or pseudo-leftist, galit na galit sila sa US, and then pagdating sa China, or worse, Russia,

my goodness, or Putin, ang dami nila mga excuses.

Ah, NATO expansion yan, ay, kawawak. Parang, wow, kawawa pa yung Russia na sinugod yung maliit na kapitbayan niya.

Oh, kawawa pang China na gusto niyang suguri ng Taiwan. Kawawa pang China, binambuli tayo sa West Philippine Sea.

Now, the thing with Riza is that she doesn't grandstand.

That's an interesting thing.

Lumalabas na grand yung kanyang interventions because sobrang tama yung ginagawa niya. Sobrang matapang siya.

But never siya nag-grandstand. Never siya nagpa-cute.

Never siya nag-rely sa mga PR people.

She's an award-winning journalist.

And yet if you look at it, she's really convictions and principle-based in her approach.

And I call her the Iron Lady of the progressive movement in the Philippines.

Which brings me back to my biggest suspicion.

I think a big part why that commensurate rallying effect around Riza is not happening

is because ito nga, kasi sa Pilipinas talagang, right-wing talagang Pilipinas.

Katulad ng Amerika, I think Filipinos are generally more center-right than center-left, right?

Which tells you how amazing it has been that Riza has made it this far.

But I think it also tells you a little bit about the challenge of creating more rallying effect around her.

Kasi si Leni very center eh, to be honest.

I mean, if you look at some of her positionings on abortion, on divorce, actually center-right.

Quite conservative.

Si BBM pa nga yung medyo liberal dun sa mga ibang issues.

If you wanna really be strict about it.

But Riza has been consistently center-center-left, right?

But I think in the Philippines, we still have to properly distinguish between different progressive groups.

a lot of these countries, a big part of their success was because of decades of leadership under center-left governments.

Social democratic governments.

SPD in Germany, for instance.

Labor in Norway or Social Democrats in Sweden, for instance, right?

They played a very important role in the success of the most successful countries on earth today.

And their versions in places like South Korea and Taiwan.

If you look at the Democratic Progressive Party of Tsai Ing-wen,

Tignan, sobrang beshi si Tsai Ing-wen in Riza.

And I think they share a lot of socio-economic policies.

Not only their China stance, no?

Hindi lang dahil matapang silang pareho.

So if you look at Taiwan, the DPP.

If you look at the former president of South Korea and the main opposition party in South Korea.

If you look at Scandinavian countries, a lot of the most progressive countries in the world, center-lefting governments nila.

Center enough na hindi revolutionary, na hindi pa-communista.

But at the same, left enough to push for structural transformation, strong healthcare systems,

strong education systems, strong industrial policy, optimal forms of state interventions.

And the other good thing I appreciate also with center-left is unlike yung mga far-left,

yung mga pa-communista, yung mga iwan na iba dyan,

hindi sila pro-China or pro-Russia.

Critical sila sa US, critical din sila sa mga ibang non-Western superpowers.

Kasi kung totoong against ka sa imperialismo, hindi ka lang magka-question sa Western imperialismo.

O yung ginawa ng Amerika, isang daan na nakalipas.

Titignan mo rin yung mga imperialismo ng Russia, ng mga Russo, sa kanilang mga paligid.

Giyera na ginawa nila sa Middle East.

Sinirasira nila yung gitnang silangan.

Hindi talaga ako agree dyan.

Marami akong disagreements sa mga Western countries.

Pero hindi tayo dapat nagbulag-bulagan doon sa mga mas marahas pa mga imperialist powers

or mga mas marahas na mga imperialist na kabulian nangyari sa ating karagatan.

Sa ating sariling backyard.

Hindi po ang US ang nagbubuli sa atin sa West Philippine Sea.

Hindi po ang NATO.

Hindi po ang Europe.

Hindi po Japan. Diba?

Tapos na yung Second World War.

Tapos na po yung colonization of the Philippines in the 20th century.

Of course, we can talk about new colonialism.

Pero kung speaking of new colonialism,

pag-usapan natin yung China.

Kinokontrol nila lahat ng mga resources na may mina lahat sa Africa.

O sa Pilipinas.

Ayan tayo eh.

Hindi yung mga Chinese na kapatid natin.

Talk about yung government nila, yung regime nila.

Imperialism has no color, has no race, has no ethnicity.

It's a political, geopolitical phenomenon.

I think there's nothing uniquely imperialistic about China or US, etc.

Pag lumaki talaga yung bansa na sobrang malaki at malakas,

almost inevitable na magkakaroon ka ng imperial ambitions.

Although I would say in some countries talagang malalim yung pagka-imperialist nila.

I would say Russia is a problematic case because sa napakalaki ng bansa nila, 11 time zones,

at sa napaka... eh pagod na ako.

Sa napaka-traumatic yung kanilang experience with Mongolian Golden Horde colonization back in the day in the medieval era,

ang Russia parating nagkikreate sila ng tsare.

Whether ito yung mga panahon nila Romanov's family, Ivan the Terrible, Stalin, all the way to Putin.

Yung mindset nila imperialistik talaga eh.

Yung iba na ibang syungang engot sa Pilipinas kasi yung mga palef-lef na iba dyan,

they don't go and talk to ordinary people from Georgia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, yung mga ganyan.

Lahat ng mga bansa na natakot sa mga pinagagawa ng mga regime na yan sa Kremlin.

But anyway, everything I'm saying here, guys, ayan naman yung trauma of century of humiliation.

Well, hindi lang naman ang China nga humiliate.

Na-humiliate halos tayong lahat.

Pilipinas, ilang century tayong lahat.

Kaya nagbukas sila ng major restoration, etc.

Ang problema sa mga higanting bansa like Russian and Chinese, forever pa-victim sila.

At ginagamit nila ng excuse na ito para mang-bully ng mga mas malitang bansa katulad natin.

Or Taiwan, or Ukraine, or whatever.

Kaya yun ang gusto kay Risa eh.

She doesn't fall for the trap which tells you about the sophistication of mindset and the genuine nature of her patriotism.
