@stevesmi I feel you! it can be really tough and overwhelming. I will let you know whenever you can join us. Meanwhile, I suggest you start with small steps. Some may suggest you to start with a grammar book and to study hard. It's one way, but this method never worked for me. Why? because I am a bubbly person who gets lonely learning alone with a book, because also my greatest motivation in learning Tagalog or (Bisaya before) has always been to bound with people, to have deep human interactions. My unconventional learning strategy did not prevent me to learn languages, although I may not speak them perfectly. It's ok for me because my goal is not to become a politician or a lawyer
but to be able to create a relationship with the natives, to be really one with them and their culture, to hear what they have to say, and to understand what they want to share with me, to be able to tell them also what matters to me. So I immerse myself with Tagalog, take any single opportunity to interact with people as a way to reach that goal. Street kids and poor families along Manila streets have become my friends and my informal teachers, and the more I interact with people, the more I am eager to improve also. So nah, I did not study much on my own. Well, I took a few lessons in the past, tried to bring around a tiny journal to take notes, but it was not much and yet I grabbed the local accent, expressions, and commons words.
It's only when I have reached a certain level in my current target language that I enter deeper into the grammar, usually, when I think my level needs an upgrade 😊 Then, and only then, I have the feel of the language, and things suddenly make sense for me. So now, since I feel my current level is frozen into an average Tagalog, I got myself 2 native language partners ( you can "get" yours here:
www.conversationexch ange.com) and I book for Tagalog classes with an awesome teacher (if interested only: italki.com/teacher/7539764) and I created that tiny group to motivate me to do some self-study.
That's my intuitive learning approach. Some may not agree with me. It's ok. I won't even tell you it will work for you because every person is unique. Find what works for you. Focus on your reachable goal, on what it's important for you to know right now. And you will learn! It may help you also to read this and to watch that:
