21:52.1
First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos opening up on her strained relationship
21:56.9
with Vice President Sara Duterte.
21:58.8
She spoke to broadcaster Anthony Taberna on his YouTube channel.
22:03.7
The First Lady said she was always kind to the Vice President,
22:07.1
but she admitted she was hurt when Vice President Duterte attended a Davao City rally
22:12.2
and laughed when her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte,
22:16.6
accused her husband of being a drug addict.
22:22.5
Kumusta kayo ni VP Sara?
22:24.8
I was always kind to her.
22:26.5
When Bong had that bagong lipunan,
22:28.8
she came, and my husband,
22:34.0
that was supposed to be December,
22:36.4
parang to start the new year,
22:37.8
o bagong Pilipinas,
22:39.1
parang huwag na tayo mag-away,
22:40.7
mabait tayo, let's help the people,
22:42.6
and na-postpone, ganyan.
22:45.2
So I think it was in Feb or March, right?
22:47.8
So she went there at 3,
22:50.3
and then she went to Davao.
22:53.9
And then when she went to Davao,
22:56.1
Duterte said,
22:57.3
o bangag, bangag.
22:58.8
Imagine a former president calling,
23:01.1
ano, bangag.
23:03.3
I mean, wow, you had six years,
23:05.6
why would you call, ano, bangag?
23:07.2
Diba?
23:08.0
For me, nasaktan ako,
23:09.2
because my husband will do everything to protect you.
23:12.4
You ran together, diba?
23:13.8
Sama-sama tayo, babagod muli.
23:15.9
Pupunta ka sa rally,
23:17.6
tatawag yung presidente mong bangag,
23:21.0
matatak, diba?
23:22.5
You're going to laugh.
23:23.8
Tama ba yan?
23:25.2
Even Lenny never did that.
23:28.8
There have been speculations of a rift between the two
23:32.0
after the First Lady seemingly ignored Vice President Duterte
23:35.2
during a send-off ceremony last month.
23:38.5
But President Marcos was always maintaining
23:41.2
that he has no issues with the Vice President.
23:45.9
The First Lady also hinted at possible tensions
23:48.7
with her sister-in-law, Senator Aimee Marcos.
23:51.7
In the same interview with Anthony Taberna,
23:53.7
the First Lady was asked about her relationship with the Senator,
23:56.5
who is not keen on defending her,
23:58.8
her brother, from the tirades of the Duterte clan.
24:02.1
This was her response.
24:05.6
Maybe you should ask.
24:07.0
I'm just the outlaw.
24:08.9
I know what line not to cross.
24:11.4
Pero nasa speaking terms ba kayo?
24:14.4
Well, every Sunday, we have a family lunch.
24:19.3
Once, my mother-in-law said,
24:21.3
Iha, hindi mo inibito si Aimee sa mga ano.
24:25.3
Ma'am, ako pa.
24:27.3
May group chat kami.
24:28.2
May lahat sila nandyan.
24:29.3
Sabi niya, anong group chat?
24:30.6
Ah, ma'am, hindi ko na pa.
24:32.7
No, no, but she's always invited.
24:34.7
Kailan pa kayo huling nag-ausap ng civil?
24:39.3
When did we? Christmas, I think.
24:43.3
The President and his sister have differed in positions
24:47.7
or differed in positions on several issues
24:49.7
and policy decisions in the past,
24:51.8
including their stand on the Maharlika Investment Fund
24:54.2
and Charter Change.
24:55.4
The Senator also remains an ally
24:57.9
of the Dutertes despite a deepening rift
25:00.7
between their families.
25:04.1
In other news, the Philippines' dollar reserves
25:06.8
climbed in March,
25:08.2
or numbers that matter for this Friday,
25:10.6
104 billion pesos.
25:13.3
The Philippine Central Bank says
25:14.8
the gross international reserves level
25:17.1
was higher from the 102 billion dollars in February.
25:21.2
This reflects the external liquidity buffer
25:24.6
of over seven months' worth of import of goods.
25:27.9
Payments of services as well as primary income.
25:31.4
It's also six times more than the country's
25:33.7
short-term external debt based on original maturity.
25:39.1
Let's close out the week in corporate stories.
25:42.2

26:08.7
viewed as Japan's leading framework for evaluating
26:12.2
the environmental performance of buildings.
26:18.6
Back here at home,
26:19.8
Megaworld nets half a billion pesos
26:21.9
from the sale of secondary shares
26:23.7
of its Real Estate Investment Trust.
26:25.9
The M-rate shares of...
26:27.9
over 40 million
26:29.3
were sold to an unnamed buyer
26:31.8
described by Megaworld
26:33.0
as a reputable long-term institutional investor.
26:36.6
The price tag was at 12.30 pesos apiece.
26:40.4
This represents 1.5% of MREIT's total outstanding shares.
26:46.3
Proceeds from the block sale
26:47.6
will be used to develop MREIT's development pipeline.
26:51.5
Now, finally, for stock market heavyweight BDO,
26:53.9
it is raising to 1 peso per share.
26:57.9
Its regular cash dividends on common shares
27:00.5
beginning this second quarter.
27:02.5
BDO, which reported higher earnings for Q1
27:05.5
just yesterday,
27:07.2
says this will be its new dividend policy moving forward.
27:11.2
It also announced that anticipated treasury shares
27:14.0
from SM Keppel's merger with BDO
27:16.4
would be classified as property dividends.
27:20.3
BDO is the surviving entity of that merger,
27:22.9
still subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals.
27:27.9
More corporate stories now.
27:30.9
Fresh from its Sugarhouse acquisition,
27:33.3
Frutas Holdings is ready to add more brands
27:35.8
in its 2024 mergers and acquisition pipeline.
27:39.4
It is looking at adding at least two more new brands this year.
27:43.3
Lester Hughes' firm signed a deal Thursday
27:45.5
to acquire the 40-year-old Sugarhouse bake shop
27:49.6
for a still undisclosed amount.
27:53.5
We are looking at a number of segments
27:57.9
both food and food-ingredient-related segments.
28:03.1
We are looking at potential targets.
28:06.0
We may also look at building them by ourselves.
28:09.5
So that's as much as I can disclose at this time.
28:12.3
At least another two.
28:13.8
I think that's a safe assumption for us.
28:21.2
The local boar is not spared from the bloodbath in Asia.
28:24.5
The PSEI ended today's trade at 64-43.
28:27.9
After shedding 1.2%.
28:30.4
Value turnover was at 5.4 billion pesos.
28:34.3
Taking a look at the Philippine peso now,
28:36.8
the local currency is still hovering at the 57 level
28:39.8
in intraday trading.
28:45.9
William Cabangon of AAA Equities is now here with us
28:49.7
on the Business Roadshow to discuss today's market movements.
28:52.1
Hi, Will. Welcome again to the show.
28:54.6
Hi, Stanley. Thank you for having me back on the show.
28:56.4
Pleasure to be here.
28:57.9
Pretty sobering developments that is affecting markets today.
29:01.6
The retaliation of Israel and Iran
29:03.2
signaling a possible escalation of the Middle East conflict.
29:07.1
Do you sense fear in the way the market traded today, Will?
29:11.4
Well, I think fear is an understatement.
29:13.3
What I sense right now is extreme fear.
29:16.1
Maybe even unjustifiably so.
29:19.7
Today, naturally, we saw strong selling.
29:23.6
But even more so given that it's a Friday.
29:26.4
Obviously, people are afraid.
29:27.9
They're afraid of the geopolitical conflict.
29:29.7
And they want to play it safe
29:30.9
in case things escalate over the weekend.
29:34.1
I think what the silver lining here is
29:37.0
is that, for one,
29:40.0
U.S. futures have already recovered.
29:41.9
They're basically back to where they were
29:43.2
before the missile strike.
29:45.2
And just as the program started,
29:48.0
I saw on Twitter, on X,
29:50.8
that Iran announced that they're not going to retaliate
29:54.5
to this Israeli attack.
29:55.7
That's good, right?
29:57.9
Hopefully, this has been resolved.
30:00.9
But yes, right now, there's extreme fear.
30:03.6
Yeah.
30:04.1
Okay, Will, now, really,
30:06.0
even without the escalating conflicts here,
30:08.1
already, we had our hands full
30:10.0
seeing price rises due to El Nino
30:13.3
in terms of food and even oil prices.
30:16.4
They have been tight in the past few weeks.
30:19.2
We've had increases.
30:20.8
Are there conditions that you're seeing
30:22.4
that this year's price spikes will not be as bad
30:26.1
as last year's inflation highs?
30:27.9
Of 7%?
30:29.1
Because, really, when you look at the trend,
30:32.1
at least for inflation,
30:33.5
we're really, really rising
30:35.6
in terms of that figure that we're trying to manage.
30:40.2
Well, my baseline scenario is that
30:42.3
we don't go anywhere near 7%
30:44.2
just because of base effects.
30:46.9
The only way that inflation goes back
30:49.6
to where it was last year
30:51.0
is if oil prices surge to, let's say, $150 a barrel
30:57.4
or something like that.
30:57.9
It would have to reach unprecedented highs
31:01.0
for us to really start feeling,
31:05.0
for us to start seeing the same inflation numbers
31:06.7
as last year.
31:07.7
But if what we see this year
31:09.8
is generally the same as last year,
31:12.2
inflation should still be pretty contained,
31:15.3
although not nearly where
31:17.7
central banks would like them to be.
31:20.7
All right.
31:21.4
Speaking of central banks,
31:22.5
now, start of the year,
31:23.8
Fed pointed to a possible cut in rates
31:26.9
by the SEC.
31:27.9
From the second quarter
31:28.4
to the second half.
31:30.1
Now, those timelines for rate-cutting
31:31.7
are not even realistic.
31:33.5
And even Fed Bank of New York,
31:35.7
President John Williams was saying,
31:37.8
while a hike is not in the baseline expectations,
31:41.2
it is a possibility.
31:43.2
Is it something also that you're considering as well
31:45.9
for the Banco Central
31:47.0
giving the fresh headwinds
31:48.9
that we're encountering right now?
31:51.4
I mean, let's just speak plainly here.
31:54.3
The BSP is not going to cut rates
31:56.1
with the PESA where it is now.
31:57.9
It's basically pushing 58 pesos.
32:01.3
I think the only way the BSP starts cutting rates
32:05.4
is if the Fed starts cutting rates.
32:07.6
So really,
32:08.5
what we should really be looking out for here
32:11.5
is what inflation looks like in the U.S.
32:13.6
and what the U.S. Fed will do
32:15.6
because we just have our hands tied right now.
32:19.4
Right now, the market is pricing in
32:21.9
one rate cut this year out of the U.S.
32:24.8
Okay.
32:25.1
And I think it's reasonable
32:27.8
to assume that that one rate cut
32:29.8
can still happen both there and here locally.
32:32.9
Okay.
32:33.2
Because, Will, here's what we're getting
32:35.1
as for rate cuts in the Philippines.
32:37.2
One, you have a possible postponement
32:39.3
of rate easing to the first quarter
32:42.4
even of next year
32:43.5
and not even in the fourth quarter
32:44.9
and that the sizes will not be as huge.
32:47.2
Now, just to bring down the key rates to 6%,
32:50.4
this was according to BSP Governor Eli Remolona,
32:54.6
we know rate cuts are the impetus
32:57.0
for the stockholders.
32:57.8
We know that the stock market
32:58.6
at least for the markets to win back those investors.
33:02.8
Now, are you now seeing flattish trends
33:04.8
at the PSE for the rest of the year
33:06.8
or are you still hopeful?
33:08.8
Well, Stanley, I've always said this
33:11.8
that the PSE is a stock picker's market.
33:15.8
It's true that the index has been
33:18.8
a pretty bad sign of what's been going on in the market.
33:24.8
But it's not reflective
33:26.8
of what's on the market.
33:27.8
It's still under the hood.
33:29.8
Yes, on the one hand,
33:30.8
you have property stocks falling off,
33:32.8
but banking stocks are basically all-time highs.
33:35.8
And that sort of divergence in fortunes
33:38.8
is not obvious when you look at the index
33:41.8
because naturally,
33:42.8
our index is weighted towards conglomerates.
33:44.8
It's weighted towards property stocks.
33:47.8
But if you look under the hood,
33:49.8
there are still some really strong winners in this market
33:53.8
that if people were to pay attention to,
33:55.8
you know,
33:56.8
there are still plenty of opportunities
33:58.8
to make money here.
33:59.8
All right.
34:00.8
Now, speaking of banks,
34:01.8
BDO reported yesterday
34:03.8
Q1 earnings at 18.5 billion pesos.
34:06.8
That's up year-on-year at 12%.
34:09.8
Now, this is within most expectations.
34:11.8
But is it still stellar?
34:13.8
I mean, what are your views on earnings for banks this year
34:16.8
given how they have benefited quite considerably
34:21.8
from high interest rates,
34:23.8
not seen to ease anytime soon?
34:25.8
But in terms of base effects,
34:27.8
are you still expecting banks' performance
34:29.8
to be that good as in the previous years?
34:32.8
I absolutely do.
34:34.8
I think banks are in a place where they cannot lose.
34:38.8
If rates stay where they are for longer,
34:42.8
meaning that the rates stay high,
34:44.8
then their margins, their profits will continue to soar.
34:48.8
But, you know,
34:49.8
in a world where rates come down,
34:52.8
suddenly, they all see treasury gains.
34:54.8
They're going to see large appreciations
34:56.8
in their treasury portfolios.
34:58.8
So, really,
34:59.8
they can have their cake and eat it.
35:01.8
I think banks are really one of the brightest spots,
35:05.8
not just in the Philippines,
35:06.8
but probably all over the world.
35:08.8
All right.
35:09.8
Now, many analysts we've spoken to on the show
35:11.8
tell investors that there are still plenty of opportunities
35:14.8
in the stock market,
35:15.8
as you've said so yourself a while ago.
35:17.8
Are these good levels now?
35:19.8
6,400 to re-enter the market
35:22.8
or must they wait?
35:23.8
I think it's a great time to enter selective stocks.
35:28.8
Again, this is a stock picker's market.
35:30.8
I have never been a fan of a shotgun approach
35:33.8
of having what I call an overly diversified portfolio.
35:38.8
There are winners in the stock market
35:40.8
and I think some of them are,
35:42.8
to put it bluntly,
35:44.8
incredibly obvious buys right now
35:47.8
and I think will pay handsomely in the near future.
35:51.8
Okay.
35:52.8
And those incredibly obvious stocks,
35:55.8
now, if you were to name at least three
35:57.8
that are priced currently at bargain levels
35:59.8
with an upside that's optimistic,
36:02.8
what are you seeing?
36:03.8
Sure, absolutely.
36:05.8
So, first off,
36:06.8
you know,
36:07.8
bargain is a very low hurdle.
36:09.8
I think nearly every stock in the Philippines right now
36:12.8
is a bargain
36:13.8
because all these corporations,
36:15.8
their profits are at all-time highs, right?
36:17.8
Even the most battered industries.
36:19.8
Some of these corporations are earning record amounts,
36:22.8
lots of money,
36:23.8
and their stock price was where it was 10 years ago.
36:26.8
So, a bargain is not enough.
36:28.8
So, my top three picks right now are,
36:31.8
well,
36:32.8
are in three different industries.
36:34.8
First is China Bank.
36:35.8
Obviously, we've spoken about how
36:38.8
good of a position banks are in right now,
36:41.8
but the reason why I like China Bank in particular
36:43.8
is because I have a pretty strong feeling
36:45.8
that come August,
36:46.8
if you have the, you know,
36:48.8
the four or five-month waiting holding period,
36:51.8
I think we start,
36:52.8
I think we see China Bank in the PSEI index by August.
36:57.8
Okay, okay.
36:58.8
Number two is a stock that I think would surprise people
37:02.8
given how far it's run up already,
37:04.8
but I still think it's a bargain.
37:06.8
And the second stock is Plus, Digi Plus.
37:09.8
Okay.
37:10.8
Binko Plus.
37:11.8
This is a company that I think people still think
37:15.8
is sort of a small cap stock,
37:17.8
and I think that's incorrect.
37:19.8
This company earned more money
37:21.8
in the fourth quarter of 2023
37:24.8
than Jollibee did.
37:25.8
Okay.
37:26.8
That's how much money this company is making,
37:28.8
and I think its market cap is nowhere near,
37:32.8
you know,
37:33.8
the sort of index level other companies are.
37:38.8
So I think there's still a lot of appreciation
37:40.8
left in the bank for this company.
37:42.8
Okay.
37:43.8
And I think,
37:44.8
and my third pick is from the most battered stock,
37:47.8
from the most battered industry of them all,
37:49.8
and that's property.
37:50.8
I'm not a fan of property stocks in general.
37:53.8
I think commercial real estate is in a bad place
37:56.8
and will continue to be so.
37:58.8
But what I like here is this small cap stock
38:00.8
called HDI House Stock.
38:02.8
They are a low-cost housing developer,
38:05.8
and this is a market that does not have a supply problem.
38:09.8
It's not affected really by, you know,
38:11.8
the exodus of Fogos.
38:12.8
It's not affected by, you know,
38:17.8
the same issues that commercial real estate is in.
38:19.8
And right now they're being priced
38:22.8
at such a cheap valuation
38:24.8
when in fact they have none of the problems
38:26.8
that the bigger boys have.
38:27.8
Yeah.
38:28.8
So, you know,
38:29.8
I think these are three stocks
38:30.8
that will do really well for the rest of the year.
38:33.8
Okay.
38:34.8
We'll see how they'll do in 2024.
38:36.8
Again, Will Caban,
38:37.8
President, AAA Securities,
38:38.8
thank you so much for joining us this afternoon,
38:40.8
as always.
38:41.8
Thank you very much.
38:42.8
All right.
38:43.8
Moving on,
38:44.8
we're stepping aside for a short break.
38:45.8
When we return,
38:46.8
an environment group will be back.
38:48.8
Thank you.
38:49.8
And if the government urges a probe
38:51.8
into the alleged illegal quarrying
38:53.8
in a protected area in Quezon Province,
38:55.8
stay where you are.
39:19.8
We'll be right back.
39:49.8
We'll be right back.
40:19.8
We'll be right back.
40:49.8
Mobility will be key to recovery.
41:17.8
Because we have realized
41:18.8
we have relaxed some of our quarantine methods,
41:22.8
and we have allowed more transportation to come out.
41:26.8
That's going to prove to be better for demand.
41:29.8
If we do follow the health protocols,
41:32.8
the ability of people to move around
41:34.8
will likely contribute better to growth.
41:48.8
Thanks for joining us,
41:51.8
and we will see you next time.
41:55.8
Bye-bye!
41:56.8
Bye-bye!
41:58.8
Bye-bye!
42:18.8
Thank you very much.
42:48.8
Thank you very much.
43:18.8
Jesus Crispin Remulia should know fully well that they should not use a news report as a basis for such allegations.
43:48.8
A Philippine Environment Group urges a probe on the alleged illegal quarrying in a protected area in Quezon Province.
44:09.5
The group Tanggol Kalikasan said Friday it was concerned over reports of such activities on the slopes of Mount Banahaw in Seriaya Town.
44:18.8
The group said aside from its environmental impact, some locals in the area have also complained of the quarrying.
44:25.8
It also said it would meet with local officials next week for their concern.
44:48.8
We need to investigate what is being done from the local government to the protected area superintendent and protected area management board.
44:59.7
And that is also how the provincial mining regulatory board issued the permit because they are responsible for that.
45:09.5
The Luzon and Visayas power grids again placed on alert status on Friday amid thin reserves.
45:15.5
The national grid operator said the Luzon grid will be on.
45:18.8
Red alert from 3 to 4 this afternoon and again from 6 to 10 p.m. due to unexpected surge in demand.
45:26.6
It said 19 power plants remain on forced outage while three are running on low power capacities.
45:32.8
As for the Visayas grid, it is on red alert from 1 p.m. until 8 to night and on yellow alert until 9 p.m.
45:40.2
The red warning means power supply cannot meet consumer demand.
45:44.3
The Luzon and Visayas power grids have been operating under alert.
45:47.9
This week.
45:49.3
As intense heat pushes power demand higher.
45:53.7
The Metro Manila Development Authority is set to launch an information drive about the ban on e-vehicles plying Metro Manila roads.
46:02.8
The ban implemented to reduce accidents involving e-bikes and e-trikes took effect Monday.
46:08.7
But President Marcos called for a one-month deferment of the crackdown on such vehicles to allow the public to become more familiar with the new rule.
46:16.7
In response, the MMDA said,
46:19.0
it will use the pause to educate the public.
46:21.5
Thank you.
46:24.3
We will temporarily announce this incident to let them know that our government is serious in regulating these kinds of vehicles for the first time.
46:39.4
And they will also be informed of the penalty if they are to be arrested.
46:46.5

Despite delays in the coming months with the looming red lightning alert season,
47:22.7
airlines and airport authorities are saying they are ready
47:26.2
and they are appealing for the public's understanding.
47:29.0
Jackie Pascual reports.
47:32.5
Airlines warn passengers of the coming red lightning alert season
47:36.1
which is expected to begin in May.
47:38.3
Budget carrier Cebu Pacific says last year,
47:41.5
there were four red lightning alerts or RLA in April.
47:45.1
But it jumped to 20 in May and 27 in June.
47:49.5
In total, over 1,000 flights of Cebu Pacific alone were disrupted by RLA in 2023.
47:56.4
The airline has now installed additional lightning shelters at Naia
48:01.1
for the safety of ground and ramp workers.
48:04.7
If a lightning strikes, whether it strikes close to that shelter,
48:08.5
whether it strikes actually on that shelter, they're protected.
48:11.5
But on the second hour, if you're at the boarding gates,
48:13.7
we provide meals.
48:15.1
We have spare provisions,
48:19.2
very generous spare provisions to ensure operational resilience
48:24.2
even for things that are beyond our control.
48:28.6
RLA could take a few minutes and even an hour or two
48:31.7
and this had an economic impact on the airline.
48:35.6
Cebu Pacific estimates they lose around 5 to 10 million pesos per month
48:40.0
because of lightning alerts which affect flights
48:43.2
as well as fuel and power.
48:45.1
Philippine Airlines says RLA is declared by the government
48:49.3
as a safety measure to prevent untoward incidents to passengers and personnel.
48:54.7
AirAsia Philippines appeals to passengers for patience during an RLA
48:59.0
as sometimes it can cause a one-hour delay.
49:02.5
For Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista,
49:04.6
the airport is ready in case more RLA's are issued.
49:08.7
We conform to all these procedures and policies for the safety,
49:15.1
not only of the aircraft, but the personnel that are handling flights.
49:21.3
Working closely to see to it na mabawasan yung inconvenience
49:25.7
kung sakaling magkaroon ng tinatawag na red lightning alert.
49:30.6
Bautista also guarantees na IA will not be underwater
49:33.7
in case a heavy downpour hits the area,
49:36.4
similar to what happened at Dubai International Airport.
49:40.0
Maganda naman yung ating drainage system dito.
49:42.4
Ang pagkakaiba sa Dubai,
49:45.1
ang Dubai kasi hindi umuulan eh, no?
49:47.7
So mukhang hindi naisama doon sa kanilang plano
49:52.0
yung paggawa o pagkakaroon ng magandang drainage system, no?
49:57.3
Bautista also asserts that na IA is ready for any power interruptions
50:01.0
if and when power supply dwindles amid the high heat index.
50:05.2
Last month, na IA suffered a power failure in one terminal
50:07.8
affecting the air conditioning system.

The greatest disruptor of all time is actually COVID-19.
53:47.7
Because of limited mobility, people are also not being able to go to physical branches, etc.
53:52.9
It further accelerated the adoption of consumers of digital channels.

55:14.8
In tech news, Meta introduces a jacked-up AI assistant
55:19.6
based on new versions of its open-source Liyama language model.
55:24.9
Meta co-founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said,
55:29.1
Meta AI is now the most intelligent AI assistant that is free to use.
55:33.9
Being open-source also means developers outside of Meta can customize Liyama 3
55:39.6
and that the company can later incorporate those improvements and insights.
55:43.8
Also, beginning next month, Meta will start labeling, made with AI,
55:49.1
any video, audio, or images when it detects or is told that the content is generated by the technology.
55:57.1
For now, the Liyama 3 is only based in English.
56:00.9
But Meta will soon release more models that can converse in multiple languages.
56:08.2
Now, a telco firm earlier this week has warned the public against clicking links
56:13.3
sent to them by the Liyama 3.
56:13.7
So, let's take a look at the Liyama 3.
56:13.8
The Liyama 3 is a mobile payment system that can be used to send text messages
56:15.0
amid the rise of so-called spoofing.
56:18.2
The scheme, according to Globe, is run by scammers posing as network companies
56:22.1
to access their credit card details and other sensitive information.
56:26.3
And here to discuss that is Ingrid Verona of Globe's mobile payments arm, Gcash.
56:31.6
Hi, Ingrid. Welcome to the Business Roadshow.
56:34.7
Hi. Good afternoon.
56:36.2
It's good to have you here.
56:37.7
Now, tell us first about spoofing in case some of our viewers want to have a clear understanding
56:43.5
of what you're talking about.
56:43.7
how that modus actually works sure um so spoofing is actually a type of cyber attack
56:51.4
in which an actor or a malicious actor disguises their identity or even fakes their identity
56:59.2
to get information from a customer or to to deceive a customer so usually there's you know
57:08.0
then the most common ones would be your email spoofing you have website spoofing and then as
57:14.6
mentioned earlier you have your message spoofing okay uh you know i want to get a clear picture
57:21.2
of just how pervasive this is because based on my own experience i've been receiving quite a
57:25.7
lot lately these are text messages with links that they ask you to click now uh what's the
57:32.7
situation there what happens when you do that okay so what really happens is
57:38.0
that you get ported into whether a website or another platform which actually asks you for more
57:46.5
information usually it's your personal identifiable information um at times when you
57:52.7
click on these links it also ports you into another platform where automatically they can
57:58.8
actually get or penetrate your information or your device information okay just how pervasive
58:04.8
is it right now based on your experience at g cash
58:08.0
how big a problem is it you get a lot of reports lately every day
58:13.7
uh to be very honest there was a time in g cash where you know it's actually our number one
58:21.6
fraud problem or staff problem as we call it but because of the recent security tools and
58:28.4
the recent improvements uh insecurity of g cash we are not seeing it as a top um fraud or scam
58:38.0
okay it's true now so it has diminished sins okay when you talk about the likely victims of
58:45.5
spoofing uh what kinds of users are these i mean are because i mean i would understand if the
58:52.0
younger generations more savvy uh is it specifically targeting the older ones
58:58.9
oh yes there are vulnerable groups that are being targeted and yes your older ones are being targeted
59:08.0
there are still you know younger generations that are being targeted there's actually i don't
59:11.9
think they are choosing any specific cohort now but it is indeed true that usually it's your
59:19.3
more older generation that gets compromised or that gets victimized okay jumping off from what
59:25.6
you mentioned earlier about you know letting people know what this does how this modus works
59:31.0
so they can avoid uh falling victim to scams what are the programs now as far as information
59:38.0
and education are concerned that you are spreading across your markets yep so we do have what
59:45.2
we call a gsafe file campaign it's where we educate our users all of our users on how they can
59:52.0
actually safeguard their information safeguard their assets safeguard their money in gcash and
59:58.5
we are you know going places and using different platforms so that we can ensure that our message
60:05.9
is spread throughout our users
60:08.0
um it is very important to always always check um the transactions that you're doing making sure
60:15.7
that you are only talking to legitimate sellers making sure that you are indeed talking to you
60:21.8
you know a friend or a relative indeed um and you're you know it's not a bogus person with a
60:27.5
bogus identity that is on the other side of the phone um it's also very important that you only
60:35.5
transact with legitimate
60:38.0
sellers uh with legitimate stores and somehow when you go to gcash and when you transact there
60:46.2
uh we we i don't think we have failed in reminding our consumers to always ensure that the number
60:53.6
that they are sending to is a number that they have verified for themselves but apart from that
60:59.5
of course we do have our security tools in place to ensure that while our customers are safeguarding
61:05.3
on their end and we also offer safeguarding
61:08.0
them in our platform okay now ingrid uh telcos can't stress it enough uh these days they've
61:14.0
always said that you know they are not anymore sending they might be sending promo messages
61:18.4
but these messages do not anymore contain links uh which are uh well dubious uh in a lot of spoof
61:26.6
cases spoofing cases now is there any similar campaign on the part of you know fintech companies
61:33.0
like gcash to you know communicate to their clients
61:38.0
and to the accounts that you know uh these practices have been discontinued yeah do you also send links
61:46.0
uh so in gcash we don't have links we do not use links um if there's any communication coming from
61:53.7
gcash informing you to click a link uh via sms or via any social media platform that's not gcash
62:01.0
