When multi-awarded artist Sofronio Ilanan Mendoza moved to Canada in 1981,
00:06.5

00:10.6
through a group that he founded, the Dimasalang 3.
00:14.2
Today, these artists are paying tribute to the late maestro
00:17.5
who is better known by his initials SYM
00:20.5
through an exhibit called Walking with Sim.
00:23.5
The master painter died in September 2021 at the age of 87.
00:27.9
Walking with Sim is basically showing what he taught to us
00:36.7
and we want to give thanks and make a tribute to him for that.
00:43.1
Artist-publisher Leonardo Juncunanan considers himself fortunate enough
00:47.2
to have been mentored by the maestro.
00:49.4
He says SIM drilled in them the importance of mastering the fundamentals of classical drawing.
00:54.7
Everything starts with the basics. It's the foundation.
00:58.6
So the very foundation is the most important thing.
01:02.1
It's not just that. We also learn about history and also about life.
01:10.5
Another artist who was mentored by SIM is Mario Landicho,
01:14.7
now one of the well-known tattoo artists in Vancouver.
01:18.3
Landicho says his work as a tattoo artist was greatly enhanced
01:21.7
by the knowledge that he learned from SIM.
01:23.7
He was the one who directed me.
01:27.9
It's a level up for me in my artworks because his personal instruction for me
01:34.3
and what I learned within the group is my game changer
01:40.5
for everything I do including what I do now as a professional full-time tattoo artist.
01:47.9
24 Dimasalang 3 artists including 6 female painters
01:51.8
showed off their talent in the exhibit.
01:53.9
Animator-artist Norman Balan, who is one of the group's newer members,
01:57.9
shared that he is inspired by many of SIM's work which evoke thoughts of home.
02:02.9
Brings you back to home.
02:05.9
Mga ano eh, mga scenes.
02:07.9
Nakita ko yung work niya sa mga scenes, mga simple scenes sa Pilipinas.
02:13.9
And then yun yung tingin kong pinaka islang message niya talaga.
02:17.9
Among the guests at the exhibit is Member of Parliament Peter Julian,
02:21.9
who noted how SIM's body of work used different styles like cubism, expressionism,
02:27.9
and impressionism to effectively communicate his art.
02:31.9
He also hailed the Filipino artists featured in the exhibit
02:35.9
for contributing to the enrichment of Canadian culture.
02:38.9
Filipino community makes a phenomenal difference in the lives of Canadians,
02:43.9
the quality of life.
02:44.9
When you think about it, Filipino Canadians are present in every aspect of our life
02:50.9
and have created so much love and art and business and sport,
02:57.9
so many successes that have helped to contribute to Canada's success.
03:00.9
Filipino-Canadian lawmaker Mabel Elmore congratulated the Dimasalang III artists.
03:05.9
She says their work is a testament to the enduring legacy of SIM.
03:10.9
You make the world more beautiful by celebrating our collective human experience and essence.
03:16.9
Consul General Arlene Magno says it would be hard for her to choose a favorite from among the artwork on display.
03:22.9
But she says this showcase of Filipino talent brings honor,
03:26.9
not just to SIM but also to the whole Filipino community as well.
03:30.9
It shows Canadians na magagaling talaga ang mga Pilipino,
03:34.9
and it's also a sign of unity kasi the Dimasalang artists,
03:39.9
they come together as a group to show solidarity in the work of art.
03:46.9
Ronel Mendoza, the fifth child of SIM, says he is grateful for the tribute
03:51.9
and believes his father would be proud of his Dimasalang III artists.
