when they were starving

and ran out of provisions,

they sought the aid

from the Sultanate of Brunei

And they were allowed

by the Sultan of Brunei

to disembark

at one of Brunei's ports

where they were warmly welcomed

and fed by the locals

In other words,

the Spaniards

owed their survival

to the locals

and the benevolence

of the Sultan of Brunei

Now, Raja Aceh himself

was also no ordinary ruler

He was the future

King of Luzon

who was actually

on his way back home

to reclaim his rightful throne

Unknown to many

from the 1400s

to the 1500s,

the Kingdom of Luzon

held a prestigious position

in a vast,

vibrant,

and well-established

maritime trading network

that linked

Southeast Asia,

China,

Japan,

India,

the Arab world,

Africa,

and beyond

And during his lifetime,

Raja Aceh's people,

the Luzones,

were often mistaken

for Chinese traders

in other parts of the world

due to their lucrative monopoly

on the maritime trade with China

Because during the Ming Dynasty of China,

sea trade with the rest of the world

was officially banned

except for the Kingdom of Luzon

And their ships were a familiar sight

in the busting ports of China,

Japan,

and Southeast Asia

trading South African commodities

and forging diplomatic ties

Indeed,

Raja Aceh's own parents,

Raja Salalila of Luzon

and Dayang Ismeria of Brunei and Sulu

laid the foundations

not only of Manila's

pre-colonial walled city,

but perhaps more importantly,

they also laid the foundations

of a political system

that united

the once-rivaled royal houses

of Brunei,

Sulu,

and Luzon

ensuring that these paramount leaders

remained connected by blood

Tragically,

the untimely death

of Raja Salalila

marked a pivotal moment

in the unfolding of Raja Aceh's story

Dayang Ismeria,

the young widow and queen,

was now left

with the responsibility

of leading their realm

while preparing her young son,

Raja Aceh,

to ascend the throne,

an immense burden

for a grieving mother

Now on the other hand,

across the Pasig River,

Malangsik of Tondo,

the ambitious nephew

of Raja Salalila,

saw an opportunity

to consolidate his power

and secure his own election

as the paramount king of Luzon

In the face of adversity,

Raja Aceh sought the guidance

of his maternal grandfather,

Sultan Bolquilla of Brunei

The wise sultan

offered his support

to his beloved grandson,

sealing the bond

between Brunei and Luzon

Now eventually,

soon after his encounter

with the Spaniards in 1521,

Raja Aceh's determination

and courage

led to his victory

over his older cousin,

Malangsik of Tondo

and thus,

placing his younger brother,

Bunau,

as the new Lakandula of Tondo

and reclaiming

his own rightful place

as the Raja of Manila

and the paramount king of Luzon

to Raja Ache's captivity

in 1521

Raja Ache's charm

and resourcefulness

were said to have played

a pivotal role

in his eventual release

Now, rumor has it that

he even offered gold

to the Portuguese captain

João Lopes Carvalho

to secure his freedom

And you know,

it's fascinating to see

how diplomacy

and personal connections

played a significant role

in shaping

this historic encounter

In gratitude

to his grandfather

for their survival,

the Spaniards

treated the young prince

with kindness

and promptly returned

the treasures they had looted

Perhaps they were afraid

of retribution

from the mighty

Sultan of Brunei

who was then

the most powerful ruler

in maritime Southeast Asia

Nonetheless,

in a generous

act of goodwill,

the Prince of Luzon

presented the Spaniards

with a highly skilled pilot

and navigator

to aid them

through the waters

of Southeast Asia

on their journey

to the Moluccas,

the bustling source

of the much-coveted

spice trade

The expedition

accepted the gift

and proceeded

on their journey

with a newfound respect

for the Prince

So among the crew

of Raja Aceh

was a man

named Pasekulan

a former slave

hailing from the

bustling port city

of Makassar

in what is now

Indonesia

A man of remarkable talent,

Raja Aceh

granted him

the precious gift of freedom

And you know,

Pasekulan was not just

an ordinary crew member

He possessed brilliance

in navigation

and a mastery

of the Spanish language

And this remarkable combination

made him

an invaluable asset

to Raja Aceh

and his armada

And so,

it was that Pasekulan,

with his

Spanish-speaking abilities,

took on the critical task

of guiding the Magellan-Elcano expedition

through the treacherous waters

of Southeast Asia

As mentioned earlier,

the survivors

of the expedition

had constantly been lost at sea

and constantly

running out of provisions

It was Pasekulan's expertise

that would be

their lifeline

to survival

And through his guidance,

the Europeans

navigated the waters

of Southeast Asia

from the Sulu Sea

to the famed Spice Islands

and beyond

Indeed,

if we think about it,

the success

of the Magellan-Elcano expedition

and their voyage back

to Europe

owed a great deal

to the benevolence

of Raja Aceh of Luzon

and Sultan Molquilla of Brunei

And of course,

to the indispensable skills

of Pasekulan

It's astonishing to realize

that our ancestors

were anything but

isolated savages

The prominence of Luzon,

Sulu, and Butuan

and other

ancient Southeast Asian kingdoms

in the pre-colonial geopolitics

and global economy

is a testament

to the rich tapestry

of connections

that existed

in our islands

long before

the so-called

discovery

of the Philippines

In fact,

the presence

of a Spanish-speaking navigator

like Pasekulan

50 years

before the Spaniards

conquered Manila

along with

the ancient

flourishing trade networks

between Southeast Asian kingdoms

and beyond

highlight a reality

that challenges

colonial narratives

Our ancestors

were not just

passive observers

but in fact,

they were

active participants

in the global exchange

of cultures,

ideas,

and commodities

And so,

three years

after their departure,

only one

surviving ship

of the expedition,

the Victoria

finally returned

to Spain

in 1522

It was

a triumphant moment

The first

recorded

circumnavigation

of the globe

was complete

Now,

the journey may have ended

but the impact

of this epic encounter

and this epic expedition

would be felt

for generations to come

for centuries to come

Raja Aceh

would later be known

as Raja Matanda

aka

the wise

old king

Raja Matanda

continued to play

a crucial role

in the politics

of Southeast Asia

Indeed,

he ruled over

vast territories

and thriving

communities

But a shadow

loomed

over the horizon

50 years later,

as one of the last

paramount kings of Luzon,

Raja Matanda

along with his brother

Lakandula of Tondo

and his heir

and nephew

Raja Suleiman

the Raja Muda

of Manila

wielded

immense power

and influence

over the thriving

centers of wealth

and trade

in the pre-colonial Philippines

But,

contrary

to the colonial miseducation

of our people,

Raja Matanda

did not

surrender

the freedom

of Manila

and Luzon

quite easily

It was not

really true that

Raja Matanda

simply surrendered

the freedom

of our people

without a fight

Just because the Spaniards

had once

treated him

with kindness

While it was true that

he welcomed the arrival

of the Spaniards

in 1570

and that he was open

to friendly negotiations

with the conquistadors,

this was in reality

all part

of their diplomacy

This

is what they usually do

when foreigners

like the Spaniards

arrive

seeking friendship

and trade

in Manila Bay

In fact,

unknown to many,

the Spaniards promised

the kings in Manila

that they had no

intentions

of conquering Luzon

and that their only aim

was to peacefully settle

and be part

of the flourishing

international trade

in Manila Bay

But sadly,

these turned out to be

nothing

but false promises

and blatant lies

It was a treachery

that ended

with the tragic burning

of the ancient world city

of Manila

in 1570

and the final conquest

of Manila

by the Spaniards

in 1571

It marked

the end of an era

as the Spaniards

began to conquer

and pillage

the once prosperous

kingdoms

of Luzon

Now, it's important for us

to understand that

Raja Ache's

relationship with the Europeans

was not without

its complexities

As a ruler

with a lineage

deeply rooted

in Southeast Asian geopolitics

his motivations

were multifaceted

One can only imagine

the delicate balance

Raja Ache

or Raja Matanda

had to strike

as he navigated

through his own

historic encounters

with the Europeans

For while his aid

to the expedition

was a pragmatic measure

to ensure his own survival

and that of the Europeans

in 1521

and later

welcoming them

as diplomats

and traders

in 1570

he also had

his own ambitions

and more importantly

his own

responsibilities

as a paramount ruler

The alliances

between the kingdoms

in Southeast Asia

were intricate webs

of political

and economic relationships

Raja Ache's marriage

to a princess

from Brunei

and his role

as the prince

who later reigned

as the revered

Raja Matanda

the King of Luzon

carried immense significance

interweaving

the destinies

of Luzon

Brunei

Sulu

and the surrounding region

From the heights

of political power

to the depths

of maritime trade

the history

of our ancestors

had always been

intertwined

with the world's

great empires

and civilizations

For example

the Kingdom of Luzon

once held

a monopoly

of maritime trade

with China

a legacy

etched

in the annals

of history

a testament

to the forgotten

greatness of our past

Raja Ache's

encounter

with the Magellan

El Cano expedition

brought to light

the untold

pre-colonial

interconnectedness

of the world

and the undeniable

presence

of our ancestors

in the grand

tapestry of history

there's still so many things

that we need to learn

and unlearn

about our past

about our ancestors

and about

our own people

knowing our roots

does not

simply mean

a blind

nostalgic longing

for the glitz and glamour

of the past

while ignoring

the conditions

of the present

It means

being awakened

and immersed

in the realities

of today

armed

and empowered

with the wisdom

of our ancestors

It means

staying rooted

in our people's history

while addressing

our present-day struggles

and paving the path

towards

a brighter future

for our people
