It was around 19 years ago when scuba diving instructor Carmela Sevilla found the perfect spot for a resort in the coastal town of Bauan. The town itself is synonymous with its beautiful reefs and diving in the Philippines. Although her resort drew in good business over the years, Sevilla also wanted to help preserve one of the main draws--its bountiful population of coral reefs. Bauan's diverse coral population has frequently suffered from natural calamities like typhoons and man-made obstructions like plastic waste and dynamite fishing--factors that could not only affect the local ecosystem, but also the tourism industry. Hoping to boost coral numbers in the face of these environmental threats, Sevilla devised a plan to begin planting coral nurseries for damaged coral across the coast. She enlisted the help of an expert and invited interested divers to learn about coral conservation and begin work on her pet project--making a coral nursery for damaged and detached pieces of coral. But Sevilla says the

The nurseries, when they're created, has different kinds of corals.
00:43.2
It has a selection of corals and it is closely monitored.
00:47.8
So it will actually help scientists see which corals are more resilient to climate change
00:55.7
and therefore they will be able to create recommendations to propagate those kinds of corals.
01:17.8
Thank you for watching!
01:47.8
For training, I'll turn you out so we have more.
01:50.5
So all these are really sandpaper.
01:54.0
So if I write, you should be able to write with your pen.
02:17.8
Thank you for watching!
02:47.8
So for now, what we're doing is we're attaching coral skeletons.
02:52.6
We're attaching the coral skeletons on this net.
02:56.2
It will serve as the base for the grafted corals, the corals that we want to propagate.
03:03.8
We won't talk about it until Alex and Arnel can bring it.
03:17.8
So let's get to the point and see why it's still not good enough.
03:21.9
So this is exactly how it started.
03:24.4
The process already consists of a hoop and a string and these two right-hand sides that tie the corals together
03:33.0
but once they salt cruel enough the corals are completely analyzing the territories toильно working together to help.
03:44.0
This is not.
03:44.9
There's no way to hot harsh it.
03:46.6
What?
03:47.0
No.
03:47.5
I think the goal is not
04:05.2
to make such a huge
04:07.6
difference
04:08.4
be able to
04:10.7
stop climate change or be able to
04:13.8
be able to
04:15.5
really create a huge
04:17.9
impact on conservation
04:19.3
everything
04:20.5
that creates an influence has always
04:23.5
started small
04:24.5
so I think that
04:27.7
that small
04:29.5
efforts are what will make a difference
04:31.7
because it builds up over time
04:33.5
it builds up slowly and it's
04:35.6
something that can last and it
04:37.6
helps create an impact on people
04:45.5
and helps estándar
04:48.1
is

I mean the intention of coral nursery is just to really help to propagate the corals.
05:26.3
So if we have those that are, if we select those that are actually more tolerant to climate change,
05:35.2
to higher temperature, that can survive higher temperature, then you can actually propagate more.
05:39.5
So next time you're actually kind of like building the reef of the future.
05:42.5
So you already have a good base if you want to do further coral transplantation efforts.
05:49.0
Yeah, so you know what I mean?
05:50.4
So it might, it will not directly help coral bleaching.
05:54.0
But because of what you have seen on the reef, so sometimes some corals,
05:57.9
when they bleach and then they recover, you know they can be a little stronger than their friends, right?
06:03.3
So you want to really propagate that stock.
