Welcome to Captivating Kastorya!
01:06.1
Hey there, poor traveler!
01:07.3
We are Vins and Yosh.
01:08.8
We didn't expect we'd get to see Kastorya
01:10.8
and this side of Greece,
01:12.2
but we're endlessly thankful that it happened.
01:14.8
And in this video,
01:16.1
we'll share with you some tips
01:17.4
so you could fall in love with it
01:18.7
the way we did.
01:20.8
Before we begin,
01:21.8
if you haven't yet,
01:22.8
please take the time to subscribe to this channel
01:25.0
and click the bell icon next to it
01:26.8
so you're notified whenever we have new travel videos.

01:41.5
The term Kastorya can refer to two things.
01:44.4
One is the regional unit in Greece called Kastorya.
01:47.7
Think of it as a prefecture.
01:50.1
But its capital city is also called Kastorya.
01:53.4
In this video,
01:54.4
we'll be using it mostly to refer to the city.
01:57.7
Kastorya is part of the region of Western Macedonia in Northern Greece,
02:02.0
near the border with Albania.
02:03.8
You'll find it in the middle of the beautiful Lake Orestiada.
02:07.5
In pictures, it's easy to assume that it's on an island,
02:10.8
but it's actually set on a promontory
02:12.8
sticking out into the water.
02:15.2
The city is best known for its trove of Byzantine churches
02:18.6
and its once thriving fur industry,
02:21.0
which until recently had been driving its economy.
02:24.3
Today, however, Kastorya's other wonders is slowly getting more attention,
02:28.9
opening it up to tourism.
02:30.8
No surprise there really because it is brimming with attractions
02:33.8
that may or may not be quintessentially Greek,
02:36.4
but worthwhile all the same.
02:38.7
The official language is Greek.
02:40.5
And yes, Greece has its own alphabet,
02:43.3
which can be intimidating at first.
02:45.3
There's a bit of a language barrier,
02:47.3
but you'll find locals who can speak English well
02:49.7
and street signs are written both in Greek and English,
02:52.5
so going around isn't a problem at all.
02:55.3
The time zone is UTC plus 2 or Eastern European Time.
02:59.9
Daylight saving time is observed from the last Sunday in March
03:03.1
to last Sunday in October,
03:05.1
pushing it an hour ahead.
03:06.8
So depending on the time of the year,
03:09.0
it's 6 or 5 hours ahead of the Philippines, Singapore, and Malaysia.
03:14.6
The official currency is the Euro.
03:16.9
And when it comes to modes of payment,
03:18.9
cash is still the most common,
03:20.7
but credit card payments are accepted in some establishments.
03:24.7
Power sockets are Type F, which also accepts Type C plugs.
03:29.2
And oh, Greece is party to the Schengen Agreement,
03:32.0
which means travelers from most countries including the Philippines
03:35.2
need to secure and present a Schengen Visa to enter.
03:38.4
We'll be discussing the Schengen Visa in our future videos.
03:41.9
The nearest airport is the Castoria Airport Aristotle,
03:45.4
located in nearby town of Argos Orestiko.
03:48.9
But it only serves a limited number of domestic flights,
03:51.9
mostly from Athens.
03:53.6
By limited, I mean flights are not available daily.
03:56.9
If you find a flight that matches your schedule,
03:58.9
then it is the fastest way.
04:01.4
Otherwise, you'll need to look for another gateway,
04:03.9
and the closest international airport to the airport is Argos.
04:08.0
You'll need to look for another gateway,
04:10.0
and the closest international airport is in Thessaloniki,
04:13.3
which is 145 km away.
04:16.8
Since we came from Manila, we had to connect in Athens.
04:20.3
Here, we caught a domestic Sky Express flight to Thessaloniki.
04:24.0
Our host family had us picked up at the airport,
04:26.5
so we didn't need to worry about a transfer.
04:29.0
But if you're taking public transportation,
04:31.0
here's what we gathered from each agency's official websites.
04:35.2
From the airport, take bus 01X,
04:37.7
which will take you to the Macedonia Intercity Bus Station,
04:41.2
operated by KTEL.
04:43.0
There's a bus every 20 to 25 minutes from 6.10am to 10.40pm.
04:48.7
Travel time is 50 to 55 minutes.
04:51.7
Double-check the schedule at this website.
04:55.2
And then, catch a KTEL bus bound for Castoria.
04:58.7
There are only 5 to 6 journeys per day.
05:01.4
The earliest bus is scheduled at 9am,
05:04.0
and the last bus leaves the station at 8.30pm on most days
05:07.6
or 9.30pm on Friday and Sunday.
05:11.1
This schedule might change, so double-check by visiting this website
05:15.1
and click itineraries outside the prefecture.
05:18.1
Travel time is roughly 3 hours.
05:22.8
If you're coming from Athens,
05:24.3
the fastest way, as mentioned, is by taking a flight to Castoria Airport.
05:28.3
But aside from flying, it's also possible to travel by bus.
05:32.3
From Athens to Castoria, there's one direct bus a day.
05:35.8
And it's scheduled to leave at 9.30am.
05:39.3
Travel time is 12 hours and 30 minutes,
05:41.8
which stops in Lamia, Larissa, and Kozani.
05:45.3
The fare is €48.50.
05:48.3
Another option, albeit much more complicated,
05:50.8
is to board a bus straight to Kozani, which will take 7 hours,
05:54.8
and then catch another bus to Castoria, which will take 75 minutes.
06:00.1
But you'll also have to take into consideration the layover waiting time
06:03.6
because buses are few and far between.
06:06.1
Total travel time might still equal the direct bus depending on your timing.
06:17.1
We visited Castoria in May, which was ideal in many ways.
06:21.1
The weather was pleasant and the temperature very comfortable.
06:24.6
And because the peak season wasn't there yet,
06:26.6
the prices were also very friendly.
06:28.8
We also got to witness the glorification ceremony in honor of St. Sophia,
06:32.8
an important and newly proclaimed saint in the Greek Orthodox Church.
06:36.8
It happens every May 6 here at the 700-year-old Moni Panagias Kleisouras.
06:42.8
But every local we met told us that Castoria is a year-round destination.
06:47.3
May is a shoulder month leading to summer, which is the busiest season,
06:51.3
so expect direct flights from Athens to resume operations
06:54.6
and accommodations to be slightly pricier,
06:57.1
but still incredibly affordable compared to other touristy destinations in Greece.
07:02.6
Castoria Prefecture is home to the biggest music festival in Greece.
07:06.6
For a few days in the summer, usually in August,
07:09.6
all roads lead to Nestorio, a small village home to this site,
07:13.6
where 50,000 music fans gather.
07:16.6
It's called River Party because, well, it's a massive party by the river.
07:22.3
But while we were walking around,
07:23.8
we could imagine how pretty the city would be in autumn.
07:27.3
Trees line the lakeshore and deciduous woods cover many of its hills.
07:31.8
And in winter, Castoria is said to be a wonderland.
07:35.3
The lake freezes over.
07:37.3
A small ski resort also attracts adventurers, especially beginners.
07:41.8
A wild winter festival also erupts from January 6 to 8.
07:46.3
It's called Ragout Zaria.
07:48.3
Forgive me if I'm mispronouncing it,
07:50.5
but I'll probably murder many Greek pronunciations in this video,
07:54.5
so there.
07:56.5
This festival is a celebration in honor of Dionysus,
08:00.0
the ancient Greek god of wine, festivity, pleasure, and ecstasy.
08:11.8
First, let's be familiar with the geography of Castoria.
08:15.0
As mentioned, Castoria is cradled by a peninsula jutting out into Lake Orestiada.
08:20.0
It's almost completely surrounded by water, save for its western part.
08:24.5
The easternmost tip is crumpled with limestone peaks.
08:27.8
While the city also covers parts of the mainland,
08:30.8
its heart and soul lie here, near the Neck.
08:34.3
It's a small but hillous city,
08:36.0
but you can traverse it on foot from coast to coast, north to south, or back.
08:40.8
So anywhere in the city is within easy reach no matter where you stay.
08:45.3
That said, there are three remarkable hotels that we have visited.
08:49.3
The first is Hotel Orologopulo.
08:51.8
Built in the 19th century,
08:53.5
this 250-year-old mansion has been transformed into a 9-room hotel
08:58.0
that mixes modernity and history.
09:00.5
The look and feel remain very cozy and traditional,
09:03.3
but the amenities are quite modern.
09:09.8
It's located in the Dolce area near Dolce Square,
09:12.8
in the southeastern side of the city proper, which is very convenient.
09:17.0
Around the area are restaurants and cafes,
09:19.0
and even the lakeside is just a quick stroll away.
09:22.5
A room costs around €89 per night, inclusive of breakfast.
09:26.5
And mind you, they serve really really good breakfast.
09:30.3
My teammates, Vince and Ces,
09:31.8
couldn't stop talking about the small but tasty selection,
09:34.8
especially the cold cuts, local cheeses, and cakes.
09:38.5
The service was also impeccable.
09:40.8
Cideris, the property manager, made sure we were equipped
09:44.0
with all the info we needed to know about the area.
09:47.0
We'll be providing links to this incredible hotel
09:49.3
and the other lodges I'll be mentioning in this video
09:52.0
so you could easily find them.
09:53.5
Just check the links in the description or the pinned comment.
09:57.5
Not too far away is another building with great historical value,
10:01.3
Vergula's Mansion, one of the oldest hotels in the city.
10:05.3
Like Orogopulo, this was constructed around 200 years ago.
10:09.5
As soon as we set foot in the property,
10:11.5
we were greeted by its owner and his picturesque garden,
10:14.8
adorned by various flowers and collectibles from around the world.
10:18.3
And as you let your gaze wander,
10:20.3
you'll immediately notice its incredible setting.
10:23.0
Vergula's Mansion is perched on a cliff overlooking the lake,
10:26.8
offering one of the best views in the city.
10:30.3
We didn't actually spend the night here,
10:32.0
but its current owner toured us around
10:34.0
and shared with us that the place has sentimental value to him too.
10:37.8
Turned out, when he was in grade school,
10:40.0
this was his boarding house and it gave him a lot of good memories
10:43.5
that when an opportunity to buy it presented itself, he grabbed it.
10:47.8
He took us to the hotel's cross-shaped basement,
10:50.5
where it became apparent that it was built on a rock.
10:53.5
Remnants from its early days still remain,
10:55.8
like this niche with a water jar used for washing in the olden days.
10:59.8
For the longest time, this niche was covered within the wall
11:03.0
and was only rediscovered when he had the room renovated.
11:07.0
A stay here costs €81 a night, inclusive of breakfast.
11:11.8
The third hotel in the city center we'd like to show you is much more luxurious.
11:16.0
This is Esperos Palace Luxury and Spa Hotel,
11:19.0
located outside the peninsula but still close to key attractions.
11:23.0
While the first two I mentioned were more homey and cozy,
11:26.0
Esperos is very modern, elegant, and grand.
11:29.5
Housing 54 spotless and spacious rooms, 14 of which are suites,
11:34.5
each filled with many conveniences you'd expect from 5-star properties.
11:38.5
From anatomical beds to fragrant toiletries to bathrobes,
11:42.5
it embodies the best that Castorian hospitality has to offer.
11:46.3
Even the restroom near the lobby is just so fabulous.
11:50.0
And oh, this grey marble was imported from Crete
11:53.0
while this gorgeous white marble is from the Kozani region.
11:57.0
At its core is this roomy and naturally lit restaurant area
12:01.0
with a stellar winterfellish tree sculpture as its centerpiece.
12:04.8
It's a naked tree.
12:06.0
Well, almost, because it only has one leaf.
12:09.5
One single leaf and eagle-eye diners can spend a few minutes spotting it.
12:14.5
The menu is mostly Western.
12:16.5
The bestsellers are its gigantic burgers, ranging from 9 to 13 Euro,
12:21.5
the priciest of which is this Esperos burger,
12:24.0
composed of a massive 200-gram patty with bacon, cheddar,
12:28.0
cucumber, pickles, arugula, tomato, and a fried egg,
12:32.0
slathered with remoulade sauce.
12:34.5
Pasta dishes are also popular, ranging from 7 to 11 Euro.
12:38.5
Our hosts highly recommended the spaghetti with salmon and lemon sauce
12:42.5
and penne with broccoli and smoked pork belly.
12:46.0
The Greek salad and Florina peppers were also remarkably fresh and delicious.
12:51.5
These three are the properties that our hosts and other locals we talked to
12:55.3
sang the highest praises for.
12:57.5
But there are more options.
12:59.0
For budget travelers, you'll find pocket-friendly inns
13:01.8
for as low as 40 Euro per night for a double or twin room.
13:06.0
If you wish to attend the River Party music festival
13:08.5
or explore the Nestorio area and you're looking for a more luxurious retreat,
13:12.8
consider the 4-star Afkos Gramos Boutique Hotel Resort,
13:16.3
which overlooks both the Aliak Monas River and the Gramos Mountain.
13:20.3
Each room is well-appointed and it also houses a restaurant
13:24.0
serving sumptuous traditional Greek fare
13:26.5
and a terrace that allows a fantastic view of Nestorio.
13:30.5
Kastoria is a great addition to your Greater Balkan Tour too.
13:34.0
If you're crossing the Greece-Albania border from Kastoria
13:37.0
and you're looking for a place to spend the night,
13:39.3
consider Crystal Resort in the idyllic border village of Krista Lopihi.
13:43.8
Each room here is spacious.
13:45.5
It also has a restaurant where you could fill up
13:47.8
before you continue your journey across the region.
13:51.0
Kastoria is not particularly known as a foodie destination,
13:54.5
but it should be.
13:55.8
Out of all the places we visited,
13:57.5
this is where we had some of the best meals
13:59.5
that graced our palate in the Balkan region.
14:02.5
Every single ingredient,
14:04.0
from the much bragged about Florina peppers
14:06.5
to the succulent lamb chops, is high-quality
14:09.5
and its freshness is undeniable.
14:12.0
We'll be creating a separate video discussing
14:14.0
how to make the best Florina peppers
14:16.0
in the Balkan region.
14:18.5
We'll be creating a separate video
14:20.0
describing the dishes we tried.
14:21.5
But here's a quick rundown of the places
14:23.5
you shouldn't miss while in the city.
14:25.5
Starting with...
14:28.5
This quaint mansion converted into a restaurant
14:31.0
also has a romantic courtyard for alfresco dining.
14:34.0
Its menu is composed mainly of traditional local dishes.
14:37.5
From the sarmades, which are pickled cabbage
14:40.0
stuffed with minced meat and rice,
14:42.0
to Kastorian butter beans,
14:43.5
baked with herbs, carrots, and tomatoes.
14:47.0
To Bajos, which is brine cheese prepared Saganaki-style.
14:51.0
Here at Paliya Poli, it's served with fried egg.
14:54.0
Its Kraneja salad is also refreshingly good,
14:57.0
made up of arugula, spinach, lettuce, and dried tomatoes,
15:00.5
doused with cranberry sauce,
15:02.0
and topped with pomegranate and crab apple slices.
15:05.0
It's the right blend of veggies and fruits
15:07.0
elevated by a bit of sweetness.
15:10.0
This resto is located just across the street
15:12.0
from the lake shore,
15:13.0
so you could easily take in stunning views
15:15.5
after your meal.
15:18.0
Speaking of stunning views,
15:19.5
it's hard to rival the vista offered here
15:22.0
at Prophet Elias or Elias Lounge Cafe.
15:25.0
Perched on a hilltop,
15:26.5
it has comfy couches stationed by the glass walls,
15:29.5
allowing an unobstructed view of the entire peninsula.
15:33.0
It has everything you want at a cafe.
15:35.5
Aside from the spectacular view and a gorgeous location,
15:38.0
it also serves rich coffee and tasty dessert.
15:41.0
We were able to try its strawberry, cookies and cream,
15:43.5
and classic hot chocolate versions.
15:46.0
It also fosters a relaxing atmosphere.
15:49.0
It was so quiet during our visit that if I had more time,
15:52.0
I would have spent the entire afternoon here
15:54.5
with a book on one hand and a cup of coffee on the other.
15:59.0
If you prefer something easier on the pocket,
16:01.5
this €1 kebab place might be just the spot for you.
16:05.0
Yes, €1!
16:07.0
Here, many of the skewered items cost only €1 per steak,
16:11.0
like this pork kebab, chicken kebab, and sausage.
16:15.0
These fries and tzatziki sauce also cost €1 per order.
16:19.0
But you wouldn't know when you taste it
16:20.5
because they're all perfectly cooked,
16:22.5
so juicy and not dry at all.
16:27.0
Our host also took us to this humble eatery owned by his aunt Anna,
16:31.0
roughly 20 minutes from the city center.
16:33.5
It's a bit out of the way,
16:34.5
but it was our favorite meal in our entire stay in Castoria,
16:37.5
mainly because we adore home-cooked meals.
16:41.0
It serves traditional Northern Greek or Macedonian dishes,
16:44.0
but somehow, these plates had more soul.
16:46.5
We started with this pita, which was filled with cheese,
16:49.5
and it was so good we could have ended the meal right then.
16:52.5
Its armadas or cabbage rolls were the best we had tried.
16:56.0
A bit more sour than usual, but really really tasty.
17:00.0
This dip is made of smashed walnut with eggplant,
17:03.0
similar to hummus but better.
17:05.5
We were also served three types of salad.
17:07.5
This eggplant salad was my fave,
17:09.5
but this Russian salad was also fantastic.
17:12.5
And while I normally don't enjoy beets,
17:14.0
this beetroot salad with yogurt and walnuts was surprisingly delightful.
17:18.0
It was earthy and creamy.
17:20.5
This cabbage salad was also very refreshing.
17:23.5
Not sure what this is called,
17:24.5
but the cabbage was said to be soaked for many months
17:27.5
and mixed with bell peppers, celery, and dill.
17:31.0
We've also tasted many versions of bajo before,
17:33.5
but this one, while slightly oilier,
17:36.0
was also flakier, crispier, and a tad saltier,
17:39.5
which was perfect for me.
17:41.5
And these were just the appetizers.
17:43.5
For the main course, we were served a smorgasbord of grilled meat,
17:47.0
but the standout was the pancetta, which was smoky and perfectly cooked.
17:51.0
So were these meatballs.
17:53.0
They were so tender and not dense at all.
17:56.0
We could actually feel the meat bits and didn't taste processed,
17:59.0
if you know what I mean.
18:00.5
This sausage isn't the usual either.
18:02.5
It was made with wild boar meat, so it was gamey,
18:05.5
but they used the fatty parts,
18:07.0
which reminded us of longganisa or Filipino sausages back home.
18:11.5
Our lunch here was certainly one of the most unforgettable,
18:14.5
not just in Greece, but in the whole Balkan region during our trip.

As a small, quiet city, Kastoria isn't too big on nightlife.
18:22.5
But you could still find some spots to let loose a bit and grab a drink.
18:26.5
One of them is Nautical Hall, which is set by the lake.
18:29.5
It offers a wide selection of drinks,
18:31.5
from wines to beers to its signature cocktails.
18:35.0
Its bar show is also pretty good but slightly costlier than other restaurants in the city.
18:40.0
Don't forget to go out to the terrace for a view of the city lights
18:43.0
reflected on the peaceful lake below.
18:52.0
Kastoria is packed with attractions that are worth your time and energy.
18:55.5
From its limestone caves to countless hilltop viewpoints,
18:59.0
to Neolithic sites, to Byzantine churches,
19:02.0
Kastoria will keep you busy.
19:04.5
