Question: Hello, I am trying to learn Tagalog grammar. I have learnt about the aspect of Tagalog verbs, (completed, uncompleted, contemplated) ... but once in a while I have read about another tense, I think it was called "near past" ... and it was formed by prefixing the verb with "ka" ... I cannot find the place again where I read about this ... can anyone give me a clue about the correct terminology and grammar ... and if it is important or not ...

@Jimmy329 I realize this is an old post, but fyi, the recent-perfective aspect is covered quite well in Tagalog Reference Grammar, Schachter Otanes, page 371-375.

Why is the Tagalog so complicated and not simple like Spanish.
I do not understand the addition of pa-ka-ma etc and first consonant and vowel which complicates.
Why is there no simple conjugation of the verb ?
Were the originators of Tagalog influenced by other languages ?
Its as if they were making it difficult for foreigners to understand their language - Tagalog.

Schachter & Otanes covers a lot of things pretty well…but it’s super dense for most readers…

Why am I not a millionaire super model with the intellect of Einstein? ; )
It is what it is. Tagalog is difficult for English learners, but not as difficult as other languages (Japanese and Arabic, for example, are considered more difficult, effectivelanguagelea rning.com/language-g uide/language-diffic ulty/ ).

I leave it to the linguists, but I assume the language evolved naturally over time to become what it is now, and that evolution didn’t care much about how difficult it is/isn’t for foreigners to learn.

Just a thought for people trying to learn English tenses.
To start with we have three simple tenses; past , present and future. I loved, I love and I shall love.
Each of these three also has a continuous form; I was loving, I am loving and I shall be loving.
Each of these six has a perfect form: I had loved, I have loved, I shall have loved, I had been loving, I have been loving and I shall have been loving.
So that makes 12 tenses.
To make matters worse all 12 of these have a passive form as well as the active form eg I shall have been being loved (future perfect continous passive).
So that is 24 different verb forms that people have to learn in English.
Plus of course we have irregular verbs; I was, I am, I shall be.
And so it goes on... When you look at that lot, maybe Tagalog isn't so complicated after all

> Tagalog grammar is such a huge mess, though not as bad as English. Whenever I ask natives to explain the grammatical rule that a sentence implies ("Why is it this instead of that"), they get a bit confused and just kinda say that's that. The grammar guide by Learning Tagalog is the resource, in my opinion.

I no longer hold this opinion. I found a multilingual native Tagalog speaker who explained to me grammar patterns that didn't make sense to me. People just don't understand linguistics well enough to explain a grammar rule. Plus grammatical patterns in casual situations by those who aren't 100% fluent in a language (e.g. they use a few English words in Tagalog conversations) can be incorrect.
