"Putol" is the general term for cutting something. When we use "putol" ("magputol" or "putulin") we mean to cut something by whichever way is appropriate, including "with bare hands". For example, if we know that Peter cut the grass by using shears, we would tend to say "naggupít ng damó", but in case we are not sure about what he used to do it, we would more likely say "nagputol ng damó".
