Can't decide where to stay for your next Hong Kong trip?
00:07.1
Let's break it down and by the end of this video, you'll probably have a good idea on the best area for you.
00:18.0
Hey there, poor traveler! We are Vince and Yosh, and we have been vlogging for the past 13 years.
00:23.9
We have visited Hong Kong several times, and we have tried staying in most major areas, so let's compare.
00:30.5
But wait, wait, wait! Before we begin, if you're new to this channel, you can help us create more helpful videos like this

00:48.8
Okay, here's the thing. Hong Kong may be small, but it is a bit complicated, and the key points of interest are spread throughout the territory.
00:57.8
The airport is here, the business district.
01:00.0
Disneyland is here, and the shopping centers are right here.
01:05.3
So to better understand that, let's first take a look at Hong Kong's geography.
01:14.0
This is Hong Kong. Let's zoom in a bit.
01:17.7
As you can see, much of it is a peninsula protruding from the southern coast of China.
01:22.6
To its north is Shenzhen, and to its west, now connected by a bridge, is Macau.
01:27.5
And like Macau, Hong Kong is a...
01:30.0
Special Administrative Region of China.
01:32.8
Yes, it is a part of China, but it has its own economy, currency, and immigration laws.
01:38.6
That's why even Chinese mainlanders still need to go through immigration checks when entering Hong Kong.
01:44.0
It is composed of three main regions.
01:47.1
Hong Kong Island, which is this island.
01:50.1
Kowloon on the peninsula.
01:51.9
And the New Territories, which is all over the place, but includes 200 outlying islands including this.
02:00.3
And it's best to be familiar with it because you'll most likely pass through it
02:04.6
because you'll find the Hong Kong International Airport right here,
02:08.8
located on reclaimed land on Chek Lap Kok Island, just off Lantau.
02:13.7
Moving on, this part of Lantau closest to the airport is called Tung Chung.
02:18.5
We'll discuss this later on, but for now, let's head downtown.
02:22.9
Hong Kong City Center has two phases.
02:25.1
One of them is Kowloon, which covers most of the developed area on the peninsula,
02:31.0
This is the older and more traditional side of the city.
02:34.4
It's what many consider quintessential Hong Kong.
02:37.1
It's highly developed, yes, but you'll easily notice that many of the buildings are not very modern.
02:42.6
It is dense, busy, and incredibly textured.
02:46.2
But you've probably seen this side of Hong Kong a lot because it is often used as a setting in Hollywood movies.
02:53.2
Just across the Victoria Harbor lies Hong Kong Island,
02:56.6
whose central northern edge is considered the city's central...
03:00.4
If Kowloon is gritty and traditional, Hong Kong Island is polished and aesthetically more colonial,
03:06.8
blending Chinese culture with British influence as well.
03:10.3
But it is divided into smaller neighborhoods, including Central, Admiralty, Wan Chai, Xiong Wan, and Causeway Bay.
03:18.7
The truth is, Hong Kong has 18 smaller districts,
03:21.8
but for tourists, especially first-timers, only a few of these will matter to you.
03:27.3
So, which is the best area to stay?
03:30.2
Well, that depends on your specific itinerary.
03:33.3
But let's take a look at each main area to see if this is the one for you.
03:38.1
Starting with Tsim Sha Tsui.
03:43.2
Tsim Sha Tsui, or TST, is well-known among budget travelers because of three things.
03:48.3
First, accessibility.
03:50.5
There is no direct train line between TST and the airport,
03:53.5
but there are direct airport buses that stop at multiple points across the district.
03:59.8
Its main artery is Nathan Road, which runs parallel to the A21 bus route
04:04.4
and also to a section of the MTR or subway train's Chuen 1 line.
04:09.7
This subway line also connects TST to the Central District on the other side of the harbor.
04:15.3
There are multiple MTR stations, ferry terminals, and bus stops here.
04:19.7
See? Very accessible.
04:21.7
The second reason is its proximity to some key attractions including the Avenue of Stars,
04:26.9
the K11 Mall, and the shopping streets in Mongkong,
04:29.8
and Jordan areas.
04:31.5
And lastly, there's a lot of budget-friendly accommodations in Tsim Sha Tsui.
04:36.3
Most of them housed in two famous or infamous buildings,
04:40.7
the Chungking Mansions and Mirador Mansion.
04:43.4
You may have heard a lot about these two properties before.
04:46.5
Some may be good, some may be not so good.
04:49.7
So, what's the truth?
04:52.1
Well, these two are old residential buildings,
04:55.0
but many owners have turned their units into guest houses or mini hotels,
05:01.3
They look nice and polished from afar,
05:04.1
but up close, it can be a bit intimidating.
05:07.5
Its crowded ground floor is a maze of various shops.
05:10.9
And when you go inside,
05:12.9
let's just say that these buildings have seen better days.
05:16.6
But don't write it off yet.
05:18.5
Actually, in our early years, we always stayed here
05:21.4
and with the exception of long elevator lines occasionally,
05:24.7
we never really had a bad experience.
05:27.3
That's not to invalidate other accounts I've seen on this channel,
05:29.1
That's not to invalidate other accounts I've seen on this channel,
05:29.6
which mention bedbugs and all.
05:31.9
I'm just saying, we didn't have that kind of experience,
05:34.7
even in our most recent stay here just a few months ago.
05:38.5
But that's the thing,
05:39.7
while they look dated or dare I say dilapidated from the hallways,
05:44.0
some units are actually clean and well-kept inside.
05:47.8
Just a few months ago,
05:49.1
we booked a room at Victoria Inn at Mirador Mansion
05:52.0
and it was a very pleasant stay.
05:54.4
It's just a matter of booking a reputable establishment,
05:57.1
so always check reviews.
05:58.8
But beware, because space is such a scarce commodity
06:02.1
in these parts of Hong Kong,
06:04.0
most rooms in Kowloon are small and cramped,
06:07.8
to say the least.
06:09.1
There isn't much space to move around,
06:11.4
but you'll find properties that are cleverly designed.
06:14.8
By the way, Tsim Sha Tsui is mostly flat,
06:17.6
which makes a walk across the area a walk in the park.
06:20.9
The streets are busy and narrow though,
06:22.7
so don't be too complacent.
06:24.7
We have a list of suggested hotels not just in Tsim Sha Tsui,
06:27.8
but in other districts,
06:28.7
which we're tackling in this video.
06:30.7
Just follow the link in the description and pin comment.
06:33.7
If you decide to book with Klook,

06:50.7
Another area worth checking out in Kowloon is Mong Kok.
06:54.3
Technically, it is part of Yau Chim Mong District.
06:57.6
The same administrative office,
06:58.7
the same administrative unit that Tsim Sha Tsui belongs to.
07:01.2
And it has a lot of similarities to TST.
07:04.2
It is also accessible from the airport by the same direct bus,
07:09.3
It's also along the Truen 1 line,
07:11.3
which is connected to Central and Nathan Road,
07:14.0
which is punctuated by multiple bus stops.
07:17.3
But the vibe in Mong Kok is significantly different.
07:20.3
Its streets are lit by colorful neon signs,
07:23.1
and the energy here is more buzzing, more frenetic.
07:27.0
It's a popular shopping area.
07:28.7
Its map is scribbled with night markets and shopping streets,
07:32.8
including the legendary Sneaker Street.
07:35.5
So if you love shopping for shoes,
07:37.5
this is the spot for you.
07:40.0
And if you're into street food,
07:41.8
well, you're gonna love Mong Kok.
07:44.5
When searching online,
07:45.5
you'll also come across several affordable accommodations in Mong Kok,
07:49.2
both old and new.
07:51.0
Yep, there are a lot of cheap hotels and guest houses in Mong Kok too,
07:55.0
just like in Tsim Sha Tsui,
07:56.2
sometimes cheaper than Tsim Sha Tsui.
07:58.7
This is Hong Kong's Political and Commercial Center.
08:07.0
As mentioned earlier,
08:08.4
it looks more polished and more modern than Kowloon.
08:12.0
Strictly speaking though,
08:13.4
Central refers to this area.
08:15.9
But for tourism purposes,
08:17.6
the term is sometimes used loosely to include the whole Central and Western District,
08:22.1
encompassing Admiralty and Xiong Wan.
08:25.6
Central is also bustling, especially at rush hours,
08:28.7
but it gets less busy as you move away from it.
08:31.9
On our most recent trip,
08:33.4
we also stayed in this part of Xiong Wan,
08:35.9
which is very quiet.
08:37.9
Central is your jump-off point to two popular attractions,
08:41.2
Victoria Peak and Ocean Park.
08:43.4
So if your itinerary has these two sites on two separate days,
08:47.2
this may be a good base.
08:49.2
Central is also easily accessible.
08:52.1
There is a direct bus from the airport,
08:53.9
which is the A11 bus.
08:55.6
But most importantly,
08:57.1
there is a direct train.
08:58.7
The Airport Express,
09:00.3
which is the fastest way to get to the city center.
09:03.3
You can reach Central in roughly 30 minutes from the airport,
09:06.8
which is significantly quicker than taking the bus
09:09.3
or multiple regular train rides,
09:10.9
especially at rush hours.
09:12.8
If you want to book a seat on the Airport Express train,
09:15.7
you can reserve in advance on Clock 2.
09:18.3
We'll add the link in the description and pinned comment.
09:21.4
Another big pro for Central is that
09:23.4
it's dotted with countless iconic foodie spots,
09:26.4
and many of them are affordable.
09:28.7
Some are even awarded with a Michelin Bib Gourmand or Michelin stars.
09:32.5
I've stayed at the Central area a number of times,
09:35.3
and I loved it each time because of these restaurants.
09:38.3
There's even a food tour around the district.
09:40.8
While many hotels in Central District are upscale,
09:44.0
it is not impossible to find relatively inexpensive places to stay,
09:47.9
especially in the Sheung Wan area.
09:50.2
So, is Central the perfect base in Hong Kong?
09:53.0
What's the catch?
09:54.6
As much as I adore Central,
09:56.3
it's not for everyone.
09:59.0
The ground is very uneven,
10:01.2
and there are a lot of stairs.
10:03.5
Walking around can be exhausting if you're not used to it,
10:06.3
and it can be very challenging for those with mobility issues.
10:10.1
And although not as bad as Kowloon hotels,
10:12.7
space here is also costly,
10:14.9
so expect tiny cozy rooms.
10:17.9
Before I move on to the next spot,
10:19.8
I'd also like to mention neighboring Wan Chai and Causeway Bay.
10:23.3
They are located in administrative districts separate from Central,
10:26.7
but to be honest,
10:28.8
you won't feel the difference.
10:30.6
But these two are popular among expats,
10:33.6
so they do feel more cosmopolitan.
10:36.4
Causeway Bay is also a shopping and entertainment hub,
10:39.3
and is often recommended for families.
10:48.6
At this point, I'd like to show you the map again.
10:51.4
This is the Hong Kong International Airport,
10:53.8
as mentioned, located on reclaimed land on Chek Lap Kok Island,
10:57.2
just off Lantau Island.
10:59.1
This area close to the airport is called Sky City,
11:02.5
which harbors several reputable hotels.
11:05.3
And this part of Lantau Island closest to the airport is called Tung Chung.
11:09.7
Many of the lists of best places to stay that you'll find online
11:13.2
don't even mention these two areas.
11:15.7
So why am I telling you this?
11:18.9
Simple, because I disagree.
11:21.5
Don't dismiss them right away.
11:23.8
I actually believe that in many cases,
11:26.2
these two places may be ideal for some travelers.
11:30.2
Huh? You might be asking,
11:31.9
but Yosh, it's so far away and detached from the city center.
11:36.0
Why would you think it's a good idea to stay here at all?
11:40.1
Well, hear me out.
11:41.7
It's not for everyone,
11:42.9
but if it's your first time and staying in Hong Kong for four days or shorter,
11:47.3
and your itinerary involves a full day at Hong Kong Disneyland,
11:50.6
a visit to Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car which will take you to the Big Buddha,
11:54.3
or perhaps with a day tour at Tai Oven,
11:57.0
and you're also going to do a Macau side trip,
11:59.9
well, look at this map.
12:02.2
The airport is here, Disneyland here,
12:04.4
the Ngong Ping Cable Car is here,
12:06.2
the Big Buddha here,
12:07.3
and to get to Macau,
12:08.6
you'll need to make it through the Hong Kong-Juhai-Macau Bridge Port,
12:15.1
If your hotel is here in Kowloon or Central Area,
12:18.3
you're gonna be spending a lot of time and money
12:20.7
just to get to this part over and over again.
12:24.0
So why not just book your hotel here
12:25.8
at either the Sky City or in Tungchong?
12:28.6
Most of the hotels here offer free bus transfer
12:31.9
to and from the airport and Tungchong MTR Station.
12:35.7
Yep, completely free of charge.
12:37.9
And there's usually a bus every 30 minutes or so.
12:41.5
Most hotels here are a bit high-end,
12:43.7
Marriott, Sheraton, and the like,
12:46.0
but its prices are competitive,
12:48.2
much much lower compared to its counterparts in the city center
12:51.8
and sometimes up to par with mid-range ones.
12:55.8
last year, we visited in peak season.
12:58.6
We booked two hotels,
13:00.0
a supposedly budget hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui
13:02.6
and this more upscale hotel in Tungchong.
13:05.5
For the TST Hotel,
13:07.1
we paid 930 HKD per night.
13:11.1
Yes, I know it's still steep,
13:12.8
but this was really one of the cheapest we found for that period.
13:16.9
But within the same time frame,
13:18.4
this room at 4 points by Sheraton in Tungchong
13:21.3
costs 990 HKD per night.
13:24.3
That's only a 60 HKD difference per night
13:27.9
and there's a big difference in the experience.
13:31.1
Our room in Tungchong was at a full-service hotel
13:33.7
and was much much much more spacious.
13:39.3
But this area has its cons.
13:42.0
First, very limited affordable dining options.
13:45.5
We had to make sure we had dinner elsewhere
13:47.8
before coming back to the hotel
13:49.4
with the expensive in-house restaurants.
13:51.9
That or the convenience store.
13:54.3
And yes, obviously, as mentioned,
13:56.6
it's far from the city center.
13:58.5
But you can work around it.
14:00.1
Just design your itinerary in a way that would allow you to visit
14:03.0
the Kowloon and Hong Kong Island attractions in one day or so,
14:06.4
so you'd still get to see the city center efficiently.
14:09.4
Again, this is not for everyone.
14:11.8
If your itinerary calls for more time in the city center,
14:14.9
then don't book a hotel here.
14:16.7
But if you have the Disneyland, Ngong Ting, and Macau trifecta
14:19.7
in your travel plans, consider this.
14:22.4
And oh, I forget.
14:24.3
The City Gate Outlet Mall is also here in Tungchong
14:27.2
near the Ngong Ting Cable Car Station.
14:29.7
So it has shopping perks too.
14:36.9
So, out of all the areas we described,
14:39.9
which is the absolute best?
14:42.8
And again, I'd have to answer with that depends on your itinerary.
14:47.3
If most of the places you're gonna visit are in Lantau Island like Disneyland,
14:51.4
Ngong Ting 360, and you're doing a day trip to Macau,
14:54.3
I really think Sky City and Tungchong are your best bets.
14:58.6
If your itinerary involves multiple days in the city center,
15:01.7
then stay in either Kowloon or Hong Kong Island.
15:05.0
If you're a foodie, I recommend you stay in Central or Xiong Wan District.
15:09.0
If you like shopping and night markets,
15:10.9
and you're working with a very tight budget,
15:13.5
stay in Mongkok or Tsim Sha Tsui.
15:15.5
As for me, if you ask me to choose without any set itinerary,
15:20.1
I'd pick Central and Xiong Wan.
15:22.3
It has all the things I want in a neighbor home,
15:24.1
especially easy access from the airport whether by bus or by airport express train,
15:29.1
and it's also close to key attractions like Victoria Peak,
15:32.1
and there are a lot of delicious food spots.
15:35.1
So, yep, it's the Central Xiong Wan area for me.
15:38.1
But that's just me.
15:41.1
