S.M.N.I. Truth That Matters
00:06.0
Welcome back to Business and Politics. We're talking to Dr. Cecilio Pedro of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce.
00:13.0
Sir, no big surprise on the things that you mentioned.
00:19.0
The question is, do you think the Marcos government, which is now scheduled to give a second State of the Nation address,
00:29.0
do you think they are working fast enough to address this? Are you happy?
00:34.0
And what do you think needs more attention from the administration at this point?
00:41.0
I believe we are in the process of moving forward because our beloved president spoke about focusing on digitalization.
00:55.0
We have to find ourselves competitive with the rest of the world.
01:02.0
First and foremost, we have to focus on what we want to attain in the next four years, five years, or perhaps longer than that.
01:16.0
The president is only given six years, and so he had one year spent already.
01:23.0
The remaining five years should be focused on what he or the other cabinet members can achieve within the span of five years.
01:33.0
It's just five years.
01:35.0
Are you happy with the direction that we're headed now?
01:38.0
Since we're talking about digitalization and the president apparently is very focused on digitalization,
01:47.0
I think we are in the right direction. We're moving forward towards the right direction.
01:52.0
The other area is, he mentioned also agriculture, which is also being given priority.
02:00.0
We might have to change some of the laws or the rules of the country. Land reform should be reformed.
02:10.0
We need big tracts of land for agriculture. We cannot lower the cost.
02:20.0
We need economics of scale. We need big area. We need to mechanize. We need to bring investment into agriculture.
02:28.0
If we rely on the poor farmers, they will stay poor forever because they don't have the means and the cost is always very high.
02:35.0
It's cheaper for us to import rather than to support these farmers.
02:39.0
These are things we are focusing on. I think the president knows what is needed to be moving forward towards this direction.
02:49.0
And of course, we're also talking about many other things, our relationships with our neighbors, with the ASEAN, and even with China and the rest of the world.
02:59.0
All of these are taken into context. That's why the president's work is difficult.
03:04.0
Now, what are the areas? Immediate attention will be probably the ease of doing business for businessmen.
03:12.0
Make it available, make it easy, make it competitive with our neighbors.
03:18.0
Vietnam is very aggressive. Indonesia is now doing the likewise. You talk to only two or three people and they will arrange everything.
03:28.0
You don't have to do anything. Just wait for the permit to come out.
03:32.0
These are things we have to stay focused on because investment is the key for job generation.
03:41.0
Of course, we like lesser competition, but that will not help the economy. That will not help the country.
03:49.0
So, we should allow big business to come in and invest and generate jobs.
03:53.0
And this is a golden opportunity because of the strife or the problem between China and the U.S.
04:01.0
Ang daming factories from China, they're moving out. They're locating in Vietnam, Indonesia. Why not locate in the Philippines?
04:10.0
But why not, sir? What have you been hearing? What are the main reasons?
04:13.0
I just mentioned all of those things. The ease of doing business, energy, the focus, the internet.
04:23.0
Sure, yeah.
04:28.0
Let's improve our internet. Let's make it as good as our neighbors in Thailand or maybe in Vietnam and Indonesia.
04:36.0
They're moving forward. So, all of these elements are needed for us to move forward, for us to be competitive, and for us to generate jobs.
04:45.0
Ang dami pong nawawala ng trabaho, ang dami pong walang trabaho, or ang dami pong underemployed.
04:52.0
Sure.
04:53.0
Bakit? Kasi kulang ang job opportunities.
04:56.0
Yeah.
04:57.0
Now, how do we do that? Investment, investment. China is looking for possibilities.
05:03.0
So, they will transfer their factory, transfer their technology, and export to the world. Grab these opportunities.
05:11.0
Sayang pag mawala pa itong opportunity.
05:14.0
All right. Sir, just go back a little bit to farming.
05:19.0
It seems to me, my impression, sir, that your heart is also into it because that's, as you said, what you did for relaxation and going to livestock farm.
05:27.0
How can we convince more people? What kind of help does the government need to provide to encourage more people to go into that business?
05:38.0
You mentioned the limitation on land ownership. Is there something else that can be done to maybe encourage more people to go into agriculture and make it more productive?
05:50.0
Productivity is highly dependent nowadays on technology.
05:56.0
I see. So, we're going back to AI and digitalization.
06:00.0
It's a whole package. It's a whole package. And support from government in terms of ease of doing business.
06:07.0
Pabalik-balik, I talk about this many times. It has to come from the people in government.
06:15.0
Kailangan makita natin yung tulong na may bigay natin para umunlat naman ang bayan natin.
06:21.0
Para may mas maraming tao makakaroon ng trabaho.
06:24.0
Relying on the farmers to produce enough food for us is traditional style, old style.
06:30.0
Hindi na pupwede yun. Hindi na pupwede.
06:33.0
They are now mechanized. So, they can produce much better crops, better monitored, and lower cost in a way that we cannot compete.
06:43.0
It's cheaper now to import. Lahat pwedeng import.
06:47.0
Pati yung manok, in-import na rin. Yung baboy, in-import. We used to export.
06:51.0
Rice is imported. Pati yung mga galunggong yada, imported na rin.
06:57.0
Pati yung mga sibuyas, in-import na rin. Why? Because they can produce it, 40 pesos.
07:03.0
Cost, 60 pesos, 80 pesos. So, how can you compete?
07:10.0
The key is productivity, and the key is technology, and the government comes stepping in to help.
07:18.0
Well, you had some experience. You were, I think, propagating some native pigs or something like that.
07:27.0
But what would have been, I know that's for relaxation, but if you were to maybe view that as a business that you could scale like you did with Lemoyen,
07:39.0
what should be done? What kind of, I suppose, environment would help you, or people like you, pursue something like that?
07:48.0
Yeah, my intention was really to be parang a pilot, a demo farm.
07:52.0
Yes.
07:53.0
To come in with some technology and some hybrid pig or hybrid goats or hybrid whatever.
08:02.0
That's what you cross, yeah, okay.
08:03.0
Yeah, where we can breed animals and help our farmers.
08:08.0
That's so interesting.
08:09.0
Yeah, but to go large scale, iba yung large scale.
08:12.0
Yeah.
08:13.0
It's all, hindi na, it's no rocket science. Everybody knows how to do it.
08:18.0
Yeah.
08:19.0
So, putting all these elements together, and with enough support from the government, we can move forward much, much faster.
08:29.0
Most of the big business in many parts of the world, like in Thailand, is Sipi.
08:35.0
I saw Sipi. Sipi is coming in. Sipi is the name of the owner.
08:40.0
They're very high tech in food production for pigs, for chicken, for feed.
08:47.0
Integrated na sila.
08:49.0
From the breeding, to the feeds needed, to the technology, yung chicken production nila is multi-building na yan.
08:59.0
Building na sila, or vertical.
09:01.0
Tayo nasa ground floor, sila nasa 10 floors building, doing all of this at the same time.
09:08.0
So, the cost is much, much cheaper.
09:11.0
All of this is needed, including farming.
09:15.0
And I was so surprised that Thailand is now moving faster.
09:21.0
I was in the airport moving out.
09:24.0
Ang daming food, yung mga crackers, mga frozen fruit, and even dry fruits.
09:34.0
May manga, may papaya, may pineapple, may guayabano, may durian.
09:41.0
Lahat meron. Lahat ng pinuproduce dito ngayon, meron na sa kanila.
09:46.0
Pero mas maganda yun sa kanila because it's processed.
09:49.0
Nakapacked properly with a very bright packaging.
09:53.0
And everybody's buying.
09:54.0
Mapapabili kayo, kasi nakita mo maganda.
09:57.0
So, you pick up a little to bring home.
09:59.0
So, I was also looking at it, and I decided to buy a few packs to bring home to my wife.
10:06.0
It's a concerted effort on food production in Thailand.
10:13.0
They export rice, they export chicken, they export everything.
10:18.0
As you said, almost everything can be imported.
10:22.0
And sabi nyo nga, there are many products overseas that are better.
10:27.0
Is there some, we have to go to a quick break,
10:29.0
but is there a particular commodity or product that maybe we could concentrate on
10:35.0
and probably be better at than our neighbors?
10:40.0
There are two particular fruits that I'm looking at.
10:44.0
Mango. Lahat tayong galaban sa mango.
10:47.0
Hindi naman walang galaban, mayroon pa rin ng mango in Thailand.
10:50.0
We certainly have the advantage.
10:53.0
Our mangoes are the best in the world.
10:57.0
In terms of lasa, in terms of flavor, we have the best in the world.
11:02.0
But they're catching up. Pero walang, we're still leading.
11:06.0
Pag sinabi mo, Philippine mango, oh, everybody hands up.
11:09.0
The best in the world, Philippine mango.
11:12.0
We have another industry, which is durian.
11:15.0
Durian is something that is needed in China.
11:19.0
Sabi nyo nga, when we were with the president in China,
11:22.0
sabi nyo ng Chinese government,
11:24.0
you produce as much as you want and we'll buy everything durian.
11:29.0
Of course, there is pineapple, papaya, bananas, traditional na yan.
11:35.0
But these are expensive products.
11:38.0
You can charge a premium on durian.
11:40.0
You can charge a premium on Philippine mangoes.
11:43.0
Kilala yan eh.
11:45.0
So why not look into these possibilities?
11:48.0
In a big scale.
11:50.0
And when you talk of big scale, kailangan din ang tulong ng government.
11:53.0
Kailangan may, baka mahalaan, reform na naman yan.
11:57.0
Baka may...
11:58.0
Sayang.
11:59.0
Sayang eh.
12:00.0
To go into agri production, may time schedule yan eh.
12:07.0
You need some years.
12:09.0
It's not going to happen overnight.
12:11.0
And by the time you are already producing,
12:13.0
tapos sasabihin na yan, oh, ito hindi pwede, ito hindi pwede,
12:15.0
ito hindi pwede, ito kailangan namin, ito in DNR, hindi pwede, ito hindi pwede.
12:19.0
Wala na. Wala na.
12:21.0
Nobody is going to invest in the Philippines.
12:45.0
Thank you for watching!
