When multi-awarded artist Sofronio Ilanan Mendoza moved to Canada in 1981,

Artist-publisher Leonardo Juncunanan considers himself fortunate enough

to have been mentored by the maestro.

He says SIM drilled in them the importance of mastering the fundamentals of classical drawing.

Everything starts with the basics. It's the foundation.

It's not just that. We also learn about history and also about life.

Another artist who was mentored by SIM is Mario Landicho,

now one of the well-known tattoo artists in Vancouver.

Landicho says his work as a tattoo artist was greatly enhanced

by the knowledge that he learned from SIM.

He was the one who directed me.

It's a level up for me in my artworks because his personal instruction for me

and what I learned within the group is my game changer

for everything I do including what I do now as a professional full-time tattoo artist.

Animator-artist Norman Balan, who is one of the group's newer members,

shared that he is inspired by many of SIM's work which evoke thoughts of home.

He also hailed the Filipino artists featured in the exhibit

for contributing to the enrichment of Canadian culture.

Filipino-Canadian lawmaker Mabel Elmore congratulated the Dimasalang III artists.

She says their work is a testament to the enduring legacy of SIM.

Consul General Arlene Magno says it would be hard for her to choose a favorite from among the artwork on display.

But she says this showcase of Filipino talent brings honor,

not just to SIM but also to the whole Filipino community as well.

and it's also a sign of unity kasi the Dimasalang artists,

Ronel Mendoza, the fifth child of SIM, says he is grateful for the tribute

The exhibit at the Anvil Arts Center in New Westminster will run until May 29.
