Question: What's the difference between "itanong" and "tanungin"

As far as I can tell they're both object-focus words meaning "ask".

"Itanong mo sa kanya"
"Tanungin mo sa kanya"

Niether one sounds wrong. Is there a difference?

I've also always understood them both being the same.

I'm not sure on the technicalities in regards to these words but the only thing I can say is that in my experience, depending which word was used the proceeding words change?

tanungin = I associate it with asking someone (asking someone a question)
itanong = I associate it with asking a question in general (asking a question)

I could be wrong but that's how I've differentiated the two. Then again you could use them interchangeably haha

Ex:
tinanong ko siya
itatanong ko sa kanya
tatanungin ko siya
itanong mo kay ...
tanungin mo sa amin

itanong - focus on the question
tanungin - focus on who are you asking

@akosikoneho There you go, the simple version haha. That makes sense, that's how my brain in Tagalog has always understood it.

@borr It should be:
" Tanungin mo si (name)
Tanungin mo siya/sila/sina (names)
Tanungin natin si (name) /sya/sila/sina (names)

@borr Opo, mali ang po ang "tanungin mo sa amin". Dapat ay "itanong mo sa amin" (tanungin mo kami).

What did you ask him?
I asked him if you were here.
Itinanong ko sa kanya kung narito ka. (object focus - focus on the the thing that's being asked)

Who did you ask if I was here?
I asked him if you were here.
Tinanong ko siya kung narito ka. (locative focus - focus on the person who's being asked the question)
