We begin in Arizona where a Filipino mother,

is facing up to two years in prison for trying to kill her husband.

Forty-year-old Melody Feliciana Johnson,

in Superior Court on Monday in Tucson,

admitted that she tried to poison her soldier husband,

Robbie Johnson,

on two separate occasions last year

by putting bleach in the coffee maker.

Local TV station KGUN was in court at the plea hearing.

That you intended to harm, um,

Robbie Johnson, uh, by adding,

um, or maybe laying poison or chemical compound to water the food or drink.

The United States is about to host a summit

with its longtime allies, Japan and the Philippines.

We find out what's in it for the Philippines and the Filipino people.

Special Assistant to U.S. President Joe Biden,

Dr. Mira Rapp Hooper,

laid out what to expect in the April 11th trilateral summit

between the U.S., Japan, and the Philippines.

In response to a question whether the U.S.-Philippine Mutual Defense Treaty

will cover an attack on the BRP Sierra Madre in the South China Sea,

Rapp Hooper says President Biden has made it clear

that there is a strong show of support and solidarity

among the three leaders when it comes to maintaining international law in the region.

The U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty

applies to the Philippines in the South China Sea,

again, to vessels underway, including Coast Guard vessels.

We stand strongly by our alliance commitments to the Philippines.

The trilateral summit will also discuss important issues

related to economic investments and infrastructure.

In sports of film,

gymnast is eyeing an Olympic berth

through a world competition in Doha, Qatar.

Fresh from three international competitions representing the Philippines,

17-year-old Los Angeles-born gymnast,

Levi Joan Ruivivar,

is hoping her performance on the bars

at next week's World Cup in Doha, Qatar

will get her a spot in the Olympics.

I'm currently positioned fourth,

and I'm about five points away from second.

And if I get into that second position,

then I will secure the spot and qualify to the Olympics.

And then if I don't get that spot in Doha,

there's also another opportunity,

for me to qualify during Asian Championships.

After training in the U.S. system her whole life

and signing with Stanford University,

the Filipina teen who started gymnastics at age two

joined the Philippine team last year.

Ruivivar, who is currently training in Texas,

will be heading for Doha later this week,

where she will practice leading to the bars competition

on April 17th and floor on April 18th.

The finals are set.

On Friday, April 19th.

We go to Texas, where three Filipina teens

are taking the volleyball courts by storm

as defense specialists, or liberos.

18-year-old Bea Angelis and 17-year-olds

Francesca Colocado and Daniela Lang

played liberos, or defensive specialists,

for the Absolute Volleyball Academy Texas 18 Adidas.

Out of 2,282 teams,

in the U.S., they are ranked 28th.

And out of 95 teams in the Texas Lone Star region,

they are ranked 5th.

It's a rarity for Filipinos to all play as defensive specialists

or liberos in one team,

especially one that is nationally ranked.

This January, they bagged the Lone Star

Classic National Qualifier 18 CWA Division

gold medal in Austin, Texas.

In March, they won the silver medal

at the Powerade Caribbean Volleyball Championship

18's Open Division in Puerto Rico.

My family, they've worked so hard.

Obviously, they were from the Philippines,

so bringing them here, I just want to be able to

work hard for them and give back to them.

You really cannot be successful on your own in this sport,

and that's something I really love about it.

It's because you form such a unique connection

with the people around you.

It's the culture that we have, the competitiveness,

the just love that we have for one another

and want the best for each other.

It's what wants me to come to the practice

every day in this building.

We begin in Irvine, California,

where the police are looking for a car

with a license plate that reads Bastos,

accusing the driver, now suspect of Bastos,

or lewd acts.

The Irvine Police Department has issued a wanted poster

for 58-year-old Robert De La Cruz of Dustin, California.

De La Cruz, a counselor and caretaker

at a day program for adults with disabilities,

is accused of sexually assaulting his patient

and coercing her into sex acts

from June 2022 until March of this year.

Police have executed a search warrant in his home

and found additional evidence.

However, they have been unable to find the substance,

and the suspect, police who believe De La Cruz

is Filipino, says that he is known to drive

a blue Toyota FJ Cruiser with a license plate

that reads Bastos II.

Those with information on his whereabouts

are asked to contact Detective Craig Vorce

Meanwhile, if you are saying,

San Francisco Bay Area resident

and you take public transportation,

you may qualify for a massive discount on fares.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission

and Bay Area Transit Agencies

have expanded the Clipper Start Pilot Program,

which provides transit fare discounts

for lower-income adults ages 19 to 64

to now include VTA buses and light rail trains

and to include a uniform 50% discounts

for rides on all trains,

and for all systems that take the Clipper

for fare payment.

There are no costs to apply

or be part of the Clipper Program.

After riders tap their Clipper Start Card,

they immediately receive 50% of the single ride fare

if they are eligible.

To qualify, you must be a resident

of the San Francisco Bay Area,

be 19 to 64 years old,

We begin with a historic event in Washington, D.C.,

the first joint summit between the United States,

the Philippines, and Japan

amid growing tensions with China

following repeated confrontations

between Chinese and Philippine vessels

in the disputed waterway in the South China Sea.

The United States' defense commitments to Japan

and to the Philippines are ironclad.

They're ironclad.

As I've said before,

any attack on Philippine aircraft, vessels, or armed forces

in the South China Sea

would invoke our mutual defense treaty.

We meet today as friends and partners

bound by a shared vision and pursuit

of a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

It is a partnership born not out of convenience

nor of expediency,

but as a natural progression of a deepening relation

and robust cooperation amongst our three countries.

At the trilateral summit,

the United States, Japan, and the Philippines

announced new joint naval exercises

and new economic cooperation measures.

Biden told Marcos Jr.

that Manila's partnership with Washington and Tokyo

would result in more jobs

and more investments for Filipinos.

Philippine American activists and their supporters

took to the streets in Washington, D.C.

to condemn what they call

an increased U.S. militarization in the Philippines.

This was part of a national day of action

led by Bayan USA in Portland,

Seattle, Honolulu, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Protesters believe this trilateral summit

will lead to more war and militarism

in the Asia-Pacific region

as tensions rise in the South China Sea

over disputed territories.

The U.S. government talks about bringing economic growth,

prosperity, clean energy,

and peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region,

but we know this is a guise for more war and militarism

in the Asia-Pacific,

and also an opportunity to perpetuate

unequal economic and military agreements.

The war and increasing tensions

between China and the United States

is bringing the Philippines closer and closer

to being on the crosshairs of war.

I will not allow you to leave!

And finally, in 2022,

award-winning filmmaker Ramona Diaz

documented the Philippine president's speech at the U.S. Embassy in Washington, D.C.

and focused on the Filipinos

who risked it all in their fight for democracy

and hope for a better Philippines.

And So It Begins premiered at Sundance in January

and will have its Los Angeles premiere in May.

And So It Begins continues a story

started by Diaz in 2020's

Peabody-winning documentary, A Thousand Cuts.

The film highlights the hope,

heartbreak, bravery, and challenges

faced by Filipinos during the 2022 presidential elections

between Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Lenny Robredo.

It was overwhelming to capture it,

and we captured a lot.

So even though we were in the U.S. Embassy in Washington, D.C.,

we were able to capture it.
