00:35.0
Let's keep talking.
00:36.0
Kaibigan, tuloy ang usap.
00:47.0
Reb, maraming salamat for your time.
00:49.0
Maraming salamat.
00:50.0
I'm happy to see you.
00:51.0
Ako din.
00:52.0
I looked forward to this conversation.
00:54.0
Ang tagal na natin hindi nagkita ama.
00:56.0
Kaya ngayon, ang gagawin natin ay yung aming tinatawag na The What Interview.
01:01.0
Ay.
01:02.0
Lahat ng aming mga katanungan, except for the follow-ups, ay nagsisimula sa What.
01:06.0
Reb, what are you when you're alone?
01:09.0
I believe that when I commune with God, I need to be still and feel His presence.
01:19.0
I ask for quiet time.
01:22.0
It's very important for quiet time for me to get that inspiration.
01:29.0
You know, it's very hard to be a creative every day.
01:32.0
So sometimes you need to pause and think about what you're doing also.
01:39.0
What makes you happy, Reb?
01:41.0
My wife makes me happy.
01:43.0
Wonderful woman.
01:45.0
Yes, wonderful. Very strong.
01:49.0
My dog. I love my dog.
01:51.0
Pag nagpipinta ka, masaya ka?
01:53.0
You know, my experience in painting is sort of trance-like.
01:58.0
Especially when the music is on and I'm listening to it and I'm just lost in the colors.
02:04.0
I'm just lost in the aesthetics.
02:07.0
I'm lost in what I want to do.
02:11.0
And then biglang, oops, it's done. It's finished. What did I do?
02:16.0
Halimbawa, this powerful red painting.
02:20.0
What is the story?
02:21.0
The story is I was trying to paint colors from my series called Dreaming of H.R. Ocampo,
02:32.0
which were orange, yellow, Indian red.
02:37.0
So I tried that and then I saw it.
02:40.0
I saw the flowers and I decided to paint over it.
02:44.0
Red to me symbolizes many things, but first and foremost, it's the blood shed by Christ for me.
02:53.0
And love. Unconditional love.
02:55.0
That piece is interesting, Reb.
02:57.0
I was thinking of, you know, everybody has coy paintings.
03:02.0
And I was like, how can I do it in a minimal kind of way and have some movement in the work?
03:13.0
So the process was also printing, putting canvas face to face and sliding it.
03:22.0
I think the oriental feel of this painting was, I think I was successful in my eyes.
03:30.0
I think so.
03:31.0
Yeah.
03:32.0
I think so. This gave me the idea.
03:34.0
Okay.
03:35.0
This gave me particularly the idea.
03:36.0
Okay.
03:37.0
There's nothing to do with coy.
03:38.0
Okay.
03:39.0
But I wasn't sure about it until you said it.
03:41.0
Yes, yes, yes.
03:42.0
So I got that.
03:43.0
Yeah, yeah.
03:44.0
So I didn't want to make it a literal kind of, because, you know, in art, everything has been done.
03:52.0
Everything has been done.
03:53.0
Nothing is really new.
03:55.0
Nothing is really contemporary or, but it's the moment.
04:01.0
It's the time.
04:02.0
It's where you say, this is the time I felt this way.
04:08.0
This is the time I wanted to paint these images.
04:13.0
That makes it personal.
04:14.0
Yes, it makes it personal.
04:15.0
What happens when you paint something and when you look at it, you say, I'm not happy?
04:27.0
I rest.
04:28.0
I have to rest.
04:29.0
I have to have that clear mind to reach what I want.
04:35.0
So if it's ugly to me, I put it aside sometimes for years.
04:43.0
Then I go back to it.
04:45.0
And then I adorn it or I do something with it where I paint over it.
04:52.0
What do you know about love?
04:54.0
Nothing.
04:55.0
I learn every day.
04:58.0
I learn from the people, my friends.
05:01.0
I learn from my wife.
05:02.0
I learn from my family.
05:04.0
I learn from my mom.
05:06.0
My mom, the biggest influence in my life.
05:09.0
The beautiful divina.
05:10.0
The divine one.
05:11.0
The divine one.
05:12.0
And vis-a-vis my wife also.
05:14.0
My wife is responsible for what I am right now, from hitting rock bottom and where I am right now in my life.
05:26.0
What is life like without Vale?
05:29.0
I can't imagine life without her.
05:31.0
You know, my life's an open book.
05:36.0
People may have opinions.
05:39.0
We know how people talk about us.
05:42.0
We know how people can be judgmental.
05:45.0
But it's unconditional love.
05:48.0
It's friendship.
05:49.0
Do you care?
05:50.0
No.
05:51.0
Not at all.
05:52.0
But it had been a journey, Reb, because you were a child star and you are from a business where people care, are told to care, where people have to be approved.
06:03.0
So that journey from there to today, when you don't care, what has it been like?
06:14.0
Not caring.
06:15.0
I never did care anyway.
06:17.0
That's why I think...
06:18.0
Even if you were in the business of caring?
06:21.0
Yes.
06:22.0
Like, I think one of the things that got me, that there was a cabal, I think, against me or something, was because I had no filter.
06:34.0
I would say what I wanted to say then.
06:37.0
But, you know, being a depressive, I have mental illness.
06:41.0
I suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.
06:45.0
Here, they say it's bipolar, depressive.
06:48.0
Okay.
06:49.0
But I have an antidote.
06:51.0
I sleep.
06:53.0
And after I sleep for a few days, I'm back in the saddle again.
07:00.0
So I help myself.
07:03.0
So helping myself is not caring.
07:06.0
So what is your response to rejection today?
07:09.0
Oh, redirection.
07:11.0
It's just redirection.
07:13.0
You're rejected here.
07:14.0
Okay, I'm going here.
07:16.0
I just remember what Oprah said.
07:18.0
You know, when you're rejected, it's God's way of saying, not there, turn left and turn right.
07:23.0
Yes, yes.
07:24.0
You're probably destined to be there.
07:26.0
Exactly.
07:27.0
And especially when people now talk about respecting one's journey and loving one's destiny.
07:34.0
Yeah.
07:35.0
Reb, what hurts you?
07:37.0
Injustice, betrayal.
07:39.0
What can't you forget?
07:41.0
And what can't you forgive?
07:43.0
I can't forget the death of my Ninong, FPJ.
07:49.0
Tell us why.
07:51.0
Because he was like my father.
07:53.0
He treated me like his son.
07:54.0
I grew up making films with him.
07:58.0
He sent me to school, to the United States, when he knew that I wasn't really doing well.
08:05.0
He said, go to the States and study there.
08:07.0
What I can't forgive are those people right now in this space.
08:13.0
I don't want to say this person's name, but the disrespect, the utter disrespect and no facts.
08:22.0
Because I should have known.
08:24.0
I would have known.
08:25.0
It still triggers me.
08:26.0
And when you're triggered?
08:30.0
And when I'm triggered, I cry.
08:33.0
I dream about him a lot.
08:35.0
Reb, what is the best thing about you?
08:39.0
I'm a loving person.
08:41.0
I love unconditionally.
08:43.0
The biggest misconception about Duran Reb Daliasa, what is it?
08:48.0
I went crazy.
08:50.0
Yeah.
08:51.0
I'm still a drug addict.
08:55.0
27 years of debauchery and drug use.
09:00.0
Of course, I don't deny it.
09:03.0
But I've been 14 years sober.
09:06.0
Yeah.
09:07.0
So that's my past.
09:09.0
It's still the same.
09:12.0
What do you do?
09:13.0
Do you fight back?
09:14.0
Because it's tiring to be defensive about something that's as massive an accusation as you're crazy.
09:27.0
Sometimes it comes from the people closest to you.
09:30.0
But when you hear it from other people, like who don't know you from Adam.
09:35.0
It's different.
09:36.0
It's different.
09:37.0
It's different.
09:38.0
Like when you're eating in a restaurant and you're being accused.
09:42.0
That happens to you?
09:43.0
There are a lot of situations like that.
09:45.0
That you're the one being accused?
09:48.0
Exactly.
09:49.0
Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased and proud to introduce to you Send Wave.

10:15.0
Thank you very much.
10:17.0
Katulad noong time na nakablue akong sapatos.
10:21.0
10:40.0
Elvis yun, diba?
10:42.0
Napikon.
10:43.0
Gusto mo kay pagbugbugan?
10:44.0
Tara!
10:45.0
Wala nangyari, dito nangyari yun sa Tomas Moda to,
10:48.0
In a Japanese restaurant.
10:50.0
So ganoon, may mga taong ganoon eh.
10:54.0
I wanted to correct them.
10:56.0
I wanted to say, no, it's not like that.
11:00.0
You're wrong.
11:01.0
Yes.
11:02.0
But, will they listen?
11:06.0
What is fame to you?
11:08.0
Using your lens today.
11:11.0
It's a double-edged sword.
11:14.0
It can be toxic.
11:15.0
Very, very, very.
11:17.0
And it can, it's very bad for your ego and your id, you know?
11:23.0
Sometimes, you might believe what they write or say about you.
11:28.0
And I don't.
11:29.0
I really don't.
11:30.0
It's really fleeting.
11:32.0
This media campaign that we just did,
11:36.0
I'm so happy about it because
11:40.0
there's more interest.
11:42.0
Before, I had shows nobody would write about.
11:45.0
I would always, you know, just keep it low-key.
11:49.0
You know, I've been playing with the band Color It Red for about 20 years.
11:54.0
I'm a part, quasi-member of the band.
11:56.0
I play harmonica.
11:58.0
And I also sing backup for Cookie Chua.
12:01.0
There was one time I opened an exhibit and no one came.
12:06.0
And this was in Conspiracy Cafe.
12:10.0
And Cookie said,
12:12.0
Where are they?
12:14.0
Because they were so used to this big party,
12:17.0
this big party.
12:19.0
And I go, I don't know.
12:22.0
And then, two years later,
12:26.0
after four more exhibits,
12:28.0
they came.
12:30.0
And it was a drop of a key.
12:35.0
And I said, Cookie, they're back.
12:37.0
I don't know what happened.
12:39.0
Maybe God blessed me.
12:42.0
Maybe they saw the light that was coming out from me.
12:47.0
What are you first?
12:48.0
Are you a painter, actor, actor-painter?
12:51.0
I'm a painter.
12:54.0
But even as an actor, you are a painter.
12:56.0
Yeah, but like they say,
12:58.0
you can't use the word artist loosely
13:02.0
if you don't practice your vocation.
13:05.0
I practice. I paint every day.
13:07.0
So what do I call myself?
13:08.0
What will I box myself in?
13:11.0
I think I can call myself an artista.
13:15.0
And people forget that I'm a trained actor.
13:18.0
Yes.
13:19.0
I learned from the greats.
13:20.0
I worked with national artists,
13:22.0
directors, actors,
13:24.0
Eddie Romero, Ismael Bernal,
13:26.0
Fernando Po, Jr.
13:28.0
What is it about acting that you miss the most?
13:31.0
When I know that I've moved a person.
13:35.0
Like I did theater with Bart Gingon,
13:38.0
A Kiss of the Spider Woman, years ago.
13:41.0
That was immediate.
13:45.0
The feeling on stage
13:48.0
and audience giving you the love
13:52.0
or being entertained
13:54.0
or they're enjoying themselves.
13:56.0
That was one of the most, you know,
14:02.0
happiest, best time for me.
14:05.0
What matters the most to you now?
14:07.0
My health.
14:08.0
I think we all realize that.
14:10.0
Yeah, at a certain age,
14:11.0
especially I have a stent in my heart.
14:14.0
I've had heart problems.
14:19.0
I've been having hypotension.
14:21.0
It's scary. It's scary.
14:22.0
What is it like to be a child of God?
14:27.0
Oh.
14:30.0
See, that's it.
14:32.0
You close your eyes and you're just like.
14:36.0
You breathe.
14:38.0
You breathe and you feel the love.
14:41.0
That's it.
14:42.0
Yeah.
14:43.0
What is your family like?
14:46.0
We're crazy.
14:47.0
I love that. Crazy bunch.
14:48.0
Crazy bunch. We're a crazy bunch.
14:50.0
And we all accept that.
14:52.0
We all have our highs, our lows.
14:54.0
We endure all these challenges
14:56.0
that we are faced with
14:58.0
as a good, modern family
15:01.0
because my wife's ex-husband
15:04.0
is also my good friend.
15:06.0
And the kids are like my own kids.
15:09.0
So we're a modern, crazy family.
15:13.0
What is it that you don't have today
15:17.0
that you still want?
15:19.0
Not more money,
15:20.0
but just to be able for me
15:23.0
to pay for my health insurance every year
15:27.0
because I value my health
15:30.0
and that will continue my life.
15:33.0
You're not afraid of death?
15:36.0
The process, I'm afraid of.
15:39.0
But I've accepted the fact that it will happen.
15:42.0
I just pray every night that,
15:44.0
Lord, I just want to wake up tomorrow again
15:46.0
because it just feels like yesterday
15:49.0
that I was alive,
15:52.0
like when I was born.
15:54.0
So I'm 54,
15:57.0
but the way I think is like 17 or 21.
16:01.0
It's still like that.
16:03.0
What is the biggest dream
16:06.0
that remains unfulfilled?
16:09.0
Oh, to travel more.
16:11.0
To travel more.
16:12.0
I used to backpack my way through Europe
16:15.0
when I was 19, 20, 21.
16:18.0
I stopped traveling when I was like 35.
16:22.0
Inahabol ko ngayon yung experience.
16:25.0
What other human beings can teach me?
16:28.0
What culture can I get from?
16:32.0
Is there kindness in their culture?
16:34.0
Is there love?
16:35.0
And how do they love?
16:37.0
What is heaven to you?
16:39.0
I imagine heaven to be a place of love and light.
16:44.0
I don't know.
16:45.0
Heaven can be here.
16:47.0
Heaven is here.
16:48.0
It's just how you look at it.
16:51.0
It can be here
16:53.0
and the opposite of it.
16:56.0
What about hell?
16:58.0
I'm afraid of hell.
17:00.0
I always question myself.
17:03.0
Mabait ba akong tao?
17:06.0
Pag nakita ko ba si San Pedro,
17:09.0
titila ako ang kanyang mano ko?
17:11.0
Hindi ako papapasukin,
17:13.0
napapapasukin.
17:14.0
What is your love language?
17:16.0
Touch.
17:17.0
I cry when I tell people I love them.
17:21.0
Reb, what would you do if you were to die
17:25.0
right after this conversation?
17:28.0
I hope that I am welcomed by Jesus Christ
17:34.0
and embraced in His arms.
17:36.0
Yan lang.
17:37.0
Face to face with the great divine of God.
17:41.0
Wow.
17:42.0
What would you tell Him?
17:43.0
Am I worthy to be here?
17:46.0
To speak to you.
17:47.0
What would you write on your epitaph?
17:51.0
It's a Broadway play,
17:52.0
Here Lies Love.
17:54.0
Here Lies Love.
17:57.0
Last question.
17:58.0
I want to go back to the restaurant
18:00.0
where that man and his child.
18:03.0
And the wife.
18:04.0
And the wife,
18:05.0
looking at your blue pair of shoes.
18:08.0
Paul Smith.
18:09.0
And then, was it the child who asked
18:12.0
why he's wearing blue shoes?
18:15.0
And the father said,
18:17.0
because he's gay.
18:18.0
Yes.
18:19.0
To that man who said it,
18:21.0
what do you want to say?
18:23.0
Is that what you're teaching your son?
18:26.0
To ask and give the wrong answer?
18:33.0
That, I hope you look at me first
18:38.0
before you judge me.
18:41.0
Thank you, Reb.
18:42.0
Thank you.
18:43.0
I love you, Father.
18:44.0
I love you so much.
