TDC Reader Version 2

Hello all!

I've been working on Version 2 of the TDC Reader for a while now.
It's to the point where I think I can start to open it up and let people give it a try and give feedback. It's still very new, so there may still be bugs.
If you're interested in doing some beta testing, please give it a try and let me know your thoughts. This is the URL you should use to access v2:
www.tagalog.com/read er/

MAIN CHANGES:
- Generally a simpler Reader design, so you can focus on reading.
- The Reader is now fully separated out from the Tagalog.com main site, to make use and navigation easier. You can now get to the reader from: "TagalogReader.com".
- More intuitive page flipping interface. No more having documents broken into a bunch of pieces when they are long documents. No more scrolling to get to the bottom of every page and having to click the "Mark Read" button.
- No more "Mark Word Known" functionality: Most people weren't using this, or are not marking all their known words, or simply give up doing it at some point. If no one is using it, in unnecessarily complicates the system and feels like a bit of a barrier for new users.
- NEW: Pages are automatically marked as "Read" (for stats/tracking purposes) after you've been on the page a while. "Read" text will flash green to indicate that it's been logged. You can also manually override this with one click by clicking the "Book" icon.
- A little fun: Easily import posts from a variety of Filipino subreddits on Reddit.

GENERAL QUALITY OF LIFE IMPROVEMENTS:
- New daily stats graph.
- Better import ability (MS Word, PDF).
- Simpler and faster "Paste" text interface.
- Better night mode support.
- Font size settings.
- Easier way to share documents between members.

IN BETA:

* These are not fully functional yet, or are still buggy.
- Simple, true anki-style SRS flash card system built into the Reader for words marked as "Studying". A full SRS solution for those who don't want to mess with Anki.
- A fast and easy way to add sentences to above SRS system from Reader text, for easy sentence mining.

@akosikoneho
Can you email me a file to test with? I’m not sure my converter service will do epub to text…they say they can do epub to image, but that’s all…but maybe it’s just not documented….

@akosikoneho
UPDATE: Sadly, my converter service doesn't support EPUB to TXT...

@jkos Late response but I see you handled it! Hate to hear that, but no worries. It's only one extra click for me to convert epub to txt locally. For other readers you can do this with "calibre" a free and open source software.

A) I played a bit using a PDF file of "Tagalog for Beginners" (Ramos):
1) I cut and pasted a bit of text that included accents. The reader's dictionary lookup did not find the exact match of most of the words with accents, e.g., Kumáin, mabúti, ginawá (i.e., no audio played as a clue, or no reasonable results). The main TDC dictionary doesn't seem to have had any issue with the individual word(s).
2) I attempted to import the PDF file but was inhibited by a size limit of 2MB (file is 3.8MB). Is this a long term limitation and will I need to split PDFs? I am not sure what the practical size is in the new reader, anyway.
B) I tried Balarilang Tagalog
1) I cut and pasted "Kailán namán inilálagáy". The reader's dictionary did not find exact matches for any (i.e., no audio played as a clue, or no reasonable results). TDC dictionary found them. I manually edited the accented letters to non-accented and they were found.
2) I tried importing the 1.2 MB file but there was an error converting to text format.
C) I cut and pasted "inilálagáy" from the TDC dictionary entry but the reader dictionary lookup did not find it.
Maybe it's me...

@repolyo

1.) Good catch with the accents I mostly read unaccented text, so I didn't run into it this is important. I should have this fixed now.

2.) I upped the size 5MB. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to limit it because the conversion service costs money, and converting a bunch of 100MB PDF files would start to get expensive...

3.) You mentioned: "I tried importing the 1.2 MB file but there was an error converting to text format." -- the importing service is pretty much out of my control, unless there is a bug on my end (which there could be). Could you email me the file so I can test? What is the file type? jkosmin -=@-= gmail . (punto) com.

I'm trying out my first text. This is amazing, thank you so much!

The "document info" feature seems like it will be quite useful.
