The traditional dance referred to as "Mamaracho" in Equatorial Guinea is actually known as "Okuyi" or "Mekuyo" and is a significant cultural tradition in the region. This dance has its origins in the rites of passage of western and southern ethnic groups in Central Africa, particularly the Mpongwe and Galwa regions. Introduced to Equatorial Guinea by the Benga people of Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, it spread to various areas including Corisco, Cabo San Juan, and Mbini. By the early 20th century, the Mekuyo tradition was well-established in areas like Bata, with several famous performers emerging from Equatorial Guinea and the Litoral Province​​. The Okuyi performers wear large, loose costumes made from raffia palm or bamboo, designed to resemble the spirit of ancestors. The costumes are typically made using hessian fabric, and the dancers wear masks made from the wood of the Alstonia congensis tree.
