@XandraV
Hello. I am considered an advance in speaking Tagalog but in case you have questions or need confirmations about how you speak or write the language, you could count me in.

@hamilee Oh really? that's so awesome and sweet from you! if you don't mind me adding you in our group chat on hangout (Gmail) we would definitively value your presence, insights and help. I decided on my own to take again some tagalog classes and i will have my "first" this Tuesday but having you in our boat would be really wonderful. You can email me to xandra.von@mail.com then I will add you in the group

Teaming up is good idea. Having a study buddy, will help you achieve your goal. You can have an arrangement if what to study, what to learn and what possible exercises to do. But it is much better if someone of your study buddies is good or advance or in intermediate level of the language target. Someone can check and evaluate the outputs of everyone. I am a natural born Filipino, willing to help you guys. It is good to know that there are people like you who are willing to learn our language.

@stevesmi I feel you! it can be really tough and overwhelming. I will let you know whenever you can join us. Meanwhile, I suggest you start with small steps. Some may suggest you to start with a grammar book and to study hard. It's one way, but this method never worked for me. Why? because I am a bubbly person who gets lonely learning alone with a book, because also my greatest motivation in learning Tagalog or (Bisaya before) has always been to bound with people, to have deep human interactions. My unconventional learning strategy did not prevent me to learn languages, although I may not speak them perfectly. It's ok for me because my goal is not to become a politician or a lawyer but to be able to create a relationship with the natives, to be really one with them and their culture, to hear what they have to say, and to understand what they want to share with me, to be able to tell them also what matters to me. So I immerse myself with Tagalog, take any single opportunity to interact with people as a way to reach that goal. Street kids and poor families along Manila streets have become my friends and my informal teachers, and the more I interact with people, the more I am eager to improve also. So nah, I did not study much on my own. Well, I took a few lessons in the past, tried to bring around a tiny journal to take notes, but it was not much and yet I grabbed the local accent, expressions, and commons words.
It's only when I have reached a certain level in my current target language that I enter deeper into the grammar, usually, when I think my level needs an upgrade 😊 Then, and only then, I have the feel of the language, and things suddenly make sense for me. So now, since I feel my current level is frozen into an average Tagalog, I got myself 2 native language partners ( you can "get" yours here: www.conversationexch ange.com) and I book for Tagalog classes with an awesome teacher (if interested only: italki.com/teacher/7539764) and I created that tiny group to motivate me to do some self-study.
That's my intuitive learning approach. Some may not agree with me. It's ok. I won't even tell you it will work for you because every person is unique. Find what works for you. Focus on your reachable goal, on what it's important for you to know right now. And you will learn! It may help you also to read this and to watch that: medium.com/@fluentup /what-we-need-to-kno w-about-the-80-20-ru le-in-language- www.youtube.com/watc h?v=d0yGdNEWdn0&feat ure=youtu.be Good luck in your quest!

Just be aware guys there are a few active chat groups other than this mysterious one. Feel free to DM the admin Jkos, user AMBoy, or myself if you feel the need to join a chat that isn't closed.

True...there are places on the internet where you can chat in Tagalog and ABOUT Tagalog with true blue linguists even and they are open to the public. More than enough to satisfy a learner, you would be amazed in fact.

@akosikoneho/ @AMBoy ano po? our group is everything but mysterious. And I do appreciate a lot this open site. The people are friendly and the resources /tools are awesome. I just know I cannot persevere learning alone. So I set up a tiny group on hangout, and I choose to have it small like that we all commit more (the bigger the harder to keep up, because it becomes less "personal") So when I said : "For information: As for now, we do not take new members in our learning group. Ingat po ninyong lahat!" it was not to be pretentious or mean with anyone. I did not mean also to leave Tagalog.com site. So my apologizes if I sound clumsy or rude. 😔
regarding our so called-mysterious group 😉, we check on another to make sure we persevere, we keep up with vocabulary, grammar study, reading, and more. Having some mates who study together with me motivates me and it motivates them. We don't teach one another, we support another, which is different I think. I do have a real teacher, and I do seek for real answers. I already have a list of grammatical questions I want to ask you guys 😊, but I did not find the time to post them yet. That's all, nothing more. So please, have no worries or bad feeling, because I am not trying to compete with any legit sites and above all not with this one. I know you are all responsive and helpful! and I thank the admin Jkos, AMBoy and akosikoneho and all other members for that. So once again, I feel sorry to know that you felt bad about it. That's was really not my intention. I may not be what you call a "true blue linguistic". I don't know. I don't know how you would call me. I am currently trying hard to master Tagalog, but having ADHD, anxiety, OCD issues among other learning and motivation difficulties, learning the regular way is really tough for me. Is it bad then if I try to set up on my side the learning strategies which work for me and for people with some similar issues? After all, we seek the same thing I bet, to be able to learn and speak Tagalog the best way we can. Let me know if and how you want me to reformulate my last message to be more appropriate, and I will! 👍🏻 Warm regards and much love! 😘

@XandraV

To be honest, I'm just glad people are willing to go to the lengths of creating a group to learn a language like Tagalog. So thank you for putting in the effort to do this!

I think people on this forum are just trying to be helpful, even if the internet can sometimes make it not seem that way; that's all.

What I meant by true blue linguist is that there are places you can go and chat with people in Tagalog and be supervised and ask direct questions to Filipinos who are actually linguists by education and trade. That's all . Not the other definition of linguist, did not meant to offend lol.

@AMBoy It's all good then. 😊 That's the problem with messages vs. alive talks, it can lead to misunderstandings. I will surely come here to ask my questions if things do not make sense for me! I am working on the verbs formation, aspect, focus. It's bit tough but I find very interesting as well!
Maraming salamat po kuya!
