with the 2.42 million the previous month.
17:30.0
The National Economic and Development Authority
17:32.0
vows to sustain the improvements in the labor market
17:35.0
by implementing crucial economic reforms
17:38.0
that will also enhance the employability of workers.
17:41.0
The statement comes as the underemployment rate in April
17:45.0
rose to 12.9% from 11.2% in March.
17:50.0
This means more Filipinos are seeking to work for longer hours.
17:58.0
The driver's license backlog in the Philippines
17:60.0
has ballooned to nearly 700,000.
18:03.0
That's almost triple than the 234,000 backlog in May.
18:08.0
The Land Transportation Office resorted to
18:10.0
issuing driver's license printed on paper.
18:14.0
It also extended the validity of licenses that expired in April.
18:18.0
Senators hit the agency over the issue.
18:24.0
We all know that digitalization is the future of government transactions.
18:30.0
But the digitalization of the LTO is still a problem
18:34.0
like the backlog in vehicle plates and license cards,
18:38.0
slow and unserviceable portals, long queues,
18:42.0
and long turnover of services.
18:44.0
The LTO digitalization plan is still chaotic.
18:48.0
The computer software is still in the beta phase.
18:54.0
The Transportation Department assures the public
18:57.0
that the shortage will soon be addressed
18:59.0
as it eyes the procurement of at least 500,000 driver's licenses.
19:06.0
We're taking a quick break.
19:07.0
Coming up, former U.S. President Donald Trump
19:10.0
indicted yet again, this time in a classified documents case.
19:14.0
More on that when we come back.

24:53.0
Steve Angeles tells us more.
24:57.0
Back to the practice course for film.
24:59.0
Head coach Eric Spolstra and the Miami Heat
25:01.0
on Thursday morning after suffering a 109-94
25:04.0
Game 3 defeat to the Denver Nuggets
25:06.0
in the NBA Finals on Wednesday night.
25:09.0
Spolstra says despite the two games to one deficit,
25:11.0
the Heat's competitive spirit remains strong.
25:14.0
Yeah, like a lot of these games,
25:16.0
there are certain things that you like
25:18.0
and you think that you can continue to do those things.
25:22.0
I liked our aggressive attacking mentality.
25:26.0
And then there's things that, you know,
25:28.0
we feel like we have to do better.
25:31.0
And this is great competition.
25:33.0
You know, those two guys can manipulate your defense
25:37.0
in different ways.
25:38.0
And one of the biggest strengths we have
25:40.0
is our competitive spirit, nature,
25:43.0
you know, just to overcome whatever.
25:46.0
Even if players play well or a team plays well,
25:49.0
that we figure out how to get the win at the end.
25:51.0
We were not able to do that.
25:52.0
You do have to credit them.
25:53.0
One big question mark for the Miami Heat
25:55.0
is their 2022 6th Man of the Year Tyler Hero
25:58.0
who has been injured for most of the playoff run.
25:60.0
Hero has been participating in practices
26:02.0
throughout the finals.
26:05.0
Yeah, this is just part of the process.
26:07.0
You know, you have to go through stages.
26:10.0
First part of it was just shooting,
26:12.0
then movement, then contact versus coaches,
26:16.0
and then the next level of contact in practice.
26:20.0
He has not been cleared for a game.
26:22.0
And he's still not cleared yet.
26:24.0
Now with a home court advantage,
26:26.0
the Nuggets are focusing on the Series one game at a time
26:28.0
and are looking to continue correcting
26:30.0
some of their mistakes from Game 3.
26:32.0
We're addressing all the areas where we have to be better.
26:35.0
Too many turnovers, too many offensive rebounds.
26:39.0
And so, yeah, it was nothing celebrating
26:43.0
the great nights that Nicole and Jamal had.
26:45.0
More importantly, it's about how can we find a way
26:47.0
to come out tomorrow night and get another one
26:50.0
here in Miami heading home to Denver for Game 5.
26:53.0
We go into every game trying to win.
26:55.0
We try to win every game.
26:56.0
Home or away, we try to win every game.
26:58.0
We don't plan on losing the game.
27:01.0
So whether home or away, we're trying to win
27:04.0
and just kind of react off that.
27:06.0
Game 4 will tip off on Friday night in Miami
27:09.0
and returns to Denver on Monday for Game 5.
27:12.0
Steve Angeles, ABS-CBN News.
27:16.0
Switching gears now, a new addition to the Transformers franchise
27:20.0
and the final installment of a popular comedy-drama series
27:24.0
are some of the latest releases in theaters and on streaming.
27:29.0
Our resident movie critic, Manny the Movie Guy, gives us a look.
27:42.0
The seventh movie in the Transformers franchise
27:45.0
has come out of the dark and is ready to give you
27:47.0
pretty much more of the same.
27:52.0
Set in 1994, shortly after the last film, Bumblebee,
27:56.0
we meet Noah, played by Anthony Reinditz,
27:58.0
an ex-military electronics expert failing at every turn
28:02.0
until he meets Mirage, voiced by Pete Davidson.
28:08.0
The big bad this time is Unicron,
28:10.0
a planet-eating dark god and his minions, the Terrorcons,
28:14.0
headed by Scourge, voiced by Peter Dinklage.
28:18.0
Helping the good guys, the Autobots, win are the Maximals,
28:22.0
an advanced race of beast robots.
28:26.0
This two-hour toy commercial is a little better
28:29.0
than all the other Transformers movies,
28:31.0
but that's not saying much.
28:33.0
Director Stephen Caple Jr. tries to inject some heart to the story,
28:37.0
at least.
28:40.0
The best part about the film?
28:42.0
It's relatively short compared to the other Transformers movies.
28:45.0
The first half is good,
28:47.0
and then it gets a little boring in the middle,
28:49.0
but then there's some surprises in the end,
28:51.0
including a mid-credits scene.
28:55.0
And for that, Transformers Rise of the Beast
28:58.0
gets two and a half out of four,
28:60.0
more than meets the eye, kisses.
29:03.0
If you want to see a series that's funny and sad
29:06.0
and gives you all the feels,
29:08.0
there's the fourth and final season of Netflix's Never Have I Ever.
29:14.0
The brainchild of Mindy Kaling,
29:16.0
this coming-of-age comedy-drama continues to be sharp and witty,
29:20.0
but also very honest, complete with a perfect ensemble,
29:23.0
headed by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Devi,
29:26.0
a high school senior at a crossroads.
29:29.0
I knew our show would be a hit,
29:31.0
I knew it would be definitely well-loved,
29:33.0
but it's wild.
29:35.0
Say goodbye to Never Have I Ever,
29:37.0
but like high school, it's quite unforgettable.
29:43.0
And for that Never Have I Ever,
29:45.0
season four gets three and a half out of four,
29:48.0
always and forever, kisses.
29:50.0
Kisses.
29:51.0
Manny, the movie guy for aliens.
29:58.0
And before we go,
29:59.0
the OB Ranger Project of ABS-CBN News
30:02.0
bags the Broadcast Innovation Trophy
30:05.0
at the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Awards in Singapore.
30:09.0
The OB Ranger Project stemmed from the challenges
30:12.0
faced by ABS-CBN News
30:14.0
following the non-renewal of its franchise.
30:17.0
Also recognized in the awards is ABS-CBN Global,
30:21.0
which nabbed the Excellence Award for OTT Platform
30:25.0
for its live streaming app, I Want TFC.
30:28.0
ABS-CBN's Big Dipper also earned the Innovation Award
30:31.0
for Audio Description,
30:33.0
providing an inclusive viewing experience
30:35.0
for hearing-impaired audiences.
30:41.0
And that's the rundown.
30:42.0
I'm Denise Dinsay.
